  • Look for some outgoing 2020 Samsung floor stock, I got the Q900T for $550

Is a $550 sound bar really worth it though? Would you say it’s brought a noticeable difference to your tv viewing experience?

Depends what you're comparing to, and your personal situation. I have 2x Krix Equinox that were serving me well, however it would be thousands to do them justice in a 5.1 upgrade, let alone anything more immersive than that.

For $550 I added my highest priority missing channels (sub, center), as well as making the jump from 2.0 all the way to 9.1.4. Add in Q-symphony for enhanced atmos height, built in Alexa, and all lossless formats I desire via eARC (Atmos, TrueHD, DTS-HD MA) and I've got a pretty neat package

I was sold on the Q900T before even hearing it due to Rtings and other's reported frequency response and general positive test experiences.

Samsung, Bose and JBL have R&D'd the crap out of soundbars the last few years, and now the higher end systems hold up pretty well against audiophile grade systems - keeping in mind the immersion is simulated / bounced off the walls, so it's not true surround.

You would be surprised how close it gets in the right room - you won't know the difference when watching something immersive.

  • Well I just got a TU8000 and paired it with a Samsung T550 for $188. It’s a great step up from the tv speaker and it makes the spoken voices crystal clear but it’s not gonna blow any socks off in terms of amazing sound.

    • Where did you manage to get a T550 for $188?

      • ebay Afterpay 20% off promotion with Appliances Online.

      • Got mine good guys $196. Good step up from tv speakers.

        • It was $186 after a $10 generic coupon @ eBay TGG and the listing got removed one or two days later.

Middle point in your price range is the very popular and bang for buck Yamaha ATS-1060.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/yamaha-ats-1060

This soundbar will improve on your TV's sound greatly, but it's fairly limited in comparison to what more expensive $500+ sound bars can provide.
The ATS-1060 has decent bass without needing a subwoofer.. But it's definately NOT subwoofer like bass.

I have the ATS-1060 in my bedroom attached to a wall mounted 50" TV…. It's good for this, and heaps better than the TV speakers
In my living room I have a 7.1 Bowers and Wilkins speaker + Yamaha Aventage AVR connected to a 55" Sony… This setup blows away my bedroom setup! But it also cost me close to $15K, 10years ago… probably time I upgraded to an Atmos Surround AVR and buy a few more speakers!

If all you care for is a bit better clarify from stereo TV audio.. then go something like the Yamaha ATS-1060.
If you want surround sound, go for a $500+ sound bar.
If you want Atmost Surround sound, go for an even more expensive sound bar… and be sure your TV and Soundbar both support eARC.

  • I got this one a while back (Yamaha YAS109G - $179 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543704)

At first I was a bit iffy at buying a soundbar as I felt the tv sound was okay (Kogan Smart TV), but its like night and day difference for me now. I imagine the Kogan Smart TV speaker may not be the best though so I don't know about your TV (sounds better?), and it looks like there's better soundbars at slightly higher price (ATS-1090B https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/572982)? But I can definitely say I'm soo happy I got one, sound is soo much better, especially in video games I hear the voices a lot better now as well and music sounds good on it. It took me a little setting up to get it right though as it felt muffly before I changed the settings to be more clear, but that may be me.

DO you really need a sound bar?

    I would recommend this. Edifier 2.1 - S350DB

    Here is a colourful review.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH_-JqaAsOA

    • Yeah, any edifier will absolutely crush most soundbars in quality (especially cheap ones).

If you don't need a sub, just get the R1280DBs.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Edifier-R1280DBs-Bluetooth-Bookshe…

Or the R1700BTs (cheaper with no optical or coax if you're fine with using rca).

    • Great speakers, however one of the main reasons I'd go soundbar is ARC. I don't want to sit with 2 different remotes.

  • A deal you missed out today. Best price ever for $99, normally $205.

Don't people just get an amp and get speakers to listen to the TV anymore?
That is the way I always listen to the TV.
I have Polk S60's at the front & Definitive Technology BP 2006 at the rear, this time around :)

    • For me, I don't have space. It was soundbar or nothing.

      • Got room in the corner of the room? Not on the floor, look up.
I have hung speakers with ocky straps from the ceiling.
In one place, it was a mud brick house, I had room to put full size speakers across the beams in the roof part :)
        Let there be rock :p
