RTX Dualphone 3088 (Landline/PC-Less Skype Phone) 50% OFF $82.99 Inc. Delivery

250
skypeRTX50

For the past year I've been looking for a wireless (and pc-less!) phone that I could use with Skype for incoming calls to my business but they were all $200 and above. Suffice to say I was stoked when I found Skype selling the RTX Dualphone 3088 for 50% off the original retail price - including shipping. (I also received an email after placing my order saying I'd been upgraded to express delivery for no additional charge.)

The prices on eBay are all between $100-$200 and on Amazon UK, £83.62.

Features:

  • Skype calls without a computer.
  • Regular landline calls.
  • Cordless phone.
  • Indoor range 50m; outdoor range 300m from base station.
  • More than 10 hours talk time; up to 100 hours standby time.
  • Color LCD screen.
  • DECT wireless technology - won’t interfere with WiFi networks.
  • Award winning Danish design.
  • Supports Skype features like online numbers, calls to phones, voicemail call history, status and other features.
  • Contact list for both Skype and landline numbers, automatically synchronized with your Skype account.
  • Automatic software updates.
  • High quality speakerphone.
  • Option to use with serial headset.

In the box:

  • Cordless DUALphone handset with belt clip.
  • Handset charging cradle with power supply.
  • DUALphone base station with power supply.
  • Ethernet cable.
  • Analog landline cord.
  • Installation guide and mini quick guide.
  • 2 AAA rechargeable batteries.

You also apparently get 60 min FREE Skype credit - though I'm not sure how that's handled. Possibly a coupon/voucher shipped with the product? I'll update this when my order arrives. I'm also unsure of offer expiry, or how long it's been on sale for that matter.

Apologies for the vagueness but it's an awesome price so I thought I'd share!

^_^

Plus:
For $20 more you can get an additional handset @ $102.95
For $30 more you can get TWO additional handsets @ $112.95
(Thanks mighty and jbk!)

IPOD Touch as an alternative ?

    • But IPOD Touch can't make landline calls.

      • But an iPhone can and it can do video calls too

        • My iPhone is my personal mobile phone and I wanted to separate personal/business calls and not have to pay a monthly fee to a mobile phone provider for another mobile plan. SkypeIn is essentially free and free is always good.

iPhone can make landline calls? How do you connect it to the wall?

pretty decent deal, although the product is becoming less relevant these days with Skype on android/iOS.

side note: they're also selling the bundles with the additional handset/s (currently "50% off" down to $39.99 ea):

    http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-au/phones/cordless-router/rtx-… - 1 x extra handset @ $102.95 (inc shipping)
    http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-au/phones/cordless-router/rtx-… - 2 x extra handsets @ $112.95 (inc shipping)

    • Just wanted to point out that as far as iOS is concerned, you can't receive calls to a SkypeIn number due to Apples restrictions of apps running in the background/timeout issues - or something to that effect. That'll probably change eventually but for now it's a huge flaw. I've got Skype on my iPhone, my dekstop computer, my laptop and even my PSP but with this wireless handset, it's completely independent and connected 24/7 with the ability to receive calls to a SkypeIn number. I think that's pretty nifty.

    • Up to three handsets but how many concurrent lines will it support? That is, can I make or receive another call if someone is using one of the other handsets on another call?

you're living in the past man. I mentioned that like 90 seconds ago.

  • Good one, thanks!

  • How do they compare with Siemen's handsets?

    • Not sure about the Siemen's one or the current RTX but I owned a Netgear Skype Wifi and its total crap. The software never gets updated and its mission impossible to find a battery for it. No generics, OEM or original battery can be found, and the battery life that comes with the netgear phone is rubbish.

Hopefully this RTX is way better to utilise my annual subscription with Skype.

I bought this for about $150 6 months ago.
    When you're in a call:
This phone to a landline or mobile is pretty clear.
This phone to a desktop/laptop depends on how good the other persons microphone is. For me, it's difficult to clearly hear certain people on the other line, but I put that down to their microphone being crap.

The colour screen isn't as nice as it looks in the pictures. If anything, the screen display is similar to when Nokia brought out coloured screens for the first time.

Also, the battery depletes extremely fast. If you let it idle and don't leave it charging, it will deplete in almost a day. So don't expect to only charge it for 1-2 hours and have the batteries work for 3 days, idling.
I usually have my router on for most of the day so I just leave the charger plugged into the same powerpoint. Not a big deal for me, but for others, be careful.

Overall, it's a good product and worth it, especially for $83.

  • just got one - it's good for older people who are not familiar with gadgets and laptops
going give it a try and then pass it to my mum

  • At least it has AAA batteries, can always install higher milliamp ones fro longer run time.

    • this device is about 2006 vintage so probably are the nimh batteries. Looks solid build, excellent range and accomodating frequency if your running all sorts of things:-)

Probably the last you'll see anything like this again at such a good price. I'll put on skype and landline/voip-Pennytel.

    • I'm still using a Phillips voip3211s, bought around 5-6years ago from Target for $19
Bargain I say, does landline and Skype, and uses replaceable AAA batteries too.

  • Has anyone tried to use this with one of the VOIP modem+routers in a Naked DSL setup? Any feedback appreciated.

  • any idea whether the additional handsets can have their own skype accounts?

  • Great price for those without a a skype to go number. Personally I dial my own to go number from any device landline/mobile that then diverts my calls internationally. Skype to go numbers are for free I believe when you have a subscription.

  • Yeah I was eyeing Skype phones a little while ago.
But now there are sub $100 smart phones that you could just install Skype on and get a dock for.

I wonder how well it would compare, considering it would have built in browser and be designed for long idle time it probably is worth serious consideration.

  • Looks great. Gonna get one for Myself plus one for my old folks. This plus Skype in = bye bye Telstra land line.

    Couple quick questions;

    • 240v compatible out of the box?
    • Is it compatible with Skype voicemail?
      • if so, Can you configure voicemail from the phone itself?
    • probably a silly question; will it function 100% as a Skype only phone (it is marketed as a dual line phone. I am wondering if I only connect it to modem/router, will there be remnants of the dual-line functionality that may confuse some users? (I.e. my mum!)
    • Edit: Thought it was from US site hence the 240v question.

  • package arrived and works just fine.

  • I put off buying this phone at $82.99 and just had a quick look at the skype Australia site to buy it. The price is now $98.99!!? It still shows 50% off, not sure why the supplier has increased the price. Will have to wait or look elsewhere. Is everyone else seeing the same price?

    • I'm seeing $296 or only $128 if u want it with 2 additional handsets… ?? Pay less for more stuff? Crazy!

      • Hehe it is crazy :) But thats the thing, 1 & 2 extra handsets where cheaper before. Just checked the site and the extra handset models are no longer on sale, only the handset alone or handset + base are 50% off. The promotional code (skypeRTX50) does not work for the 1 & 2 extra hanset bundles. Pity..

  • 2 extras now $257

  • Pretty good I got upgraded shipping as well!!
