Car Number Plate Bumped

So this happened around 9:00pm tonight, my wife was driving home and we are living in an apartment building and the parking is in the basement which you need to access the car lift to go down below.

While maneuvering back and forward to the lift, there is a car (ute) parked on the front of the lift. Then suddenly, a person came from outside the gate and claiming he saw that we hit his number plate (which was bent in the middle). I was a bit shocked as I didn’t really believe we hit him as we are really far and we would hit his bumper first rather than his number plates. He requested our number and took a photo of our car. I didn’t had the chance to get his details nor his plates as was shocked and the way he approached us. Then they we’re rushing to go out of the bldg but he claims he was from the other floor. We don’t have a rear cam to prove anything but there is 3 cctv cameras on the spot but hopefully we’ll get something.

Also, he was claiming that there’s a scratch behind our car which is the spot that hit to his plates. After he was gone, we just wiped it with wipes and it was just only a dirt. Wife was really terrified. Should we be bothered at all? He said he’s gonna call soon. We emailed the building manager so we can get a footage. Thanks for any help.

If there is no damage on your car and no footage, it didn't happen. Maybe speak to your insurance to get advice should it escalated.

    • Thank you. We’ll consider that for sure. Just worried that this is our first altercation with someone else and we always drive safely. Just worried that he’ll claim something else.

    Car Number Plate Bumped

Contact Corrections Victoria, they have should be able to give you a quote to repair the number plate…

Unscrew their number plate, grab a hammer and anvil, smack the thing on the anvil with hammer until it becomes flat and straight again, screw back on car, job done.

    • I know it’s not a hard job to fix it but just wondering if it’s a scam or something else as we 99% sure we didn’t hit him and it was super dodgy as they were like waiting for someone to get close at their car. Not really sure what he wants.

Probably wanted you to pay for his bent plate so he doesnt have to do it….

        • Probs. Just wondering how much it cost to replace a number plate? Smh.

If you didn’t hit him, block, ignore etc. don’t engage.

Even if he has insurance and the damage is only a number plate then it won’t be worth claiming so you won’t have an insurance co on your back.

      This x infinity.

    • Thanks for the advice. Bothered some few friends last night and this is what they said as well. We just requested a footage for backup.

Checked the car’s rear bumper again this morning, no anything. I even checked the space between the red line mark (when reversing) against the wall and there’s still atleast a person can walk between them so definitely I didn’t hit him.

Just really worried as wife was stressed and terrified.

      • Terrified about what?
That the guy will get violent or that in some alternate reality she will have to pay for a number plate?
Tell your wife to relax, NOTHING will happen.

And take some dated photos of your bumper in case this guy decides to make it 'look like' you did bump into him after all if you know what I mean?

And next time try to get your own photos of their ‘damage’ so they don’t try and pin some additional damage on you.

The state motor vehicle department (VicRoads, QLD Transport, etc.) replace plates for a very cheap price.

Also, don't worry about it unless you get a letter of demand.
Once you get a letter of demand, just forward it to your insurance company with photos of your car showing no damage and they will handle it all.
Your insurance company will tell them to bugger off and that will be the end of it.
In the meantime, if the person contacts you, tell them you've referred it to your insurance company. If they keep harassing you after that, just block them.

If it was in NSW, a replacement number plate may just put the car into the write off category.

but there is 3 cctv cameras on the spot but hopefully we’ll get something.

Ok, so it will be captured if you hit them or not. Review the footage with them, if you hit them, pay for replacement number plates and move on. If you didn't, move on.

    Steal his number plates tonight

replace it with yours, go to petrol station, get free fuel, drive on the freeway and speed doing 200km/hr, get flashed by the stationary speed cameras on said freeway, continue speeding pass every single speed trap road street or intersection you know of avoiding any cops(Unless you feel like a thrill of a car chase and have confidence escaping from them), come back home, replace your plates back on and put his plates on his car and relax. Wait for cops to rock up to his place and then smile devilishly as he acts innocent about the all the speeding fines and petrol he stole as the police beat him to submission as you watch from afar. If he accuses you of setting him up, play dumb.

Time to get a dashcam - lots of scammers out there

  • What's the big deal with the number plate? Custom, special, standard?

And… how much damage can you do to a number plate with slow moving parking manouver with a painted plastic bumper???

If he sues, tell him to get a solicitor. He'll have to pay the solicitor to try and recover… umm… lemme see, bent number plate…. supreme court material?

*shakes head in disbelief, something NQR here.

  • It's a scam, I had it happen to me guy stole my keys in traffic claiming that I hit him when I didn't and then 4 months later still hasn't sent the bill.

I think they are farming for details to do fraud at the banks but the cops are useless and won't do anything

    • Stole your keys?

      • Out of ignition, rached and grabbed them before I knew what was happening as he came out of nowhere . As I said I didn't hit him so wasn't sure why he was even yelling

Big scam to steal people's details to do bank fraud and the cops let them get away

        • Lucky mine are on the left.

Someone tries that, we get to see how fast they can run.
