Are these temps normal for my PC system?

Hi,
I'm getting quite high temperatures on my new PC. I get no less than 37 degrees C on idle (nothing open & desktop only), around 45-50 degrees when web browsing (not much open really, if I have a lot of stuff open it can stay over 50 degrees for some time) and the temperature seems to max out at around 73 degrees C (Cinebench R23 multi core run).

I'm running a 5600X with a Noctua NH-D15, and I'm a little disappointed because a lot of people say this is the best air cooler out now. Do you think these temps are normal? If not, how can I fix them? Also, the PC isn't very quiet either (as I thought it would for a poor thermal PC) - it's around 45 decibels on full load. Some people with similar configurations say their PC is silent even on full load and I feel like I'm nowhere close to them both in terms of thermals and noise.

I'm not doing any manual OC on the processor, however I do have PBO on for the CPU and XMP on for RAM.

Thank you!

Here are my PC specs:
- Ryzen 5 5600x
- Noctua NH-D15
- Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2
- Crucial Ballistix 3600MHz
- RTX 3070 Gigabyte Gaming OC
- WD Blue SN550 1TB
- Fractal Design Define 7 Compact (2x 140mm front, 1x 120mm rear)

EDIT: Here are the temps when I'm playing a game (HW Monitor data):

Take the max temperatures, as it took me a while to screenshot. I was playing Minecraft (the only game I could install quickly after a hard drive wipe..) at 1440p, fabulous graphics, render distance 22. There are weird stutterings here and there even though the framerate average is around 130-140fps but more concerned about the temps.

  • It is within spec. I have noticed that temperature rises more for single core applications rather than multicore (it is un-intutive). To test try to run Prime-95 with 2 threads vs 12 threads (with max heat torture test). If the CPU temp remains below 90C then you are ok.

You have to tune down the cpu/system fan speeds. I have my fan set to 40% all the way up to 80 degrees on 5900x with NH-D15S. Then it linearly ramps up to 100%. It keeps the system very quiet for general use.

    • I have a 5900X paired with NH-D15 (single fan only due to RAM and case restriction of the Pure Base 500DX).

I've already set a pretty agressive fan curve. When in general use with a few applications opened, I get around 47C when idle. But if I open and load a new tab in Chrome, the CPU temp spikes to around 66C for a few secs. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal for the temp to jump on single core speed boost. It is designed that way.

My idle is around 37C. VM + chrome + other apps 50~55C. Fan remains at 40% until 80C.

I tried to add another fan but the difference was only 1~2 degrees.

If I manually set all cores to 4.4G and set the max volt to 1.285V then I have not seen temp climb above 75 degrees (even with torture load). After playing around I left all to default.

My case is Phanteks Hybrid 600S (and both front and top are shut to keep it silent). I can only hear my PSU fan (which obviously needs replacing).

My laptop is louder than my desktop!

  • it's around 45 decibels on full load.

Temp is fine. 45 decibels with a Noctua seems like it's a problem. Are you sure it's the Noctua that's causing the noise and not a case fan/GPU fan?

    • The GPU fan seems a little loud but when the CPU fan RPM goes over around 500RPM it's definitely louder than the GPU fans.

      • That much noise sounds like a problem. I think that's about double the noise of specs.

  • (2x 140mm front, 1x 120mm rear) are more than likely causing your noise problems, especially if they are ramping up to max rpm.

    • I have both on silent mode in the BIOS, and putting my ears near the case the loud sounds are definitely coming from the CPU fan.

Looks normal for this kind of pc case.

  • run a game with hwinfo64 in the background, take a screenshot and upload it. also while in-game record temps of cpu/gpu/m2/vrm
take off front panel and side panel while game is still running and see if temps have dropped by a big margin, if yes your case is the culprit, if no upload hw64 ss here

    • Here it is: https://imgur.com/a/Dg5MWxg
The game I'm playing isn't necessarily demanding in terms of GPU or CPU (Minecraft) yet the temps are still high for the CPU. What's weird is that the GPU stays at around 50 degrees but the CPU goes up to 80 degrees. Playing at 1440p, fabulous graphics at render distance 22.

  • Your pc is going to be a space heater either way so 5-7 fewer degrees on your cpu is not going to make a difference one bit.

  • Fractal Design Define 7 Compact

Have a look at your front panel. There's the problem. You'll drop 5 - 6 degrees easily by switching to a mesh case, e.g. the Meshify 2 Compact.

But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter.

  • I've ran at >80 for 5 years you'll be fine.

  • Everything you posted seems perfectly reasonable. Nothing I would be concerned about to be honest. Yep, there are a few tweaks you could do to improve temps, eg. the case, but it's not necessary because everything is working as it should.

  • did taking front/side panel off drop the temps some? everything else looks good

    • Not really… I didn't notice a tangible difference

  • Try clocktuner for ryzen if you want better cpu optimisation https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/clocktuner-2-for-ryzen-(ctr)-guide,1.html

  • do you live in hotter climate? QLD?
def not normal temps but in saying that those temps are still safe for a pc

i got a new 5600x pc also, also just bought a budget $40 cpu cooler.

    idle temps 31 degrees
    web browsing temp 32-34

running cinebench r20 64 degree max
    gaming temp in 50's
