I remember getting this game for free on Steam back in ~2011 and I still haven't played it! My pile of shame is like 15 years old hahaha…

        Edit:

        It was 2012…

        • I actually finally got around to starting it last week. Graphics obviously havent aged well (which is why the Redux versions are out) but seems pretty good initially.

"In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event"

    Tony Abbott becoming PM???

It was that raw onion he bit on that caused the apocalypse.

I think the epic one was redux, is this one the redux?

    • +1

Nope, looks like it's the OG

      • Oh well, it's definitely a good game to add to the library if you don't already have it

This is the original Metro 2033 released in March 2010. Previously given away free in October 2018.
Metro 2033 Redux. An updated remaster of Metro 2033" was released in August 2014 and given away free by Epic Games in September 2019 and December 2020.

Metro 2033 - Original PC vs. Redux PC Graphics Comparison

      • I'm guessing the one on the left (redux) is considered the prettier one?

        • +3

Yeah redux was enhanced for higher resolutions

        • It says at the top of the video which side is the original or redux version!
(redux is on the right unless you're viewing a different video)

I'm guessing the one on the left (redux) is considered the prettier one?

Yes and no, it's a bit of a botched remaster.

The Redux versions (of both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light) significantly change the atmosphere of the originals from a dark, bleak, desolate-looking world to one with much better lighting and highly-saturated colours, which is kills most of the horror pretenses as the shadows are far less dramatic, the environment is less "gritty", the game is overall brighter and visibility distance is much higher.

The other issue is that it's not a faithful 1:1 clone of the original Metro 2033, as the Redux version rebuilds significant parts of the campaign with assets and models from Metro: Last Light, so it actually removes assets/models that were used in the original Metro 2033.

There are plenty of side-by-side comparison videos on YouTube that show you how inconsistent the visual improvements are, with some areas/models/textures looking significant better than the original and some looking worse.

Also note, many of the game-crippling issues that Metro 2033 suffered from have not been resolved (crashes, terrible optimisation even on very high-end hardware, stuttering, long load times, etc.)

  • If people are interested In the Redux version it’s currently only $5.99 (80% off) on Steam until March 16.

  • Huh, since when did steam give away games?

    • For a long long time. Theyve even given away Valve games.

      • Have they? Huh. I guess I've bought all of them and never noticed.

        • For like 10 years at least.

It’s more like the developer or publisher giving it away rather than Steam, unlike the when Epic runs its giveaways. Occasionally a game is made free through Steam so I’m not sure how missed them, they’re usually posted on ozbargain

I bought this in 2010 from Mighty Ape. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27992

It's still sealed in it's retail box. Through the years, I've gotten multiple free copies of the same game. Still haven't played it.
