Is There Any Way to Legally Sell a Bottle of Hibiki 12 Japanese Whisky?

I have a bottle of Japanese whisky that I was given which has since grown in value given the don't bottle it any more.

It's unlikely I'll drink it, given it's (now) value). Is there any way to sell this legally, or do I have to have a liquor licence?

It's Hibiki 12 for anyone playing at home.

Vic allows for a temporary limited license, I see you're in Brisbane, I dont think Qld has the same thing though. I think in the last few posts like these people have recommended auction sites that do liquor and sell it for you.

    • These auction houses are probably the only way.

  • Re gift it, have a few friends around and drink it (how often are you going to get to drink a $1200 bottle?) or google and sell it to one of the many places that buy such things (keeping in mind you won't get near the actual value).

I would suggest regifting it or selling it "under the table" to a friend for cash.

  • Hi OP, just out of interest how much is a bottle of 12yr hibiki?

    • around 1k

    • If you can find them, normally over $1k now!

  • I've been looking for a 17 or 21 year bottle. But depending how much you think it's worth, you may be able to "gift" it to me and I'll make a donation to your for a 'reasonable' amount. What do you think would be a reasonable amount for that bottle?

      • I've been wondering the same, as I have few bottles that I won't drink. Surely there is a place where friends can swap or gift whiskies…
        Where is said place though???

        • The bottle shops i have spoken to either offer to let you sell on consignment at a high % or offer a below market rate for your bottle.

Let me know if you're able to find a decent place.

  • Auction houses or resellers is the only legal way. You won’t get the value though. They’ll buy it for a certain value and then take a cut. To be honest though, why not drink it? It isn’t a everyday thing but surely it is something you can enjoy.

  • Goddamn. I've been through several bottles of the Hibiki 17 over the years bringing bottles back from Japan when I or others have travelled there. Nice whisky.

Is anyone actually buying it at the prices being quoted or is this just wishful thinking by the sellers?

    • mostly wishful thinking after every man and their dog bulk purchased bottles which pushed up the prices.

The Hibiki 17 was a very nice whisky when it was ~$150 a bottle before the mass hysteria of Japanese whiskies kicked in a few years ago. It is a poor whisky at $1k+ however.

      • Agree, very happy at "traditional prices", but I'm not buying it at $1k+ (or anything else for that matter).

    • Yeah, plenty. Thing is, it's not a $1k whisky! It's a $120 whisky selling for $1k +

I didn't know you needed a license to sell a single bottle of collectable alcohol. I sold a bottle of JW Blue on eBay many years ago. Lucky I didn't get done I guess.

  • We tasted a $200 bottle that was brought back from Japan and given to us as a gift…checked a few years later and it is for sale for $1k to $2k as there was only 500 made…didn't think to Google it beforehand…🤦‍♂️😭

But yeah, didn't think of the legalities of trying to sell it.

PS doesn't taste anything special (at least to me)…tastes like tears now. 😂

  • Sorry for ressurecting an old thread - but curious if OP found a reliable source to sell?

Been thinking about offloading my old Hibiki 21 as well…
