This deal popped via prino so I went to check it out. Have been cheaper but I think it's pretty good price if you want to get it now.

$198 for the non-pro version

  • For those with a Shield, how well does it function as a Plex server if streaming to multiple devices at the same time? Would be great to allow my old pc to retire from duty.

  • Would you even bother with one if you don't have a 4k tv?

    • Doesn't mean you won't end up with a 4k tv eventually.

    • +1

Yes, I have 4k TV, but rarely watch 4k content. For me the appeal is the speed and fluidity of the interface and running apps. The ability to run as a NAS and or Plex server and an excellent backlit remote.

      • +1

also the A.I. upscale and direct CEC connect to audio receiver is pretty sweet too!

  • Besides gaming why would someone buy this over the Google TV box?

    • +1

Plex server. Bit faster CPU / GPU. Nice remote. USB ports. Based on history will get many years of updates (they are still updating the 2015 model), Google really like to pull the rug out, change product lines like changing clothes

I have both a 2015 and a 2019, although I mostly use the native apps on my 2020 LG … it is very fast tbh

  • +1

I have an older non pro version (2017, I think) the one with optical out and a tiny slim remote with two small flat non rechargable batteries. Works like a clock, plays 4k. I use it as an entertainment centre to play movies and music from an external HDD connected via USB 3.0 and play music.

Why would you want to upgrade though?

    • This is mainly for people who have a full surround sound system and want to get Atmos and DTS-X if they have lots of Blu-Ray rips. There are other boxes that can achieve it but the quality is a lot less and sound output isn't as good as Nvidia Shield. Either this or a 4K Blu-Ray player is the option.

  • Hi guys, does anyone know if the shield pro is better than Apple 4K TV purely for watching Netflix, Disney, Prime, Stan, Foxtel app etc? Concerned of picture quality and sound.

Not interested in plex set ups.

Have a new 85’ Sony 9000h, software is okay but storage space was an issue the other day with Disney update. Can’t find an answer anywhere to this basic question.

Brought the Apple 4K TV when Jbhifi had that pricing error but still in box as the TV hasn’t had an issue, besides storage, with apps….

Also my TV has Apple TV to some extent built in, I can easily just beam a movie from my iPhone on apple movies very easily.

    • +1

its going to be much of a muchness, except for the upscaling on the shield. for most of those things, the source material will be limiting factor
The shield can certainly pass through Atmos sound if your tv supports it.

ive had no issue streaming movies to shield from either iphones or androids, but cant speak to quality as most of mine come direct from my plex or streams.

      • Thanks mate. But are you saying Apple TV passes Atmos as well or doesn’t?

I just want the best movie experience when I’m watching those streaming apps.

For instance is the upscaling something that the shield does that vastly improves the movie quality? Especially with my size TV?

        • +1

I think the AppleTV and the shield are on par audio-wise, and the shield prob has a slight edge in upscaling.
As to whether it's worth it, given you already have the AppleTV, it's a hard call. the size def makes it more relevant, as lower res stuff will look worse on large TVs. my general feel is the upscaling on the shield does a pretty great job. 1080p stuff looks a lot closer to 4k than I expected - it's really very good. I haven't used the AppleTV so i cant compare, but i don't believe it uses the same level of tech.

          • @MercSal: Thanks mate, in that case might just hold onto the Apple TV for a couple of years. By then I’m sure the shield will have a newer version around that is worth making the switch over.

I've got an Apple TV 4K and a 2019 Shield TV Pro and I much prefer the Apple TV for watching content.

    • lol that last part, thats not apple tv m8, thats just support for apple screening

      • How bout some advice on my post since your such a smarty pants ;)

  • Forgive what might be a stupid question but this doesn't do FTA/PVR as well? Is Fetch Mighty the only box that does? Asking for a friend (really).

    • +2

You can run any of the FTA catch up services, but wont natively work as a FTA player or PVR. you can make it do with Plex though, but a fair bit of cost/effort

    • +1

      Nope it doesn't.

  • how does this compare to the fire stick 4k deal? no shit its better. but worth the 2.7x price better?

    • Only if you have an atmos or DTSX setup. Or if you are keen on streaming games from PC.

  • can i plug in my wireless keyboard w/ USB dongle into this thing, and control it with a full keyboard instead of the remote?

    • I'm sure you can.

    • you can

  • Would this be suitable to just pay movies off an external HDD?

I have a Kodi Android box I bought off Ebay but it's not really a very elegant solution.

    • +2

yes it plays off external USB 3 HDD's no problem, either through Kodi, VLC or Plex. 4K is buttery smooth.

      • Thanks.

Will it work out of the box or will I need to install something onto it?

        Appreciate your help.

  • +1

What do people think of the performance of this compared to the fire stick 4K coming soon for $99 if it’s only to be used for media streaming apps and catch up apps?

I saw that you can give handy voice commands to the fire stick to say something like “play stranger things on Netflix” and it does. Or “show me comedies” and I hear it will show comedies across a few platforms at once. That seems cool. And both seem very fast from the couple videos I’ve seen. But hard to compare that

    • i believe SHield is still the most powerful box..

    • You dont need a Nvidia Shield TV if you dont actually have a need such as 4k AI upscale and passthrough audio for your dolby atmos + DTS HD receiver.

If you TV already have an eARC port (not arc) you most probably already have passthrough dolby.

And my recommendation is dont spend $150 extra only for AI upscale. Its neat but doesnt always work with lower res than 1080p. Even with performance, shield pro is a beast. But you dont always need a beast. Chromecast with google TV or 4k fire stick should be enough for you and would cost less than a $100 in an offer.
