TV Died, Are These The Best Options for Buying One Now?

Old faithful plasma of 11 years just died and its time for an upgrade. Budget is $1400 (or maybe a few more $). 65" is the size for our size room.

It will mostly be for:
* Watching streamed services (netflix, Amazon)
* Watching local plex 4k movies
* Playing Xbox One S (Currently sinking a lot of hours into Assassins Creed Valhalla)

What would be the pick of these or can you recommend a better one?

Samsung Q60T - $1435 @ JB Hifi

  • Wasn't the old Panasonic st50? Mine won't die.

My 11 year old VT42 died ~3 months ago, and my 10 year old GT46 is showing signs of imminent death (purple banding on white screen). Feels like 10 years is about the lifespan no matter what the quality.
      :(

10 years is pretty damn good. I feel like we were upgrading TVs much more frequently when I was younger. We have a 60" LG TV that is used daily and it's almost 10 years old. We have a second TV that is only 42" (Panasonic) and it is almost 13 years old but isn't used daily. I don't know if Panasonic still make TVs but I would definitely recommend an LG.

?? My parents CRT was 25 years old when it was upgraded and was still working perfectly fine, but didn't accept a VCR input (not even through RF).
All CRT's easily lasted 10 years, even the cheapo ones.

My Panasonic plasma TH-46P is now 13 years old and still going strong.

My 26 inch Sony - 22 years old still working ok I put it on the road side collections 3 yrs ago due to no longer able to receive digital signal.

Another 46 inch Sony - 10yrs with Motionflow feature is still going ok.

  • It was a LG and picture quality was still fanstastic and it operated well. Just suddenly made a very louch cracking noise and now will will not turn on.

Have you had anyone look at repairing it? I got given a Samsung plasma that died under similar sounding circumstances and it was just a fuse that had popped. It cost less than $2 for me to repair it.

I think Samsung, Sony, LG are all good - possibly others.

I thought Sony had the better LED TV's
    LG for their OLED

Surprised you didn't push for warranty!
Have definitely seen a few forum posts seeing if they should contact the ACCC for something equivalent to this. /s

Good on you though. It's going to be a big upgrade.

I think going from plasma to lcd is a downgrade. Blacks won't be as good, blooming and dse will be noticeable to a plasma viewer.

      • I have a feeling a 10 year old plasma will come no where near to a mid range LED in terms of picture quality. 4k alone will make a huge difference.

Yes the blacks won't be pitch black, but having increased maximum brightness and contrast will blow the plasma out of the water.

As well as the cost savings, unfortunately the OP will have to find an alternative heater source for winter.

I love my Panasonic plasma compared to my stupid Hisense 4k led. Crap blacks, ghosting, patching lighting. Will be like losing a family member if that Panasonic every dies. Will probably try fix it.

          • @brendanm: Well…. something something… hisense… something..

            • @lunchbox99: Yeah that's fair, however I have the same feelings about everything in the shop bar oled. I got memed into the Hisense by this place and others, who said they were great. Everytime I turn it on and it doesn't turn on the AV receiver I want to smash it.

          • @brendanm: Are hisense that bad as I see a lot of negative comments? Limited to a particular line or across all their TV's?

            • @Clivey In Space: Not sure, but I sure wouldn't buy another. It's like all the Chinese stuff really, could be good, but they never actually do a proper job, and it's all the little things you end up hating. Same as my Xiaomi robovac. The vac itself works better than the lg roboking it replaced, but the software is buggy, and it just isn't polished.

    • Surprised you didn't push for warranty!

  • Ebay has a sale today?

    • Thanks! Did not know. The Hisense 65Q8 with the discount comes to $1525. This is another option to now consider.

  • Id look for a TV with Hdmi 2.1 support, for support of enhanced audio and newest consoles do your research though as its had a shakey rollout
