don't for get the Sigma 50mm 1.4, I'm not on commission from Sigma but the difference is enormous..I love the value of the 50mm 1.8 though

      • +1

Yes..of course 1.4 would be great.. I'm just saving for something wide(er). Not really into portraits :)
Having said that..I absolutely love my 50mm 1.8D
        I'm a Nikon user BTW … D90….love it! And a F65

        • +1

Check the Tokino 11-16mm, its a great cheap wide option..and good for Video as well..

  • +1

    received mine today, thanks poohah

    • +1

      Excellent, hallelujah Aust Post..

  • +2

Just wondering, why don't you allow some form of downloading the video at say, the same price as buying the DVD? It's not like it would cost you more, there are many free or low cost distribution methods.

    • +1

TO stop piracy…I guess. Of course anyone could just rip the dvd which I'm guessing many have done so that they don't have to lug the dvd/player around.

    • +2

You are right and I do actually do this on another product, my course is my baby and I really want people to have the whole enchilada, DVD packaging ect..thats why i don't offer it out like that. It's more time consuming and expensive for me but for me its worth it.

I resell another product and its set up as a video stream, there are 7 videos and its a completely different animal to my course, this course is set up for someone who wants to do photography as a business, there is 8 hours of videos in there from marketing, commercial photography and wedding photography.

I've just Ozbargained it..and cut the prices in half, it's usually $49 for the lot and $15 for individuals, I know you guys like a bargain so its half price $24.50 for the lot and $7.50 for individual videos.

There are 7 videos there but my pick are, Wedding Video, sooner or later you'll have to shoot a wedding and this is a very comprehensive video on how to do it properly.
Commercial photography, great for learning how to do product photography, loads of tips.
Model and fashion photography, a good tutorial on how to do this from start to finish..
      Here is the website

Poohah, any thoughts on the EOS 1100 with 18-55 lens for $496 at Harvey Norman?

    • +1

Has been cheaper http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/58188 $396. For 496 you might as well buy grey stock and get an extra lens

    • +1

At risk of sounding like a broken down record there is a deal for the 550d on Ozbargains for only a little bit more and its a much better camera http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61029

      Here's why
the 550d has, higher resolution screen, larger screen, Full HD movies(this is the deal breaker) sooner or later you will want to shoot movies with is as its so good..
Its also got an external mike, the resolution is almost 70% better, you have the 24p film mode to get that movie look, better image quality, higher dynamic range, self cleaning sensor, lower noise, larger sensor and its shoots faster.
There are other advantages as well but if they are not enough then it's not worth writing the rest..

The only advantage the 1100d has is that its slightly cheaper and the battery lasts longer but as a photographer you should always have an extra battery..

      • +1

        Thanks for that.
I've certainly been eyeing off that deal. I just wanted an informed opinion on whether the extra coin was worth it given most are pushing to spend less on the body and more on the lenses.

        • +1

I'm always of the latter opinion but for an extra $100 you get a lot better deal..

  • +1

Just got my dvd Steve. Thanks!

    • +1

Great stuff, glad it arrived safely..

  • +1

just purchased along with my new 60D, going to Hunter Valley soon, hopefully will improve my skills!

    • +1

Good stuff, its awesome there, I was there last week, don't forget the Muscato at Petersons champagne house..

      • +1

Haha sweet, we're going wine tasting as well!

  • +1

Mine just arrived too, my sis will be happy
    Thanks Steve.

    • +1

      Glad it arrived safely, excellent..

  • +1

anyone know if Nikon e series manual lenses are compatible with Nikon DSLRs? specifically the D70

    • +1

      http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htm
"All Series E lenses are AI-s"

      http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

      So basically no metering support.

      • +1

        Thanks Quarrymaster

meaning the camera wont auto adjust the aperture size?
And you'd have to do it by trying various aperture settings?
will this be a challenging task if you are new to photography?

one of my mates' mates is selling it for $50.. wondering whether it would be waste of money!

    • +2

This is turning into a Photography Forum..

  • +1

poohah im not happy. i waited 4 days for a blank dvd. there is nothing on the disc. i tried it with two different drives and a dvd player.

    • +1

      will send it now, cheers

  • +1

Received the DVD in the post today and have since had a quick look at it and I am impressed…I would have called myself a beginner to intermediate level photographer a couple of years ago but for the last 18 or so months havent used my DSLR due to one reason or another…this DVD bought back all of the learning that I did with the camera and other photography books when I was learning how to shoot…

    • +1

I'm really glad to hear that, hopefully you'll get out shooting this weekend..

  • +1

Got the DVD today! Very excited!!!! ….

    Except ….

It won't load on my Blu-ray player and also my computer!!!!!!! What to do now?

    • +1

shoot me through an email and I'll send you another one out, sorry about that..

  • +1

I bought this on Monday morning and still have not received it? It was being shipped to WA (metro). Was this sent express post? Should of definitely received by now…..

    • +1

Can you shoot me through an email to [email protected]

  • +1

ordered one on wednesday and received the post on friday. turned out to be a blank DVD. going away on monday as well so we won't be able to view this. how unlucky :(

    • +1

I have had a couple of people with the same problem but I have resent them a copy, don't worry I sell in loads of different countries so just let me know where you are and I will arrange a copy for you..cheers

    • +1

Actually if you let me know an address where you are going I can have it waiting there when you arrive, I have distribution through Europe, America and other countries, cheers..

  • +1

I have a Canon S95 and I'd like to start getting away from the Auto mode. Even though it's not an SLR do you think I'll be able to apply the skills in the DVD with this camera?

    • +1

I've heard nothing but good things about this camera, an amazing processor (DIGIC 4) and a F2 lens makes it a good combo. Pretty much all the same controls you have on an SLR will be on your camera, you can also shoot in raw. You will find that almost all the new Hybrids have all the same controls as an SLR. I hope this answers your question.

      • +1

        Hi Poohah,
Have ordered the DVD, but like an eskimo buying a heater for his igloo, I have no suitable camera to learn on.
My main goal is scenery (ie. beachscapes), lightning (storm chasing) and some surfing shots from land.
Budget is a concern (sub $500 ish), should I go DSLR (1100D Canon single lens) or go for the above Canon S95 (cheaper than the 100 and better battery).
Apologies if this is not the forum to pick your brains.

        • +1

I'd actually go for this camera if budget was a concern http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J41T7Q Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera, the quality of the images is great and the video is awesome but and there is a big but, (not butt like Sir Mixalot) a DSLR vs a compact is a different story. The DSLR will win hands down on different types of images you can get and also speed to get them.
I would go for a simple set up of a 550d and a 50mm 1.8 lens..after a while you can then add a 55-250 to expand your range to get the surfing shots. I've answered here in this "Forum" the difference between a 550d and an 1100D, the 550D is a much better option..The DSLR might blow your budget a bit but the shots and high quality video will be worth it..you won't need a camcorder any more so there's a saving..

  • +1

Just bought one, looking forward to receiving it. I have a few books (Understanding Exposure and Scott Kelby's Digital Photography box set) but I think this will be good so I can SEE what to do! I have a 550D and 18-55 kit lens, nifty fifty, Yongnuo flash… oh, and a tripod that my husband bought me so I need to practice on that too! Thanks for great deal Steve :)

    • +1

They are 2 great books but sometimes its easier to learn off a DVD, also you can rewind it if you don't get it, the 550d is a good camera for the money, I don't rate the kit lens but the nifty fifty is good, the Yongnuo flash is good as well, if you get a controller with that you can start some off camera techniques, looks like you are set to go, maybe look at getting the 55-250 lens as well, its inexpensive and gives you some more range, especially for sport. My ideal choice would be a 400 prime but its about 4-5 times the price..

  • +1

AM i correct in seeing that the deal wont end until the end of Jan? gives me time to deliberate :)

  • +1

Just got mine, works great. The content is awesome so far, very easy to understand. The only creative criticism i could offer is the sound design, specifically the voice recording outdoors, if improved the content would appear much more professional. Thanks Steve, will definitely be using these tips soon!

    • +1

That's excellent, I'm glad you are enjoying it and I hope you get stuck into your camera again..

  • +1

    Hello Steven,
I emailed with a specific inquiry but got a 'generic' reply.
Anyways..I ordered and paid on 12th… Has it been posted? I'm in WA so it might slow postage for me.. but just wondering if it had been posted.
    Thanks

    • +1

For sure, I process all orders on the same day I get them, Wa is a bit of a different story, its good at 2 days but usually closer to 4, Aus post don't deliver on the weekends as well, any dramas just email me, cheers..

      • +1

Received it just now thanks. Looks good. :)

        • +1

My faith in Aust post has been restored, it's been wavering of late, they have lost a couple of my orders Hallelujah

  • +1

+1 and bought one last night.
Been an avid photographer but due to having young kids have not got the time to learn the proper skills. I've got a 550D and an EF-S 18-200mm, images have not the spot on 'Canon' colours and they're too contrast. I'm hoping this course will help me fix the issue and improve my composition skill.

    • +1

It might be worth you starting to shoot in Raw and then add the colours how you would like them after, shooting in Raw basicly means what is says on the tin, its a raw image.
When you take a photo normally your camera processes that image inside your camera and spits out a jpeg which you can use to print or email.
When you shoot a raw image the camera doesn't process it, it just records a huge raw file with all the data on it untouched, you then place this into an image editing program and you can spit out the jpeg like you envisioned it, adding clarity, changing the black point, lightening or darkening, increasing the contrast, increasing the vibrancy(giving it those punchy colours you are missing)

You can also do this inside your camera (not as good) by changing your picture styles, increasing or decreasing contrast, sharpening ect..

Start to play around with your picture styles first and then give it a go in shooting in raw..

I always shoot in raw and jpeg, Jpegs are quick and easy but if I get a shot that has promise or needs extra work then I put it into an image editing program and go for it..

So the difference between Jpeg and Raw is time really,

Raw images have come along way over the past few years so its worth shooting in raw for those special occasions as a backup, cheers..

      • +1

        Thanks for the advice.

I take a lot of family/scenery photos with my 2 yo who never stays still so I need to move fast. I'm also too lazy to post-process the images so I don't take RAW. I've been playing around with the picture styles but no luck. I think I haven't spent enough time nailing the correct combination. Blue sky never looks blue enough. I used to have a G6 and I was very happy with the 'Vivid' style. What would be your ideal numbers for family/scenery photos (ie. sharpness, contrast, saturation, color tone)?

I might also take a few RAW shots and explore the settings so I can apply them on the inside camera.
        Cheers.

        • 2 year olds, I have one who is out of control and usually I have to shoot in burst mode to get any decent shots as she doesn't sit still, its like shooting sports or car racing..

Just go to hit the post office and will finish this later, start to try the presets on the camera and then when you find a good one then adjust that until you like it.

Sharpness is obvious, Portraits you want it softer and landscapes sharper
Contrast, this can give a good punchy shot
Saturation is your vivid to increase the colour
Colour tone can be another way push the blues as well..

  • +1

    Sorry, double post.

  • Hi Steve..just ordered one..i stay in Melbourne so i am assuming will get hold of it by tuesday..any idea?

    • +1

I'll post it first thing on Monday and the rest is up to good old reliable Australia post, they are pretty good actually, ETA Tuesday or Wednesday…

      • thanks for the quick response..appreciate that !!

  • Just ordered Looking forward to some slr lessons with the birth of another baby :)

  • +2

You better be careful, if they grow up later and the second baby has these semi pro shots and your first baby has dodgy ones there might be hours in therapy to pay for…

    • lol yeah you might be right there, had a $50 point and shoot for the first baby :( lol. Now have a Canon Kiss x3 (500d)with 18-55 and 75-300 lens and use it like a point and shoot, hence buying your dvd ;)

I read you talking about shooting in raw. What do you believe is the best editing program for a newbie playing around with raw files?

      • Canon provides decent software for free but Photoshop Elements has 90% of what Photoshop has to offer for a fraction of the price so I'd suggest a copy of that, you can download a free trial for 30 days and check it out..

  • Was a bit doubtful in purchasing but decided to do it anyway. Hopefully it will really improve my amateur photography skills. Not yet have a DSLR but I hope it will still be useful for my G12. I hope I can get this soon. Thanks poohah!

    • +1

On its way, I used a Canon G10 on some of the course so you will be fine, cheers, the G12 is a much better camera by the way..

  • Just bought one this arvo. Planning to use my bro's old 10d. Question - does the 10d have any advantages over the 550d at all? Or is the 550d a much better camera?

    • I think with the right lighting and the right conditions you can take great shots on any camera but why make it harder for yourself, the 10d is getting long in the tooth, if you shoot in Raw then you will be able to process it later to get some really good results. I had a 40d which I got rid of years ago and that was a great camera, the 10d,20d and 30d were a long way away from the 40d..
There are almost no advantages over the 550d and where do I start with the 550d
its Full HD Video,it shoots movies, screen resolution is massively better, much higher ISO and many more things but if you are out there on a nice day with good conditions and decent lenses you will still get great shots with the 10D, check this out to see all the differences..
      http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_10D-vs-Canon_EOS_550D

  • hi,

what are your opinions on the Sony nex-5 camera and do you think this DVD would be suitable to help me use it properly ??

    cheers

    • Hi Merriman, my course is universal so the course is relevant, I'm hearing good things about the Sony as long as you can bolt good lenses onto it then great, Sony bought out the Minolta system originally which wasn't amazing but have been adding some good lenses, Ive heard this is a good set up to try.
      Lens 2.8 16-50 and FLT A77

  • Thanks just ordered one.

  • Hi poohah, I have ordered one on 29th jan but still not received in Sydney. As I understand it should be delivered next day.

    • It depends on the time you ordered and how efficient Aust post are going that day, Sydney is usually a day or 2 but some people have had it delivered in 4 days, no idea why, I process all orders on the same day so give it a day, any dramas then contact me directly on [email protected], it will probably turn up in the morning..cheers..

  • Hey Nikon DSLR Owners,

Amazon has a 35mm DX Lens for $199 with $10(ish) shipping. This is cheaper than all of the other lens websites I've seen including shipping).

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001S2PPT0/ref=oh_o00_s00_i…

Due to the crop factor on Nikon DSLRS, this works like a FX 50mm .

    • Yep its definitely turned into a Photography Forum now..

  • REP, are you plan to run this deal again any time soon?
Nikon D90 (1k ish) vs Canon 550D (700ish) both twin kit len. Which one is value for money?
