  • does this work of gas cylinders or those cans?

    • +2

the included 'hose and regulator' would indicate gas cylinder

      • ok thanks. i hate those cans. But makes u wonder how is it potable if u have to use a big fat gas cylinder

        • +1

You can get the 4kg gas bottles almost anywhere if it's important, 2kg are also readily available. By "portable" I would assume they mean you can easily get it in the back of the car. You're not going hiking with this thing…

  • it says "including hose and regulator" so it's cylinder not can.

Seems they have a magic one in their catalogue photo - cooks without any gas of any sort ;-)

      solar power

  • Shame my nearest store is 388 kilometres away…

    • If you can pay me in advance (inc postage), I am more than happy to send it thru post.

sure many ppl will hate me for this, but unless its either with charcoal/heat beads / wood, i don't see it as a bbq. if its gas, might as well just cook it on a stove!

    • I agree with you, cooking on heat beads/charcoal imparts a unique flavour to the food. I'd just get the disposable bbq trays with heat beads for your picnic.

      • I've never had a good experience cooking on a disposable BBQ (except for entertainment when a friend set fire to the grass in a park in London).

Does anyone know the rules of cooking in a public place on coals vs' gas on a day of fire ban?

    • Perhaps…but I can get my gas BBQ going, cooked and sitting at the table eating in 20 minutes. That's not possible with coal/heat beads, and tastes significantly better than pan frying meat on my stove. It's doesn't have the smokey flavour you're looking for, but for convenience of weeknight outdoor eating it's a good compromise.

    • i have to agree with u. Gas BBQ taste the worst. i rate it this way. Charcoal > Oven > Gas

  • hmmm…i was just thinking about the weber q 100 actually..

While im sure you get what u pay for.. .the price difference is quite significant. (the q100 is around $280)

Apart from price, anyone more knowledgeable about this kind of stuff able to shed a bit of light in terms of what else is different? Or what should I look for in-store to see if it's any good? (seeing as the details on the website are quite sparse)

I've got the weber Q100 (but I wish I got the Q200). The materials and build quality are excellent, but if you're not using it as you primary BBQ then it's too much money - I'd get the Aldi instead.
If you're tossing up between the 2, buy the one from Aldi and put it together. Then head to your local BBQ shop and make a comparison to see what you're missing out on for the additional $130. If you decide the weber is worth the money, then pack up your Aldi version and get a refund.

It's likely that the materials used are much more lightweight on the Aldi, and as such, the heat retention will be less. The Q100 doesn't come with a hot plate (only grill) but you can buy one for an added small fortune. The Q100 is very frugal on gas usage.

    DONT BUY THIS!!!!!

I bought this piece of crap this time last year, worst purchase ever.
I thought it was just going to be a pretty much disposable cooker after a weeklong camping trip. I disposed of it much earlier than that. Completely useless.

Spend a little bit more and get a bbq that will cook your meat in a timely manner. This piece of crap takes 3 or 4 times longer to cook anything. Even simple thin sausages take almost an hour! Plus the picture is misleading…. no way on gods earth can you cook anything near the edges. The only spot that gets hot enough is in the center, and then when you try and make things a little hotter anything in the middle of the thin ass 'plate' will burn to a crisp.

Please dont waste your money, I cant express in words how crap this thing is.

or if price is your ultimate concern, here…. for same price get something like this:

    http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_jumbuck-round-so…

cast iron hotplate so it'll cook things evenly over the whole surface, is portable, is cheap, and will work a hell of a lot better than the above crap from Aldi!

  • I prefer electric grills
