Quite happy with the ones I got from Jamell for $5, as are most other ozbargainers.

    • +5

Different quality these are 28AWG vs the 30AWG that were the Jamell. True that they probably both work but you have to compare apples with apples. This isn't a personal attack on you, but just wish people on this site would do their research before commenting. "Well my Nokia 3310 works just fine, not sure why anyone would spend more money on an iPhone/Nexus". Each to their own but these are some of the cheapest 28AWG cables around, Jamell charges around $20 for a similar spec cable.

Do you see a neg next to my name?

        • -2

          Hehehe

          I agree with you Ashlea

        Bangs head against wall
Just wish the mods could start removing votes and comments from people who clearly have NFI.
        Compare a 30AWG cable with a 30AWG cable!
As stated previously the cheapest (much cheaper than Jamell) HDMI v1.4 30AWG 2m cable is available on eBay for $3.35 delivered. So if price is your only concern then the Jamell deal was not "a bargain".

    worth $3 each.
Gold Plated Connector with copper/steel socket only encourages metal fusing.

So u can get 28AWG HDMI cables for cheaper?

  • +1

Not saying this is a bad deal, just asking, is there any point to 28awg when the cable is 1.8m?

  • there are many ebay seller claim that their cable make by 24 ,26,28,30 AWG.
how to check if they are telling the true?

  • I have these and have been very happy with them so far. Xbox, TiVo and PC in to HDMI switch in to TV.
They work like they are supposed to and are pretty well made, I've given mine a flogging and it doesn't show at all.
They are very stiff though, hard to get them to make a sharp bend.

  • If these are premium HDMI cables shouldn't they come with ferrite cores?

    • i have only ever seen them on the cheaper 30AWG cables

Always the same item at a non "bargain" price. Seems giftme5 is just using this site to drum up business for him/her self. Which is fair enough if genuine bargains were on offer. But there not.

    Not bagging on the seller..

but just for everyone's information gold plated doesn't effect how a HDMI cable works, HDMI is data, 1's and 0's
Gold Plated creates better connections with frequencies like.. audio cables to speakers

HDMI is data so it either works or it doesn't, don't fall into that trap ;)

    • and when it doesnt work u get error bits. and degraded quality. how would i know. i have seen those stupid green dots on the TV!

    • I have absolutely no idea how ALL high street electronics shops have the gall to charge 30/40 bucks minimum for an HDMI cable.

      • Uhhh… High end street electronic shops have overhead and employee wages to pay for. But money seems to grow on trees according to some people.

    • +1

Someone has never heard of electrical shielding before. Get a 50 metre HDMI cable without a repeater and see if it works well in an apartment block.

    • Gold plated plugs have absolutely nothing to do with, "frequencies like.. audio cables to speakers". Gold never reacts to oxygen, so it doesn't corrode or tarnish.

I bought six of these because I like the look of the connectors. Niiiice

    • They do look quite nice :)

  • Can someone explain what AWG is? Bit of a noob/tightass in relation to cables. Think I paid $10 at a 2 dollar shop years ago
I only have cheap hdmi cables pretty sure 1.3. If I was to get these would I get better performance? I have a 60inch plasma with ps3. The picture is ok but compared to some plasmas i have seen in jb etc where the picture looks led like. Will these cables make my blurays look better?

Hi AWG is American Wiew Gauge…if less number then Cable is THICK..And it is good for current conduct.

If your current cables are working fine with no issues new cables will give no benefit or improved picture.

If your cables are version 1.3 they will likely also support 3D if you ever upgrade.

OK, having 40+ years electronics background (both digital and analog) I feel reasonably confident in answering this question.

Firstly to the AWG question. AWG is a wire gauge with a lower number being thicker, so AWG 28 is thicker than AWG 30 (interesting side note, it was known as Brown & Sharpe in my day when I used to buy it from Bambach to rewire everything from transformers down to guitar pickups).

Almost all HDMI cables will work to a point. If your needs are basic then pretty much anything will do (including old spec cables). Where you will come unstuck is if you are using some of the "el-cheapo" cables and expecting more advanced features. What do I mean by that? Well, 3D requires higher standard cables. Also, the CEC function is missing from many of the "el-cheapo" cables. What is that? I'm glad you asked. This is a function where the push of a single button will turn on the blu-ray player, switch on the TV and amplifer, change the inputs on the tv and amp to the correct ones etc. Several of the cheaper HDMI cables I've tested simply don't work with this function, usually because they do not have all 19 pins of the cable wired.

Do you need ferrite cores? No. Do you need gold plating? No. What you do want is something with is HDMI 1.4 spec (current latest is 1.4b), has all 19 pins wired (correctly) and AWG 28 (or better for longer runs). How do I know if it's AWG 28? Well, if you were me you would cut the cable and measure it with a micrometer.

As to your last question, the HDMI cable won't make your picture look more like the ones on display in JB. Check your plasma display settings and you will probably find a mode called "Vivid" or somesuch. This is known in the industry as "torch" mode and displays a very bright and overly saturated image which might look good in the showroom but is not accurate. If you prefer that, go ahead and change it but I prefer that Cate Blanchett doesn't look like an American Indian.

Final point… I'm not saying cheap cables are all bad, just some. Caveat emptor!

      • Thanks appreciated for your in depth answer cheers

      • +1

The quality is important depending on the length of the cable. Electrical shielding applies to analogue and digital signals.

AWG (American Wire Gauge) Just refers to the thickness of the wire strands in a HDMI cable… The thicker the better (Lower AWG = thicker)

Anyways with cheap cables that use 30AWG the data's more likely to get lost, and with 5m/10m cables that use a really bad AWG there's a chance they won't work at all.

Jamell cables aren't bad, but there are better deals. YES, I have done my research, these guys do better deal (IMO, the best deals)

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2M-28AWG-HDMI-Cable-FULL-HD-1080P…

This isn't a bad deal though considering registered post is $3 and they appear to be nylon braided.. but if you just want one HDMI cable buy from the link above^

EDIT: Regie, a new HDMI cable won't make a difference, JB HiFI most likely have really nice $2000 LED TVs… They're going to look better than yours anyway.
