DWI Deal of The Day: Canon Powershot G12 for $413, Including Free Priority Shipping

40

Pretty good price for an extremely capable compact, especially those of you who likes your manual controls. Went in halves with a mate during the Harvey Norman "Buy one get one free" deal, so it wasn't as cheap as that, but it's still a very reasonable price.

Just on a personal note, for those of you looking at a G12 as a backup for your DSLR, be wary that operation speed is WAY slower than any DSLR, especially load-up time, time between shots and AF speed in low light. Well, it was for me anyways…dunno if that's across the board for all P&S's, but there were some moments of frustrations when I was trying it out at a wedding recently, missed quite a few candid shots because of it…but it may just be me..:)

Start reading the above topic and decide for yourself. Not going to neg the deal, but I have bad experience with them.

    • Crap…didn't realize that their service and reputation has gone downhill a bit..

  • Any chance you can explain a little more about the slow performance?? Can it shoot raw and does it have selectable af points. and yes i know the virwfinder is rubbish.

    • You might want to read this review on DP Review.

    • Before I start, I must admit that the DSLR's I've owned is a 450D, a 7D (which has since busted, sadly), and am using a 1D MkIII now, so any comparisons with the above DSLR's (especially the 7D and the 1D) is OBVIOUSLY blatantly unfair. But it's just that when you are so used to the speed of DSLR's, it's frustrating to go back to something slower, even when compared with my 450D…well, it is for me anyways..

To answer your question, the slow bits I found frustrating was the time the camera takes to load between shots, the time between pressing the shutter button and the shot actually being taken, and the slowness of AF in low light (it takes AGES to focus in low light). I am being extremely nick-picky, and I'm not sure whether it's just a G12 thing or it's across the board for all P&S's, but I also hate missing shots..

Other points - yes you can shoot in RAW, and from memory it does have selectable AF points (though I mostly stuck to the center AF point)…and agree with you, the OVF is practically unusable. However, for the price I got the G12, I shouldn't really be complaining so much, especially when you take into consideration image quality, all the manual controls, build quality (it is really built like a tank), reasonable ISO performance, ability to shoot within 1cm of subject in macro mode etc..

      • Cheers, Im using the 550D and dont think I could fathom shutter lag and long intervals between shots. I will wait for the G13! or atleast wait for an EP3 to come on special! Cheers

  • Bought something from them and it did arrive thankfully. But…

They give the impression that they are an Australian company. They have an Australian website and invoice you in AUD.

In fact, they are a HK company and their prices don't include GST. The goods are shipped from HK. I didn't know that when I ordered.

If something goes wrong with delivery or product quality, I don't know how you would get on!

Reading the Whirlpool comments makes me even more nervous.

    • i've dealt with them in the past a few times (about 2 years ago) ordered some SLR gear. Ordered and delivered in same week. Not sure what their performance is now.

Same here. I ordered a Galaxy Note on the 21st December and still have yet to receive anything. I called them up about 10 later and they advised (after many calls) that there is none in stock and that stock will arrive in a week. Called them up 10 days after that and they still have no stock. I was advised I need to wait another week or two so I cancelled my order but still have yet to get a refund. Very dodgy would not buy from them again.

      • funny that, they offered me a refund for the note which never arrived (did anyone get one of these?!) but i am yet to accept their offer…

  • I ordered from them middle of december just before xmas and had no problems. Delivery was quick and the price was great. Some people seem to have had problems but my experience with them was positive. Got replies to my email queries and spoke with them on the phone with out problem.

  • I've dealt with them twice, the last time was 9 months ago. The shipping was really fast (~2-3 days since ordering), couldn't fault their service. Maybe due to christmas hectic period?
Anyway, note that Canon G12 is pretty old camera (>1 year) and new replacement is currently due (http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/12/more-super-g-series-talk/).

    • I ordered a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab on Thursday last week (at midnight) and got the tablet delivered to my place in Melbourne Tuesday this week. I am impressed by the fast shipping regardless of holidays.

Not negging, but I've got bad experience with them. Seems that their motto is ""WE DO NOT MAKE LOSS FOR ANY ORDER", just like what they write in their e-mails to many customers following up order. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1830802&p…

As above I will not neg here, but had really bad experience with them.
Bought vid camera, great price & quick delivery - perfect so far.
Then about 2 months later camera just died.
Sent it back for repairs to their authorized agent.
To cut the long story short it nearly 4 months to get it back, only after I threatened to reverse my CC transaction.
When I got it back I had to take it to the shop to have the lens cleaned because it fingerprints & crap on it. BTW it cam back from HK, not Australia.
Don't bother ringing their service number after your purchase- no one ever answers it.
Bottom line - great prices & fast shipping, but if something goes wrong they do not want to know you.
