What Premium Fuel Do You Use?

Morning fellow users,

Forgot to fuel up last night and made the dash this morning on the way to work, put V-Power instead of my usual BP Ultimate.

Got me thinking….what 98 fuel do you use?

Am I wasting my money going 98 everytime?

  • BP Ultimate all the way.
When i saw the damage Shell Fuels did to customers cars that was the last time i ever put it in any of my vehicles

    • +2

I've just filled the entire tank with it šŸ¤£

      • When i was working at a mechanical workshop, we had a couple (yes more than 1) customers who had issues with their fuel systems (one actually had major engine issues) when we looked into it it was clearly due to poor quality fuel, you would then have the discussion with the customer as to what fuel they used and every single time the answer was V-Power.
This is customers who had filled with VP every single time for months / years… 1 Fill is not gonna break your car

my car requires 98 (can get away with 95 but 98 is suggested) and i switched to BP ever since which from our research is some of the best quality fuel around.

NOW i am sure VP is fine, they would not be able to sell it if it wasn't but its def not a fuel i would be using every time and exclusively given what i have seen

        • Yeah stuff shell too for not carrying 91. Last couple of times I got caught close to empty (I never learn), pulled into a shell (2 different places across town) and the minimum non-ethanol they had was 95. Had to pay for something I didn't need.

It's funny that people are saying BP gives them better results when Mobil supply BP in Vic and BP supply Mobil/711 in NSW and so on. Essentially its the same fuel between them. Except 7eleven uses premium additives and detergents in U91 which is why they are the only servo who can use the term "Special Unleaded" without getting sued. - El Grande

BP Ultimate in VIC is Mobil Fuels according this this comment
I've also verified the claims (and you're welcome to do so) by doing your own research with the Australian Institute of Petroleum documents

AIP document showing only two refineries in Victoria, Geelong (Viva Energy Refinery) and Altona (Mobil refinery)

Am I wasting my money going 98 everytime?

    Yes

    • Unless the car they own is tuned for it (or requires it)

    • 91 or 95 then?

Should you ever use the 98?

      • +2

What does it say on your fuel flap or manual? My car says 95 octane minimum but I run a tune so only use 98.

        • Think it says E-10 suitable but I've always ran with 98 Fuel.

          • -1

@iNeed2Pee: Then use whatever you want. 98 is more energy dense so theoretically it should be more fuel efficient.

            • +2

@yippy: More energy dense than E10 yes. Than 91 or 95 no.

              @yippy:

              98 is more energy dense

No it isn't… what a load of shit. 98 is the same energy density as 91, it just has a different anti-knock additive added to make it 98.

Example. E10 is LESS energy dense than Regular, but has a higher RON (94 vs. 91). RON is NOT a measure of energy density.

            • +5

              @yippy: You're dense.

    BP ultimate and Costco 98

    • how much cheaper is costco?

    • I used to use BP 98 as it is the best but then when money got tight, been using 7/11 and WOW/Caltex 98. I have seen a drop in fuel economy with the cheaper brands.

    • +2

Costco rocks, price is unbeatable. Itā€™s my go to unless Iā€™m not near it.

  • +3

Costco - I think this is mobil as well.

Any service station as long as it's 98

    7-eleven ethanol.

  • +2

I don't have a car that requires 98, it's a total waste if the engine doesn't make use of it.

Where are all my 7/11 supremists? Holler

the cheapest one because it's more premium on my wallet

Am I wasting my money going 98 everytime?

If you drive a Hyundai i30, yes, if you drive a Porsche GT3/RS, no.

    • What about my GT3 Touring?

      • +1

Diesel… you need to look at the Cetane rating… :P

  • Someone told me BP has the best 98 so I have stuck with that ever since….can anyone verify this urban myth with actual data or am I forking out a premium for absolutely no reason (my ozb badge is at risk!!)

    • +2

Depends on your car, what it requires and what you are hoping to achieve.

Generally, if your car does not require 98, it is of no benefit. While you may get a slight increase in range (and I mean slight, not the 200 extra km some peanuts will have you believe) the offset is the higher cost of the fuel. The extra range will not be enough to offset the extra costs associated with running premium fuel if your car does not require it.

As for math/data, I have done this to death on this forum and I'll see if I can dredge up one of my old posts where i ruin a users day where they claimed putting 98 in their Corolla was doing wonders and it worked out it was actually costing them money.

      Can read about it "here'

      • Thanks for that, I am certain that it needs 98, just wondering if 98 from various brands are actually different (Coles Express, Carltex, BP) and would I ruin the engine by putting" "low-quality" 98 in?

        • +2

I am certain that it needs 98

Is that what it says inside the fuel flap? Is that what it says in the owners manual? Is it a Ferrari or a Porsche? Is it a high end euro luxury/sports car? Is it turbo charged or one of the new high output, small capacity, high turbo pressure eco type engines? The market for cars that "require" 98 is pretty narrow, as most are either 91 or 95…

But sure, if you vehicle "needs" 98, you really should run it on 98. But if it's a Camry Sportivo…

          • @pegaxs: I wish! But it's not a Camry Sportivo :P

Turbo-charged, fuel cap says 95 min, but I drive 70km a week and with how economical the car runs, a few dollars difference between 95 and 98 don't bother me. I am more concerned about if there is truly a difference between different brands of 98, in that lower quality 98 would ruin your car, or is it just from a fuel efficiency perspective.

            • @Banana: I'm guessing from "here" that you drive a 2019 Golf something something. So, putting in 98 isnt really going to net you much, but the price difference between 95 and 98 being much narrower than the 91 to 98 gap may make it worth the difference (even then, I still doubt it.)

As for what is the best 98. Meh, it's personal preference most of the time. It's like asking "What's better, Apple or Samsung?". What ever you like using and have a good experience with is what you should use. Get it from a reputable seller that has plenty of turn over of what you want to buy.

Getting fresh, clean fuel is more important than what brand you put in it. Most people with a bad experience of bad fuel bought it from a trashy out of the way place to save themselves $3. It either sat around too long or just got contaminated from poor handling. I have had bad fuels from all major brands, but it was more about the service station than it was about the refining of the fuel.

              • @pegaxs: I guess you have just reaffirmed me to just keep doing what I am doing - I typically refuel my tank from a BP on a busy road, I assume they get plenty of turn over just from its geographical location. Cool thanks for that :) I will consult you again when I get my red hot Ferrari, one day!

  • I'm interested to know, for everyone spending the extra $$$ for BP Ultimate (fair enough) are you also using top of the line synthetic oil at every change? I'm in the camp of using the best oils but when it comes to fuel I'm happy to use the 98 from my local Speedway as the turnover there is huge and I've never had a problem with their fuel. The only time I ever had a fuel contamination issue was from a United but I think that had a lot more to do with the specific location rather than United fuel more generally.

    • +2

I'm guessing if your car requires 98 then it most likely stipulates full synthetic and likely A5/B5 in the maintenance manual.

  • Caps says minimum 95, but I'd always only go for BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power only.

  • I voted BP ultimate - because everyone else did so it must be best.

    • That's a pretty poor reason.

I voted BP because of that dog that says BP Rewards.

      • More votes have come in. I might have to start going for Supreme + (7/11- Mobil).

(I donā€™t actually purchase any petrol, except for work mowers etc)

  • -4

My car says premium fuel only but I always put E10 in it, it's a company car so I don't really care about the long-term effects it might cause.

    • +2

      Devilish

      • -3

What can I say, I'm a rebel. Haha

    • +2

      More like fourthreetwoone bang

    • I hired a car from Hertz. They told me to use E10. Cap said 95. Mental note: dont buy an ex fleet car that requires anything better than E10.

    • +1

Probably no long term effect. If it says premium and you are running E10, it is 94RON (compared to 95 for premium) probably collected all those negs for just saying E10 and from the same people who fill their rental cars with E10.

  • My fuel cap says ā€˜benzina senza piombo 95 ottaniā€™ which Google translate told me means ā€˜95 RON unleadedā€™ is the minimum. As itā€™s a 900cc 2cyl turbo, it really doesnā€™t run on 91. But the performance difference between 95 and 98 is negligible.

You shouldn't admit to owning a fiat 500 in public, you'll get bullied relentlessly like pegaxs.

      • Itā€™s actually a Fiat Panda. And I get enough stick from my family - despite it being the most reliable car out of all of theirs with the lowest running cost - that Iā€™m sure I can deal with internet strangers.

        • James may would be suitably impressed at least.

        • Itā€™s actually a Fiat…

          šŸ˜šŸ„° Thatā€™s all I needed to read…

  • Ran BP98 for a year on my i30N and recently switched over to 95. I didn't see or feel a difference in performance, efficiency or mileage.

  • Costco 98 all the way , pretty sure its sourced from Mobil.

Prior to that Caltex Vortex 98 , never had a single issue.

If your car isn't tuned for 98 (I.E like my Toyota GR Yaris is), no point using it you are just wasting money. 91 has the same energy co-efficient as 98. only reason to use 95 is for the additive package which keeps the engine as a whole cleaner or if your car manufacturer specifies premium. i have found in my experience using 91 over 95 you tend to have alot more deposits that end up in the engine oil sooner and turn the oil darker but with 95 the engine oil 5000km later is almost the same color/consistency as when you first pour it in.

  • 7/11 is my go to. always cheap :D

    • I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say whatever 7/11 sells.

  • I use BP ultimate, don't do many KM but I only get 450km from my 88L fuel tank would hate to know how the engine would react to lower octane or if my car would even start on that. Old school V8 Italian cars they just throw fuel at them sounds great though city driving it is rated at 28L/100km
