2.5" USB powered Hard Drive

Hi,

I'm looking for a 2.5" USB powered 1TB HDD. Would prefer one with USB3.

Was looking at Samsung S2 1TB for around $120, is that a good price?

Than I saw Seagate 1.5Tb for $129 from dick smith. Is it any good?

  • I would definitely hold out for USB3.0, I grabbed one of the $35 3.5" Verbatims from Staples a while back…it really is anywhere from 4-10x faster than USB2.0 in real world terms at any given time when attached to a USB3.0 port!

I also have a Samsung S2 & WD Passport 2.5", I can't fault either of them. I also have an Astone 2.5" case with a 500GB WD drive in it which works fine after a significantly longer detection time every time it is connected - to any PC. I have a friend with a Seagate 1TB Expansion Portable, I've not heard her complain about it, so it must be ok! ;)

I would hold out for sub-$100 prices if you want 1TB though, I feel we're going to see a drop in prices as Thailand gets back on it's feet; and also as manufacturers will need to shift the glut of stock that would have accumulated whilst people were holding off on buying due to price rises! I'm no market analyst, but that would be my suspicion…hell, it's what I've been doing! ;)
