Should I Keep My Two and Half Year Old Note 9 or Go for S21 5G with Trade in Bonus

Hi,

My Note 9 is working smoothly except battery (with normal usage I get till 4pm, if I charge in the morning). Also it is out of warranty. No further OS updates. Other than this everything is fine.

At the same time, with the trade in my mobile, I can get S21 for $364 ($1099-$500-$195-$50). It comes with new software, regular updates for another 2 years, 5g and 2 years warranty.

Earlier to thus I didn't have any plans to upgrade for another couple of months (I was thinking to upgrade to OnePlus 8, costs around $580). However, with trade in bonus Galaxy 21 5G (for $364) is pretty much cheaper ( even compared to new OP8). So, I am looking for your thoughts on "Should I go with upgrade or not?"

I don't play games but I use mobile for photos a lot. However, reviews say that Note 9 camera is still better than S21 5g.

I really appreciate your comments on this thread.

Thanks in advance.

  • There is no sdcard in s21. It will be your issue.

    • 128GB should be fine as I transfer my photos very frequently.
      Thanks.

Keep using note 9 and carry power bank….

    • Just be careful if you get the battery in your phone replaced at one of those kiosks. I cant do the trade up program because my phone now contains a non-genuine part.

For that changeover price I would strongly suggest upgrading.
Your battery is likely to lose more life in the next 6 months and be a hassle.
Note 9 good phone but will continue to rapidly depreciate.

S21 has excellent camera, if you learn how to use it (just YouTube the camera reviews).
Screen is fabulous, has 120Hz smooth scrolling.
    Excellent performance.

Drop in to a Samsung store or JB Hifiv and have a play with one.

Yes, no stylus… but pros outweigh cons.

Should I keep my two and half year old

Came here thinking if you were talking about your kid… 😐

  • I would totally upgrade. But I would go for a s21+ for the extra battery life.

  • Other than this everything is fine.

Why not just get a new battery if you need?

    • See previous comment above about getting battery replaced and phone now has a non-genuine part in it.

      • It's already out of warranty so why should that matter as long as the part is for purpose?

        • You get excluded from the Samsung trade up program.

          • @nedski: Ok. If that's important for OP then the non-genuine part is automatically not fit for purpose.

I see many people keep on top of the latest with their phone. Personally, a phone gets used till it dies or otherwise stops providing adequate utility. I'd still get a new battery.

@nedski: Don't think they take Note 9 anymore for trade in.

I don't think the Note 9 qualifies for the bonus $500 trade-in credit.

    • Of course it does

      • Ah yea, I check the trade in website and because I typed "Note 9" instead of "Note9" is why it didn't come up.

  • I have the exact same phone and was hopeful when saw your post, that I'd be able to get the s21 ultra with the $500 discount, but no dice. It's only for the s21.
Would anyone know of good prices for the ultra? Bonus points for places selling the snapdragon version with solid warranty.

    Thanks!

    • The $500 trade in bonus is definitely for the whole s21 range, including the Ultra. Get a $200 voucher from the loyalty chat and a $50 newsletter voucher and you've got yourself a cheap phone.

  • Replaced my Note 9 with the Note 20 Ultra.
The camera is certainly a great upgrade, but the rest of the system is a disappointment, especially the under screen fingerprint scanner. Slow and inaccurate.
I had a screen fault 4 months before warranty expired on the Note 9, They replaced basically the whole phone. Covers, bumpers, screen and battery. It was virtually brand new. Constantly consider returning to it.

Scan your thumb as a few different fingers. The scanner did get better for me after a few days. Maybe I just got used to how to press it correctly. It did frustrate me to begin with but fine now. I came from a S9.

  • Finally I purchased S21 5g 128gb for $154 ($1099-$500-$195-$200-$50).

Thanks everyone for your comments here.

    • Bargain of the year. Well done!
One thing I hope you realise is that the S21 display is much smaller than the Note 9.

    • $154 ($1099-$500-$195-$200-$50).

How did it come to this?

Edit: Nvm, I saw the other thread.
