  • wow what a deal, paid $190 a few months back for the omne air spin, good helmet

  • What sizes do they come in

    • +3

I've put the available sizes in the post but it's best to click through them to check:)

    • Sizes are mentioned in the links.

    • Literally says it in the post.

  • +3

$399 for a helmet????!!!!! Is it 20x better protection than the $20 ones?

    • Depends if they all meet the AU Standards or not.. which they will.
Also depends how trendy you wanna look.

    • +8

Not at all, just like almost every other product in the world, you have diminishing returns. Actually there's little difference in protection between a $300+ helmet and the cheapest (but legal) helmet apart from some marginally additional protection provided by the MIPS technology on the expensive ones. But you are paying for weight, comfort and aesthetics, although the latter 2 will vary from person to person:P

      • so it is significant lighter than $20 one?

    • +4

Same to cars, fashion, cosmetics, headphones, food, wine. You don't UNDERSTAND because you're not into that field.

      • Dunning Kruger at it again!

  • +11

I know nothing about bikes or their helmets but these look pretty cool. In saying that though.. I'd want to get a helmet to protect my $399 helmet.

    • Nah, you don't wanna risk damaging it. I keep mine in the pool room cabinet.

  • -2

Wahhh … how much money do I need to spend for a helmet? Sounds expensive to me (even at deal prices) …

    • +3

People that wear these helmets typically are riding bikes that are $4k at the cheapest.

    • +1

Kmart has helmets from $5 that meet the Australian standard.

As someone who rides most days I want a helmet that is light weight, fits well and has good ventilation. I usually buy from sales like these and I'm prepared to pay around $100.

  • If I had to pick one based on comfort/value/looks in that order which one would it be? any suggestions fellow OZB'ers?

    • +4

highly recommend buying one from a store to try. Not all helmets fit the same, they are based on different shaped heads and head sizes. Lazer + Kask are two brands I know that suit a more spherical shaped head, while specialized and giro do a more ovaloid head shape. Found this out the hard way.

It's great to get a bargain, but I'd rather pay full price for a helmet that fit, than a bargain for one that didn't.

      • +4

great advice but i already bought the POC one. i'm sure my head will mould into the shape of my bargain helmet.

        • POC have good harnesses which can assist fitment. I have a rounder head and they have fit me, but I've never bought one tho cos $$$ and the severe mushroom head look they sometimes have! Hopefully yours will fit well.

      • +1

Woah.. i wonder if that's why my Mojito X always fit a bit funny but my new Specialized Echelon fits like a glove

      • +1

Agreed with this. With my round head, Bell and Lazer fit great and I have one of each but even x-large Giro pinch the sides of the head and yet want to tip back and forth on the front and back.
Depends what you ride, long distance or commuting etc. Comfort is the major criteria for me. My Bell is not the lightest but is much lighter than my Lazer helmet. On long weekend rides, it is amazing: light, lots of ventilation and drains sweat well. The Lazer is heavier but great with its built in light and I also put another light in it and it fits perfectly. I wear that for commutes to work.

      • +1

Thanks. I guess that explains why I've never been happy with my Kask.

        • I love the harnesses with kask, and they've fit me really well. But I've since left them for Lazer, for now. My sense is that Kask focus on light weight and while they meet the Australian standard, there's so little meat on the bones that I wondered whether there were better options for safety. I managed to crack one Kask helmet with a headon collision with another cyclist (who ventured on the wrong side of the path) and which potentially saved me from more serious injury, but I also managed to crack a kask with day to day handling. Which was a bit inexplicable.

  • Got a Lumos helmet with turn lights, best thing ever.

      • +11

"Haha, I sure pissed off that guy in a two ton death machine behind me!"

Yeah, not a game I'm playing. I don't indicate to be polite, I indicate because I like my limbs. Why is this a fight you'd want?

        • +2

I'm all about my limbs. Always make sure to give drivers a big thumbs up if I see that they hold off cutting across the bike lane to get into a left turn lane as I'm coming up behind them. Too many assholes on the road to add to the numbers

          • +1

@DeToxin: For sure, an arms race of hate between cyclists and drivers is not one I want to support, especially considering I'm on the 'please dont shoot me' side of the deal.

        • -3

most aren't going to get out of their car to do anything (and that's when they are at their weakest point, if they try to ram you, hide behind a tree or nearest stobie pole - use the environment against them). the worst i've had is a Kevin pull up beside me to tell me i failed to indicate (he was 50m away and it made no difference to his or my safety as i cut across the road to get to the right turning lane). Kev illegally stopped to give me his rant as well. i also couldn't do a head check and take a hand off the bars otherwise i could have crashed so there's that (sometimes it's not even safe to indicate)

i just told him to get a dashcam and upload it to facebook. he drove off. i bet he was proud of himself that day! hE sUrE ToLd mE!

(most incidents are caused by drivers at fault anyway, and very rarely are they a result of road rage)

i do have a nice video of a Karen angrily waving her hands in the air and beeping her horn when i turned left and i held her up by about one whole second (even though i was going so slow and hugging the kerb it was blatantly obvious i was turning).

it's really amazing how many drivers are so full of rage, or quickly get to full rage levels when they drive and the most minor thing happens in front of them. i've heard people screaming at themselves (window down) at intersections because the traffic is going 'too slow'. i just saw it again today actually. was a female passenger obviously on meth screaming at the driver in front because they were taking too long at the stop sign.

          can't stop laughing really.

Why is this a fight you'd want?

because you get fights even when you don't ask for it. even if i'm an arm waving bell ringing hi-viz wearing model cyclist - it really does nothing to change the perception among the feral people of this country (and many others). you think if 100% of cyclist obeyed laws 100% of the time we wouldn't be hated? ha! not going to happen. i notice it's actually the lycra that triggers people more than anything and based on confrontations on shared paths it's usually the pedestrians at fault and when they realise they are at fault they quickly look to shift the blame on to you (dog not under effective control, you were going too fast etc.)

      • -1

@cynicalmike: This is exactly why bike riding in Australia has such a bad image. Of course you need to worry when you turn left. I might be the car behind you and just wait until you turned instead of going on the other lane and block more traffic. Also think about a pedestrian wanting to cross … when you don't indicate they might cross instead of waiting.

I miss the leisurely bike riding from Europe … cars watch you and bikes don't race like mad …

        • bike riding in Australia has a bad image because Australia has a lot of feral (profanity) psychopaths.

if you're following me and i'm going to turn left from the bike lane and i don't indicate it simply doesn't inconvenience you in any way. if there's no bike lane it still doesn't matter because chances are the lane is that narrow you can't overtake me in the same lane (safely) anyway.

changing lanes might not even be possible and could even distract you and have you run up behind me because some drivers can't even check their mirrors safely, or stare at it for too long and forget what's happening up front.

          • @cynicalmike: cynicalmike, every time you do something that irritates a motorist you contribute to the next road rage incident. Next time I see a cyclist run a red light I'll think of them, and you, helping to get another cyclist killed.

            • -1

@Gordon61B: nice one Gordon. I didn't say i run red lights (because I don't). although i could, because cyclists have increased visibility and increased collision avoidance (some US states allow this)

if you think that it's reasonable for a motorist to drive with such anger based on previous encounters with cyclists, pedestrians, horses or anything for that matter then you're not a reasonable person and you're exactly the problem.

and i'll just say that these people that do this (hold a grudge of a particular demographic based on previous encounters (it's similar to racism)) and allow this kind of thing to affect their driving and how they treat others should be locked up in a prison or mental institution - they simply don't belong in society.

if only pedestrians and motorists had the same level of hate directed at them for all their misgivings then maybe there'd be some progress in lowering the death toll.

but they don't wear lycra do they?

              • -1

@cynicalmike: Where exactly did I say it was reasonable for a motorist to drive with such anger?

There's nothing reasonable about provoking fragile, crazy motorists who already hate cyclists.

They exist, whether you like it or not. Why would you ride in a way that might aggravate them, unless you want to get one of us killed?

                • -2

                  @Gordon61B:

Where exactly did I say it was reasonable for a motorist to drive with such anger?

by effectively apportioning blame to me for a hypothetical on an actual murder.

(and of course you went on to talking about red lights - the same garbage spewed by ferals on newscorp articles and facebook groups)

unless you want to get one of us killed?

                  so you're a cyclist now?

i also exist whether you like it or not and i ride in whatever way keeps me safe. sometimes that is not indicating because it is not safe to do so and sometimes i don't ring a bell (hint: i don't have one) because it's far better to judge what people are doing rather than worry about stupid bells and horns (which i have used before and make very little difference).

                • +1

@Gordon61B: This is getting dangerously close to victim blaming.

              • +3

@cynicalmike: Really not sure how you came to this way of thinking but it made me think about whether I indicate left when turning left in a bike lane, and I do.

Not indicating if you can is just plain stupid. You're on the road with cars and like it or not, there are going to be drivers who are idiots and drivers who aren't. The problem is that in a crash, you're always going to end up worse off.

You can't make everyone else a good driver but you can be a good cyclist. I would never ride through a red light and your comment about US laws allowing it in some states just sounds out of touch.

You need to ride with the expectation that the next driver passing you could be an absolute idiot and you can only control your own actions to prevent a major accident.

                • -2

@DeToxin: not sure if you actually ride any significant amount but yeah, turning left doesn't usually need indicating. if i don't indicate and i'm going straight is it going to stop an aggressive driver still trying to cut across me because they want to shave a few seconds of their trip?

if i turn left and a drive comes up behind in the few seconds i'm about to turn left how does it affect them? we're talking mere seconds and this is where the rage comes in. i feel like i need to load up MS PAINT to explain it but can't be bothered.

i indicate only when my safety comes into play. and that's why i've never had a serious run in with a car (minor incidents were 100% the fault of driver - one of them was…you guessed it! cutting across to get into a petrol station when i was going straight). the other was also failing to give way at me going straight - how am i supposed to indicate that i'm going straight? smoke signal?

You need to ride with the expectation that the next driver passing you could be an absolute idiot

i do, and that's why i do whatever is needed to keep myself safe. sometimes that involves claiming the lane and riding RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the road entering roundabouts because it makes me more visible and stops them from squeezing me into the kerb.

it also means i sometimes don't indicate because taking one of my hands off the bars can get me wonky and collapse on the road where they will surely have a good laugh or run me over. i stay upright at all times because if an aggressive driver looks like he wants to find an excuse to run me over i can dart off the road or bunny hop over the kerb - they can't. i never trust drivers to give way at the sight of my hand extended because a lot of the time they don't. they sure respond to the middle finger though!

i genuinely roll my eyes up at cyclists that don't understand where the real problems lie - and it's not insignificant things like this, insignificant CBD red light running and insignificant turn indications. it's aggressive drivers and lack of infrastructure forcing US to share with THEM.

most people are mistaken to think it's about 'respect' - it's not.

it's about avoiding the feral bogans that hate you because you're fitter, slimmer and sexier in lycra. they usually drive Holdents.

                  • +3

@cynicalmike: Well I ride about 30k a day, from Pascoe Vale South through Melbourne CBD to St Kilda Rd and back.

You're missing the point but whatever. I hope you stay safe 🧘‍♂️

                    • @DeToxin: i know what point you're making but it's very much the whole victim blaming argument a lot of cyclists actually adopt as well.

for some reason because we don't always exhibit model behaviour (for various reasons many of which i don't agree with) we all need to be tarnished with the same brush. if only peds were registered and motorists had the same levels of hatred for their failures!

it will never change and i won't waste my time believing it will ever change in this country so now i don't care.

                      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idaho_stop

                      • -1

@cynicalmike: I think it is very selfish to only think about your safety.

Another perspective: A child might see you not indicating and think it's ok to do so on his next ride. Is it too much to ask to indicate?

You might not see everything and impact someone with your refusal to indicate. Sorry. But for me this is exactly the issue why bike riding has such a bad image.

                        • -1

@mini_wombat: frankly, i really don't give a shit about other people.

reminds me of the time i went through a red man on a ped crossing of a major road along a major bike route (i always do this when its safe and clear) and there was an asian kid and his mummy standing on the other side, the kid looked up at his mum with a confused look on his face. oh well, it's up to the parent of that child to tell them between right and wrong not some random stranger. if as a parent you're expecting random strangers to be role models you're failing as a parent.

bike riding has a bad image because it's singled out as a means of transportation that allegedly has a 'majority' of lawless people that deserve the highest level of punishment for the most insignificant misdemeanour. does motoring have such a bad image? nope, it's celebrated because even with the thousand plus deaths every year (which is basically nothing compared to some countries) and god knows how many "accidents" in an otherwise near perfect traffic system the 1% of transport users are considered the most evil of them all!

i think you have that bias too, and that's why you posted again in this days old thread.

virtually every day i have motorists doing far worse to me than i'm describing whilst riding normally and 'expecting' them to do the right thing but they don't - and i have to take evasive action to keep myself safe.

so please spare me your bullshit again.

                  • +2

                    @cynicalmike:

sometimes that involves claiming the lane and riding RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the road entering roundabouts because it makes me more visible and stops them from squeezing me into the kerb.

this actually recommended by the Bicycle Network: https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/tips-resources/know-how/ri…

i've experienced this myself….late night riding home down a residential street. i'm going 20kph and a car's been following me for a few hundred metres. no reason why they couldn't overtake me but they wait until we come to a 'traffic calming' chicane with a solid median, and they decide to charge up alongside me, causing both of us to hit the brakes, and they squeezed past leaving less than the required 1m. sure enough, p-plater. don't they teach these kids how to overtake safely? i had another p-plater so confounded by my presence on a 2-lane 60kph street she didn't realise she could use the other lane to overtake until looked back at her and waved her past. some people aren't feral and anti-cyclist — they're just stupid and/or lack confidence in driving.

it also means i sometimes don't indicate because taking one of my hands off the bars can get me wonky and collapse on the road

lol omg this happened to me once when i was trying to do the right thing and indicate left after coming down a steep road. didn't quite endo, but lifted my rear wheel and, being a heavy af ebike, lost control when it landed back on the ground and fell to the side. i didn't fall but suffice it to say that a pringle is more true than my wheel and i can't use the rear brakes effectively any more :\ tl;dr i never indicate going downhill any more because my balance just isn't adequate

  • But they are not easy to mount a GoPro, so that's a fail ;p

    • +4

It's a bad idea to mount a GoPro on your helmet.

I would know, as I used to do it.

I would recommend mounting it to the handlebar (front view) or seatpost (rear view).

      • or chest mount

  • +3

before people jump on this i can say that sometimes pushy's have a 12% or 15% sitewide discount code come up a few days or weeks later and these products are still on sale. i've been burnt by this before so now i just wait unless it's something i really want or i know it's going to be excluded.

    • You're being cynical, Mike.

    • There was a 12% off sale ended yesterday (or today?) but yeah who knows when is the next one..

      • Still, a $350 > $119.99 discount for POC Ventral Air SPIN as an eg is better than 10-12%. Wouldn't be surprised if it stocks out.

Keep sharing the % discounts though! I'm trying to find a bike shop that sells a Basil Buddy (rrp $250) + Basil Buddy Spaceframe (rrp $50) with a discount…

      • +1

I just had a look for a working 12% and couldn't find one. I tried:

        EASTER12
        SITE12
        FINAL12

I'm gonna leave this for a night and see how I feel in the morning; please let me know if you work one out.

        • Haven't tried it, but a mate told me easter21 is active

          • +1

@ktastrphe: Just tried, didn't work for me. Maybe not compatible with these items.

  • +7

Pushys is on eBay and I got a TSAVE20 coupon which gave me $10 off

    • +1

Great heads up - I just found mine for $10 off as well.

TSAVE20 didnt work, but PLUSSS1 did.

    • Also on catch. If you have those 15% gift cards…

    • thank you! you saved me another $10 off!

  • POC Omne Air SPIN Road Helmet Uranium Black/Kalkopyrit Blue Matte Medium is now sold out.

  • I paid $300 for that Green POC helmet about 6 months ago :(

    • +1

Can I ask how you feel about it? I know almost nothing about helmets, but it seems like a great deal.

I mostly do road and path commuting to and from work/uni.

      • I have had many brands before. POC Ventral Air SPIN has been my favourite so far. Love that helmet. Light and comfortable.

  • +2

Like lots of things in cycling, it can get real expensive real quick.

I do all my riding on the open road so if I'm going to get clipped by a truck or car that's going 100km/h, I'd rather a $150-300 helmet with more advanced protective elements protecting my soft lizard brain than some cheap $30 thing.

Cheaper helmets cater for different riders than those spending big dollars. No point buying a fancy aero racing helmet if you're riding to the shops. Weigh up what you need your helmet to do for you and then go from there!

    • +2

Nothing's going to save you from a car going 100km/h.

    • +1

A more expensive helmet isn't really giving your more advanced protective elements. It's just shaving off enough weight as possible to meet the relevant Australian standard. The extra cost goes towards creating a helmet that is as light as can be.

If anything, some of the cheaper, heavier helmets which meet the Australian standard could be safer than a more expensive helmet - the added bulk adds marginally more impact absorption, which is at the cost of added bulk, less airflow, less comfort.

      • All the best then.

      • +4

A heavier helmet may not necessarily be safer as it is a greater mass that can put a larger moment force on the neck and spine in an impact. It also depends on the kind of impact, direct maybe thicker and heavier is better but rotational forces not necessarily. That's why models now have MIPS technology where the outer shell can rotate slightly on the inner skeleton that is latched to your head so that if you strike on an angle, the outer shell will rotate and take some of the forces of the impact from being directly transferred to your head, neck etc.

        • Yes agree. Although I wasn't suggesting greater weight is a virtue. More that if you have a greater amount of foam padding that would be safer, but of course a greater amount of padding will result in greater weight, which is of course a draw back. So it's possible a 350g bargain helmet might have greater impact absorption due to the greater amount of materials, than a 220g high end helmet, which meets standards but shaves off the foam to shave off the weight. Is a 100gram difference in weight a significant factor in a collision? I'm no scientist so I don't know. The testing that I've read about wouldn't seem to be able to discern the differences in those kind of weight differences tho.

The Virginia Tech tests put some of the cheapies up the highest…not kmart jobs, but the entry level specialized, for example.

          https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

I'm not against high end $500 helmets mind you. I just don't think people should fall into the trap that the higher price tag results in greater safety. Greater comfort perhaps, but not necessarily safety.

  • -3

I thought this price should include build in camera. It's crazy price.

    • +3

      It's crazy price.

      Why?

    • +1

buy a iPhone for $1200++ for a decent camera then ..

  • Well that's presumptive.

  • Medical costs for concussion and brain damage wouldn't be cheap either. Bought 2 POC helmets, thanks for listing this we've been looking to get helmets for a while.

  • Hey Helmet…

  • +5

Non cyclists always come into cycling deals and complain about the price haha. Wait until you see how much high end bicycles cost

  • Thanks, I got the Oakley MIPS helmet which is a bit more in my budget ($89 from $240).

    https://www.pushys.com.au/oakley-aro3-australia-mips-helmet-…

  • always wanted a poc helmet but it wasn't on sale when i actually needed it. spent $140 on a giro mips helmet a few months ago and now look what happens lol

    • I usually buy something very cheap, like from Kmart where helmets are only $9. Then I wait for a deal.

      Works for most things….

      • +1

i do actually like my giro helmet very much. vents probably aren't as good as poc but it's light, comfortable and fits me well. this is more a case of fomo

  • I have two POC helmets, one in L and one in M. POC's sizing chart suggested L but—assuming that I didn't completely screw up the measurement…—I'd say that the M fits me better.

  • -3

glad my state doesn't enforce helmet laws if you over 17 Y/o

    • How fitting is it then when your location is “pain”.

      • ?? Your not even showing your location

    • +1

I don't think you'd be forced to only wear >$100 helmets.
People willing to spend $100 to protect their noggin are gonna do it no matter the requirements.

    • What state is that?
NT allows it as a decision above 17, but no states that I am aware of. Even then, if you're on the road you need to have one.

    • Really? Where do you live? I always thought the laws were nationwide

      • A state without a David Jones.
Putting that together with helmet laws, I think they are actually referring to a territory not a state. NT.

yeah, I said state because it just rolls off the tongue better and its easier for southern folk to relate too. Good detective work also lol

      • NT (a Territory and not a State) has different laws to the rest of Aus.
If you're over 17 you can ride on footpath and bike paths (off road included) without a helmet, but if you're on a road, it's like the rest of the country, you must have one.

I am guessing @Mtylr meant Territory, and doesn't know the full law.

        • I'm not going to study the law surrounding bike helmets lmao, I'm not a sweat when it comes to this stuff.
All I need to know is that its optional if your 17 and older, stay on the footpath/bikepath and if your going to head onto the road you should probably put one on.

I have also never seen or heard anyone getting booked for it. Even if your zooming around on the eScooters in the city

  • Unless you have tried one before and know it fit well and comfortable, it's a bit of an unknown to buy online based on the size chart.

Different styles from the same brand, with and without MIPS, can fit differently.

    Ordered via eBay and just received this email;

    Hi there
It has come to our attention this morning whilst updating the inventory on the website that certain products that are out of stock accidentally went 'live' on the site. Unfortunately this enabled you to order an item that is out of stock - we are very sorry for this (there was an inventory stocktake done on the area this product is located- this helmet was not in stock).
    Product: POC helmet (s)
As this is a discontinued item(s) we will refund the amount in full, this will go back into your account within 2 business days (refund receipts to follow).
Again we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
    Kind Regards,
    Pushys
