Going from Ecopia H/L 001 215/65R16 98H to Dueler A/T 697 215/65R16 106S What to Consider?

Hi,

Need to replace the tyres on my car and I like the looks of Dueler A/T 697 215/65R16 106S. Talked to a tyre shop and was told that these are "aggressive" tyres. All of my driving is in the city. Do the Duelers hold well for city driving?

Appreciate some input.

You don't need A/T tyres if all your driving is in the city. Don't pick tyres based on what they look like.

Why not, if you want a cooler looking tyre
697s perform fine on the street, obviously it will be a compromise but some people want a cooler looking car
If you solely want practicality, then yeah I absolutely agree with you, but if style is one of the factors I think thats fine.

    • Have never used A/T tyres before and that's why wanted to know if there are any advantages/drawbacks of using them.

They'll be less smooth on roads, little or a lot noisier and may use more fuel on average. Shouldn't matter on a rugged offroad vehicle but not ideal for your average SUV. On the flipside, do tend to last longer and gives you ability to go on offroad/unsealed tracks if you ever wanted to.

Different tyres have different ratings for grip, speed, wet weather etc. You need to look at those specs for your use case.

        • Agreed, I had a pair on my car back in the day and they were a lot noisier. Mine were designed to be ok in snow though, they looked liked a 4wd tyre. To provide some context, I was 21, low on cash, and they were the cheapest tyre I could find second hand that wasn't a retread. If you aren't in this position, just get a decent set of Korean tyres

    Could be noisier
    Could affect fuel economy

For what benefit? Looking like you go off-road, when you don't actually go off-road? What next, nice big bull bar, roof racks, chunky mud flaps?

Give OP a break. He might need to escape into the bush when he gets chased him with a pitchfork! 😁

(Sorry OP.. I just couldn't let that one go!)

All good now. Threat has been eliminated.

Haha, that tyre shop mustn’t deal with many real 4x4s if they think 697s are aggressive, or they read you as a city boy the second they saw you.

That’s a pretty small tyre, are you putting them on a subaru or other small suv?

A/T tyres can be louder, they can provide less wet weather traction, they can decrease fuel economy, they can be heavier. Dry weather bitumen traction shouldn’t be substantially different to a road tyre.
The benefits are that the A/T should have a slightly better puncture resistance, they should handle a bit better on dirt and gravel than a road tyre, they will be a bit better in the mud than a road tyre but not as good as a M/T.

That's right. Putting them on a small SUV.

they can provide less wet weather traction

If that's the case I will probably go with ecopia once again.

      Thanks for the explanation.

  • Just no.

AT tyres are to give extra grip in off road conditions. They are not suited for city only driving. As other have said, the wet weather performance will be worse, they’ll be noisier and cost you more in fuel.

They are also designed with heavier sidewalls and tread for puncture protection will be heavier which reduces fuel efficiency.

If you are going on looks alone it depends on what kind of SUV you have. AT tyres look just ridiculous on a CX 3/5/7/9 Kluger or any other obviously soft road kind of vehicle.

If for practicality reduce Noise or better grip on sealed roads then going ecopia is a no brainer between the 2

What type of SUV is it?

What are you trying to achieve?

Ecopia is a long lasting but low grip touring tyre. Is that what you want?

If you just want a nice road tyre then consider Michelin Primacy 4 or Continental Comfort Contact 6.

    • What type of SUV is it?

      Dualis.

What are you trying to achieve?

Nothing too fancy. Just had to change tyres and the A/T tyres caught my eye. Thought they would look alright. But I always drive on paved roads, so will look at other options.

      consider Michelin Primacy 4

How do they compare to Bridgestone ecopia?

      • They will have better grip and probably last a bit longer. A better all round tyre. I really don't like eco-tyres

  • What a coincidence.

My old Mazda CX9 1994 used to be given Dueller HL and the new one comes with…. Ecopia!!!

I thought Ecopia is the bottom of the range. I asked them why giving a top of a range car with cheap tyres?

    They can't answer.

  • Had a bloke who previously had d697 in his rav 4 cos he wanted longer lasting tyres. Needless to say he wanted a refund after a couple thousand kms.
Good luck with that venture, if the noise doesn't want to kill you the handling might.
If you really want some AT at least try out the ones that don't have a LT construct so something like michelin LTX force, you can tell mainly by the load rating so it'll be closer to the 98 if they make it in that size.
