Android TV, Chromecast, media player or similar under $80

Hi all,
Uni student on a bit of budget trying to repurpose a pendo tv I got for free, was looking at buying a chromecast with google tv or something similar and was unsure of what to get, if anyone can give me a brief overview of whats good under this price it'd be much appreciated. Have had bad experiences with xiaomi mi boxes if that matters.

Thanks,
Sheepytime

You can find brand new Chromecast/Google TV for about $70 on FB marketplace. Most people get it via a deal and sell off the unit. For example the Chromecast/Netflix deal so it's usually un-opened. Hope that helps.

yep, or if cant find one at that price, just get the chromecast with google tv for no more then $99, just out of budget, but very worth it imo, will outlast your uni days :)

    Foxtel Now Box from Kogan.

Add/remove from cart a few times each couple of days, then they'll reduce the price first to $79, then later $49.

      sounds interesting….

        Don't do it!
At least not until you can accept the limitations. Foxtel Now box is gimped hard.
Can't even run Binge (or Kayo?) on it, Foxtel's own service(s)!

I own one. There are no extra limitations. Works same as Vodafone TV. Has antenna connection too.

@aboabo: So it no longer directs you to Foxtel content by default?
Does it still show ads for Foxtel content on the homescreen?

Does it allow you to install Binge and Kayo, cause it's not that long ago that they blocked them?
            https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/foxtel-now-box-dumps-binge-…

Does it have Amazon Prime yet? (it didn't originally)

If these issues aren't resolved, then I'd argue it's gimped and not comparable to Vodafone TV which has none of these annoyances.

            • @ESEMCE: Are saying vodafone tv has Amazon Prime now?

            • @ESEMCE: Inbuilt Chromecast allows you to use any app you want.

              • @aboabo: And it allows that?
Once again, I'm only going by history, it used to not accept Casting from Netflix back when Netflix was blocked on the device.

Does it accept casting from Binge/Kayo, or is that blocked cause those apps are similarly blocked?

(I'd have to check on the Amazon Prime on VodaTV)

                • @ESEMCE: Has inbuilt Netflix. I have no need for other apps you speak of.

                  • @aboabo: Yeah it does now, but it didn't on launch and Netflix couldn't be Cast either.
Assuming the same rules apply now to the blocked Binge and Kayo apps, it's a gimped device.

                    • @ESEMCE: Again, it has Chromecast, which you've already recommended.

                      • @aboabo: "Chromecast built in" is not the same as a dedicated Chromecast.
They sound the same, but they're not.
Case in point, Netflix works on any Chromecast, where it was originally blocked in software on the Foxtel box.

                        • @ESEMCE: Is there a Google webpage out there stipulating the differences between certain Chromecast systems?

If not, maybe there should be, because I'm only finding out through second hand news without clarification.

                          • @aboabo: I'm not aware of it, but the Netflix issue is mentioned in all the (pretty scathing) launch reviews for the Foxtel Now box.

I have foxtel… I suck as it is.
I need something to do Kayo for moto 2/GP and footy.

            @pharkurnell: Maybe start a Discussion.

            • @aboabo: na I'll have a search around, surely it would have been discussed 20932039483209 times

    • Foxtel Now Box (Netflix Compatible) https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/foxtel-now-box-netflix-compatib…

      Currently $49

    I'd recommend any Chromecast.
They're cheap and work with (pretty much) every service.
Use phone as the remote (easier to search/scroll for stuff than any remote can and will ever be) and Laptop/Chrome browser if you need an unsupported service like AppleTV+

  • Thanks for the input everyone! The google tv is interesting, used one before, is the fire stick tv any good either?
