Are Couriers Getting Lazy (Amazon)

Since COVID started, I have noticed that couriers have been adopting a 'drop and run' policy.

Even when people are home, they will just leave a parcel and say nothing, rather than letting the people know there is a parcel.

Large Amazon parcel left out the front of garage door this morning.

On the delivery label, there was a note of "Special Instructions: Leave In A Safe Place". I did not give those instructions, so assuming this is just the general policy on all items since COVID. Surely the intent of this message is to do so if no one is home??

I would mention this to Amazon if I thought it would make a difference.

  • Depends on the courier person themselves. You can say this for any company.

  • I don't believe Amazon have an option to send the parcel back to the depot. (Please correct me if I am wrong?)

Amazon for me have been 100% effective when it comes to delivery drops. I would be more worried about a parcel from Aus Post that was delivered when the instructions were to take it to the post office.

Amazon don't need to have a return to depot option if there are people at home.

The point I am trying to make is that if the people are at home, they should be notified that a parcel has arrived for them…. maybe by even knocking on the door.

      • They almost always knock on my door when leaving the parcel, for small items they leave in my postbox and i get a pretty speedy notification so I know to go collect it if it is something of value.

      • Ohhhh I get you!
Yeah that is a valid point. There are times I receive the notification its been delivered but no door bell. Totally get your point. They should be door knocking or pressing that bell.

You can absolutely refuse delivery and they'll send it back and get refunded within couple days. Not sure if there's a limit to how many times you can do that on account.

If you cannot deliver a courier, then you have to return to Amazon depot the same day until a certain 10 PM I believe or next day morning.

Edit - I mean the courier person making the delivery.

I wonder what happens if an item left out the front of the house gets stolen in this situation?

    • +4

You contact Amazon to say item not delivered and they'll refund or send you another. Easy.

"Leave In A Safe Place" is the default delivery option. You can change this in your account settings.

    • I'm an Amazon seller. You can reach to the Amazon AU they will get back to you, don't worry.

It’s probably the pay rate, or required parcel delivery rate they are getting from amazon. Not enough $ or not enough tome to do the job properly.

  • I like Amazon delivery. Sometimes they leave in a safe place, but always come up my entrance which takes extra work.

Id think it sensible their system would evaluate risk (item value, customer history), and seek proper verification of delivery when required.

  • I'd say this is a isolated incident. Do you get other Amazon packages or is this your only one that you've received from them?

All my Amazon packages, small and large, get left at my door after an attempted contact by the person. I have security cameras so can see they've tried to contact at the door.

  • Most, perhaps all couriers, and Aust Post have had a no contact delivery policy from about mid last year so they'll no longer knock and wait for you to answer the door. I've still had the odd one do that but the vast majority just drop the parcel at the door and go. Occasionally one will knock but still not wait for you to answer. The leave in safe place thing I think is standard as I've had it on most parcels.

I had one parcel go missing that was delivered as a photo of it on the door step was taken so I'm guessing they either picked it back up after taking the photo or the next courier to come along took it. Amazon provided a refund even with the photo showing it was delivered which I thought was pretty good service

Mine ring the doorbell and leave the parcel on the doorstep (Amazon, AusPost, Aramex, DHL)

    my courier…. "YEEET!"

  • I usually have my Amazon parcels delivered to work. Barring one occasion when the parcel went missing cos they claimed to have delivered after hours (that same order then went missing with AusPost when they sent out a replacement LOL), every other time they've brought it into the office or called if there was no access.

  • It is the fact that they moved to using Aramex (fastway) for a lot of their deliveries. I noticed the switch too when my delivery driver stopped knocking a few months ago. Do like I did and register a complaint and request an alternative delivery provider used for your account, all you can do really. I recently went and checked my door because I heard the truck pull up and caught the guy filling out the SWMY card without even knocking.

I get notified pretty quickly when they've made their delivery so i can go pick it up from the door,
They'll usually ring the bell too

"Since COVID started, I have noticed that couriers have been adopting a 'drop and run' policy."

… and right there is the reason why.
All couries do it now to reduce contact with others because of COVID. They usually drop it in the safest place and take a photo for proof of delivery.

  • I had a parcel from Amazon get delivered before Christmas.

I heard someone walking on the front porch and saw through the window that they threw a parcel from waist height onto the front doormat. They just left after that. No ringing the doorbell.

I wasn't impressed. I was lucky it was a nintendo game parcel and it didn't have any moving parts.

  • Normal

  • I'm glad Amazon don't knock or ring. I don't like disruptions. Alexa makes a sound when something is delivered and I think it can even say what's delivered. During my break, I check the front door. Australia Post always rings and knocks, even when it can be left unattended. Very annoying.

  • I live in St Kilda and have had multiple Amazon parcels go missing over the last 12 months due exactly to this. In the past they used to leave it at the local AusPost for me to collect if I wasn't home but lately they have just left them at the main entrance door to my apartment building on a busy road nearby to an area that considered very theft prone. Tried raising it with amazon, who in fairness to them arrange another delivery of item but they don't seem to care that this is happening as it continues to happen.

    • When I lived in St Kilda Road all apartment deliveries were left at the local P.O., otherwise the professional thieves in the area would've had a field day after they had finished going through the letter boxes. Even CCTV and security doors didn't stop them as they would just wait for someone else to let them in to the foyer. Do Amazon deliver to Australia Post parcel lockers?

I get both the Amazon app notification as well as email notification usually within minutes of delivery. Parcel is often left next to front door which is OK by me as they don't have time to waste waiting for every customer to answer the door bell.

  • You're lucky getting Amazon parcels via courier. Most of my Amazon items still come via AuPost which do not deliver parcels to my address so I have to go to the post office to collect them. I live in a pretty safe area and would love my parcels to be dropped on my doorstep to save the hassle of a 1 hr return trip to collect them. I have only had a courier (Aramex) deliver an Amazon parcel twice out of the many items ordered over the past 12 months. It would be good to see before placing the order who the carrier was. I would order more items if I could get them via courier.

  • You can actually set up a delivery instruction in your account. I asked for a phone call prior to any delivery and if not home to redeliver another day. Never got an issue doing that. Instructions are clearly written on my account. No safe place to leave it. I ve got so many stolen from my porch in the past.

  • I have the drop and runs occur all the time.
I just keep a close watch on all my tracking info and on the day I expect delivery, I watch my front porch like a hawk. Had a parcel the other week delivered to a neighbour a few doors down. Despite the fact my house number is pretty much up in blazing lights. Luckily I was watching my emails, saw the “delivered” email and took a walk down the street and spotted it on their porch. They are a bit dodgy so probably would have stolen it. It was a bloody expensive item too.

  • I can no longer get parcels delivered for this very reason. All couriers and Aus Post have done this to me, they dump it and don’t bother ringing my doorbell. I live in an apartment building, there is no “safe place”. I had six parcels stolen before I decided to no longer get deliveries. It’s sucks. I was home every single time and they didn’t knock or ring bell. One time I saw the notification and went straight to the door and it was gone. Photos were taken and they were left at my door, so obviously some (profanity)/s is seeing the drivers and pinching them within minutes. So annoyed.

See if there's a parcel locker near home/work/commute that you can use to deliver items to: https://auspost.com.au/receiving/alternative-delivery-addres…

      • That’s what I do now. I don’t drive though, so what I buy is limited. I can’t buy anything heavy or large as it’s about a 40 min walk and then I have to bring it up to the 3rd floor. Bloody thieves!
