The normal Brita Marella is $23.10 at Coles, and $34.30 for the XL starter pack (this).
Check the number of filters included.
If I am not mistaken, this one comes with 4 (including the 3 bonus filters)
Are these things actually needed especially in metro areas where tap water is drinkable & touted as some of the best?
No, these aren't needed. Tap water is fine
Better not to drink tap water if you live in a old house. The underground water pipes may look like this.
Makes sense in Adelaide, tap water taste differs from okay to terrible.

Brita filters are Made In China, for those that are interested. Used to be made in Germany.
