Light Blocking Sleeping Eye Mask

Hi OZB,

I am after quality eye masks for sleeping, which completely blocks out all light, to assist with mum and I's insomnia. If they have science behind them, or are renown for top ratings, even better.

Ideally they have thought about people with high nose bridges and are padded around the eye/cheekbones, but at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter if they can block out all light rays from all contours of the face.

Also happy to make DIY modifications to the elastic into fabric so the quality/stretching of the band is not an issue.

Doesn't have to be weighted, but definitely nothing with electronics, bluetooth or wifi in built with them.

I have come across this one but have never spent $30 for an eye mask so bit of resistance.

Pls help us out fam as we are always sleep deprived and are looking for immediate solutions until we can organise some sleep testing, thanks all!

I got the Brookstone NapForm Eye Mask, love it

    • excellent I'll read their website + reviews thank you!

    • upon reviewing their masks - this will be a pass for me.

the ambient light leakage from the top corners defeats the purpose of blackout eye masks, esp. since we both have insomnia and considerable amounts of light coming through our bedroom room blinds at night.

at $38 - I would much rather get the one I linked for $30.

BUT - thank you nevertheless I do appreciate your contribution!!

I can tell you that no light gets in when I wear mine

        • thank you - I'll keep that in mind if I eventually choose this one :)

    If you need something tonight:

Sounds silly, but I actually just roll up a black T-shirt loosely and lay it over my eyes. Comfortable and blocks light. When I turn on my side, it covers my ear too, so it has the advantage of blocking sound a bit as well. You'd think it would just fall off, but it actually stays pretty well.

haha beat you already to it - been doing this by wearing it upsidedown using the neck of the shirt and covering the top half of my face

    • I do something similar, find this so comfy, I cannot go back to sleep mask anymore. Was using a sleep mask for many years before switching to this.

Prefer something lighter than a t-shirt – so I fold a bandana or face scarf into a strip to place across the eyes.
The free bandanas given out by Amex a few years ago, folded diagonally, are excellent for this purpose, it is made of very light cotton material.
Alternatively, a face scarf such as this does a great job too, when folded lengthwise.

When I turn on my side, it covers my ear too, so it has the advantage of blocking sound a bit as well

Totally agree. Not only that, in winter, this offers warmth to the ears. In summer, can use a shorter length of fabric, so it is less hot. Very flexible!

OP, perhaps have your mum try with the face scarf/bandana since it may feel less obtrusive than the upside-down t-shirt approach you employ. Which might work for her.

      • I meant the face scarf/bandana approach might work for her. OP, you can give it a try too, and see if it feels a bit more comfortable than your approach. For me, less weight on the eyes feels better, but this is an individual preference, of course.

Immediate solution - Buy restavit over the counter.

    • amazing I'll be giving this a go - any side effects / drowsiness / inability to wake up for X hours from your experience?

edit - just did some research on side effects and there's a long list - but I am willing to test it out regardless, thank you!

If I need a good nights sleep and am stressed from something in the day, I take 1/2 pill. I then have a full night of uninterrupted sleep. Once I wake, Im not so much drowsy, but relaxed til about lunch!

        • thanks for your reply!

would the full dosage KO you until the afternoon or increase drowsiness?

also if you're comfortable, are you able to share your personal sleeping troubles / other remedies you have tried?

          cheers!

          • @Brodo Faggins: No idea about full dose -never tried it. I started low, and it worked for me.

Sleep trouble mainly related to stressful situation, which would lead to mind racing at night. I now only use it very occasionally if I know I won't sleep well, and need a good nights sleep.

            • @iamherenow: Just bear in mind you can become dependent on restavit if taken regularly.

Turn lights off and have blockout curtains before going to sleep.

  • +1

Why not simply put up blockout curtains?

    • was next on the list to try - we're looking for convenience as a immediate solution until testing :)

      but thank you regardless!

would you suggest any recommendations or have experience with any? cheers

"Manta eye mask" from AliExpress. Best $7 you'll ever spend. Changed my life

It's a modular eye mask to completely block light but also allow you to open your eyes behind the mask because there's a bit of a gap

    • hahahah willing to try for $7, thanks!

  • I've been using for the past 5 years these Alaska Bear Silk Mask. They are really good, it's smooth and light so you don't feel it
