Canberra to Kosciusko - 4x4 Trails and Routes

Heading camping and 4 wheeling shortly. Just wondering if anybody knows of a 'back way' to get from the Brindabellas near Canberra to Kosciusko NP near Perisher? Not fussed on difficulty, the tougher the trail the better. I have been doing a bit of research online and there is no real off road route because it is quite a distance and very close to highways. But I'd love to keep it as off-road as possible but still get there in a day. Any recomendations?

    This is about as backroad as you are going to get. Will depend if Long Plain Road is open though

    • Thanks for putting this together for me ! I'll definitely stick to this as a main route and maybe do in and out branch offs on this general route.

      Correct me if I am wrong, but the southern part of your route (B72) is sealed road and the northern part of the route is all graded dirt road and two wheel passable (in the dry). Is that correct?

        The first part from Brindabella Road to Long Plain Road is fire trails. It will depend on the road conditions at the time and the last time they have been graded. Generally should be ok though. You can also just follow Broken Cart Trail all the way to Long Plain. Long Plain Road is very smooth and flat and plus has the benefit of Blue Waterholes campground for a quick stop.

    In OZ we call the tracks not trails.

      Some are called trails some are called tracks.

      In Victoria 'Track' is used a lot more than 'Trail' and the opposite is true in NSW

      For example;

      Blue Rag Range Track
      The Oaks Fire Trail
