  • Great

  • is the Huawei Matebook X Pro 2018 with or without mx150?

    • +3

      yes, mx150

  • why would you buy this instead of a Macbook Air with M1?

    • +11

      Native windows?

    • +2

Actually was going to ask the same thing, and I have no Apple products. Seems insane to spend $2k on a Huawei.

      • +1

besides windows this is better than a macbook! thought the M1 processor is better?

        • from reviews this is BETTER than a macbook, screen wise and everything else. It's the best windows laptop. besides for gaming

          • +4

            @ilove: That's a big call, and I don't believe it.

            • @Singu1arity: that's what the youtube reviews convince me. besides the m1 it's better in every way

          • -3

@ilove: Owned a Matebook X Pro for 12 months, purchased a Macbook Air M1 on release to try out and ended up listing the matebook X pro for sale the next day.

            • @Jebus: Whoa, why? is the macbook air screen small? i had the intel one 2020 version and it's small af

              • +7

@ilove: The Matebook X Pro is a good laptop, but the M1 is on a whole other level.

The Matebook X Pro has one major flaw in every model due to its form factor… heat. There are plenty of hardware and software hacks online to try and reduce the load and undervault or replace thermal paste/pads, but it really doesn't work that well. It can get stupidly hot even browsing the internet, and don't even think about playing a game unless you love the sound of fans spinning to death.

After you use an M1 and experience just how stupidly responsive it is, it doesn't even get lukewarm under load and has insane battery life…. like I said, on another level.

The Matebook screen is 13.9" and the Macbook Air is 13.3". If you weren't happy with the Macbook Air screen then you won't be happy with the Matebook X Pro screen.

                • +1

                  @Jebus: This is correct.

The M1 Macbook Air is my first Apple product ever. I'm not an Apple fanboy (people were shocked to hear I bought the MacBook Air) - but the magic pixie dust Apple used to create the M1 chipset is ridiculous. It's so fast, so cool, so efficient. None of it makes sense.

I can go 2 days between charges if I use all native coded apps.

    • +5

According to Dave2D, that's a fair question to ask. Apparently the M1 MacBooks are so good at the moment that if you're not particularly tied to Windows, then a Mac is the best laptop for the money. Video: https://youtu.be/ztTY788z9NE

      • yeah i watch that too. and it cheap but 13.3 to me is a bit small

        • Yeah it's 16:10 screen ratio thank goodness which makes it easier to deal with, but I plug in an external 27inch monitor at my desk anyways.

      • Mac airs have been king for a long time as far as macs go. I want an air but with native windows and the same insane efficiency. Hoping for that day.

To show your support for Winnie the Pooh.

      • +1

        watwatwat??:)

        • Winnie the Pooh is a reference to Xi Xinping. So to support him and thus China, you buy this Huawei product over Apple.

I have the 2018 MateBook X. It is great, but I don't recommend it and I just bought an M1 MB Air to replace it.

      Some major things to consider.
You can google these to DYOR
These run hot. Intel's fault. Undervolting mine just ended up with BSOD even at low levels.
Performance is pretty poor for the 2018 model these days.
Screen is great, but the touch screen is not needed. There is no stylus or pen input and it doesn't flip 180degrees to be used as tablet.

Battery life is terrible. There could be some tuning I could do, but on high brightness, web browsing, I won't get 3 hours.

Fingerprint sensor doen't always work, but that's ok.

Sleeping the laptop, closing the lid, will still run down the battery completely in 2 days or less.

I love lots of RAM. However, 2 days ago I bought a MB Air with 8GB of RAM as a replacement for this Matebook X.

It runs cool, no noisy fans, RAM handles everything, it's way faster, and battery life is 5x.

Would I buy this Huawei? No.
I have 2x Huawei phones, earbuds, and a laptop but I am out.

In the future, if they can add stylus support, use an amd chip for less heat, and have the battery life work well, I could switch back. Then again there may be an M2 or M1X chip out, and it may give that sweet 40C temp with no fan.

As an FYI, while browsing and youtube, on the Huawei, my temps will be 70 to 90C.

      • Guess we should stay away from this and go for the D14 with the AMD R7 3700 U Chip instead?
Looking for the best bang for buck for around $1,000 (give or take), for internet browsing, online meetings & office apps.

      • 40C temps?!?! What are you running to get the temps that high ;)

Seriously though, most of the time mine is under 35. It makes no sense, it's like magic pixie dust is being used somewhere. I have done the Thermal Pad mod on mine though.

Hi OP, wouldn't mind 20% off just a thought.

  • Matebook X Pro 2018 looks very attractive for that price. Do you think is it still worth buying? Not sure if they will be shipping a device that was manufactured 3 years ago or do they keep manufacturing them even in 2021? Thanks!

    • -1

read some reviews. it sounds GREAT

      • I am aware that 2018 version is epic. My only concern is to have a 3 year old device which might have a compromised battery life etc. Not sure :/

        • Price-wise, yes. But thinking of it being a laptop with a 3-year old processor. I wouldn't say it can achieve great performance.
Although its screen should be among the best in laptops of this price range.

          • +3

@ty99234: The improvement in Intel processors over the years are relatively moderate unlike Ryzen; if the price is right it might be an attractive buy.

            • @utsc: Thanks everyone, how about the battery? Do you think there might be some decline in battery performance as it might be sitting in the box for 3 years?

              • +2

                @onurbas: HI onurbas

no need worry about battery, still good few our colleague also bought it and using it, any issues you can get replace within the warranty period.

              • +1

@onurbas: I just briefly compared them. If my budget was 1k id definitely go with it. extra 3k will get you slightly better performance, touch screen, smaller battery and Bluetooth 4. If you can spend 1500, may as well go with the 14 inch one. Much better gpu that'll run most games okay. The 14 inch one is 200g heavier though

          • +1

@ty99234: As far as Intel goes, 8th Gen is the same as 10th gen. AMD 4000 series are a lot better than 3000 series.

        • +2

I own the 2018 model. It's still going strong. Battery life doesn't seem to be an issue at all. I would recommend It. Especially at this price. My only gripe is it has the tendency to get quite hot. I ended up using throttle stop to under power it (there's heaps of YouTube videos on this) Since then it's been running very well.

          • @Coatesy: Thx everyone, I ordered 1!

          • +1

            @Coatesy: I have added a comment earlier.
I am selling my Matebook X 2018. I feel it's not like what you have suggested.
I undervolted at -100 and worked my way down to -50. Got BSOD constantly so took it off.
            Battery life, terrible for me

Only correct choice in 2021 … MacBook with M1

  • This or Surfacebook, decisions decisions

  • Where's the Matebook 14 2020?

  • I need something 15inch and touchscreen

  • Any matebook 14 with ryzen 4800h? Or is that not an Australian release.

  • Any downsides to the D15 over the D14?

Bigger screen for cheaper… same CPU.

Smaller SSD but that really doesn't matter for me.

    • Would like to know this too.

    • I reckon that this D14 is better for slightly more money. Better processor.

      • Yeah, $86 more and I don't think my nephew will need the extra processing power. Won't be for gaming.

  • Haven't had good experiences with the quality control of Huawei laptops.

  • hey OP placed an order for 2018 Pro X model 16/512 last night.

when could I expect delivery please

    • +1

      Hi shabaka

we are aim to dispatch all the order within 24 hours, if you need to double ensure, feel free to PM me your order number or contact our CS team [email protected]

  • What is a good Windows thin laptop on which you could run some games those days? Need to play Stronghold: Warlords but Im on Mac

    • Asus ryzen zenbook, if you dont mind importing from the USA
If you dont mind 1.5kg weight then the new ryzen vivobook flip 14 is a great choice (i can attest to that since i own it myself)

  • M1 is a better choice.

  • +2

I got the Mediapad T5, thought the 3gb/32gb Wifi only version - should hopefully run better than the 2gb ram 4g version. What sold me is that it has widevine 1 support apparently, so works for HD netflix etc.

Note that price after discount was $254, not $245 as stated above, would be same for 4g version listed as they both start at $299 before discount.

Going to use it as a laptop replacement for when I'm occasionally away from my desktop, so bought the the Logitech K480 multi device bluetooth keyboard. Great reviews, and on clearance at $55 at Big W https://www.bigw.com.au/product/logitech-bluetooth-multi-dev…

  • finally got my Matebook Pro X 2018 (16/512) today

    thing of beauty. love it
