When Will GPU Prices Drop Back to Normal?

Do you think the prices will come down sometime this year? PSUs and CPUs have somewhat returned close to normal, but GPU prices just seems to be ever increasing.

Should've used your crystal ball to foresee this issue and buy more eneloops.

Depends how many are in the suez canal right now

    • Hahaha surely GPUs get shipped out from China or Taiwan to the destination countries? I can’t imagine how a ship in the Suez Canal would have a ton of GPUs from China on board

You wouldn't believe how much canned foods travel around the world to reach Australia. Distance wise it doesn't make any sense at all, but money wise someone is saving shitloads by gaming the system.

It's not just that one cargo ship.

It's also the hundreds more that are blocked by it.

  • April 1st my crystal ball says.

If you haven't gotten the gist yet, noone knows.

There's both supply side problem (general silicon wafer shortage) and demand problem (mining).
If you need a GPU I'd get one now regardless and do some side mining to make up for it.
If you don't need it just be prepared to sit out this generation.

Certainly not 2021. Mid-2022 maybe earliest.

    • I was going to say in 2019, but then the pandemic happened…
Then was gonna say in 2020, but then supply shortage happened…
Lastly was about to say in 2021, but then the crypto boom happened…
Now all I can say is that it is Q3 2022 at the earliest, but then the …

    Two years.

We are in a bit of a bubble, where tech employees can earn great coin but it is dangerous for their neglected spouses to cheat as rents are stupidly high and competitive. Once everything has settled and there are value rental available, neglected tech spouses will get it on for young and old. This will consume a significant portion of our highest earners incomes, stopping frivolous spending like that on graphics cards.

This, and only this, will ease prices. Computer stores will fight tooth and nail to keep the margins they have secured. Over inventory due to disposable income consumed by legal council is the only way to bring it back down. /s
