Pioneer MRX-3 Wireless Multiroom Speaker $99 C&C or + Delivery @ Digital Cinema

160

Digital Cinema have this Pioneer MRX-3 speaker for $99. They claim it's down from $599, and some places are selling it for around that price (https://www.amazon.com.au/Pioneer-Wireless-Multi-Room-Speake…) but a fairer price comparison is $149 at Kogan.

I don't have one, so don't know what it's like, but the last deal for $199 seemed reasonably popular (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/559192). This is half that price and 2/3 of Kogan price!

From Pioneer webpage:

Wireless streaming speaker with dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, Deezer, Tidal, TuneIn Internet radio and FireConnect™ multi-room.

High-quality, multi-standard, multi-room speaker with large media diversity and flexible expansion options.

When setting up a streaming system – whether for one room or a whole house – you can have great sound as well as versatility: the compact MRX-3 with its two 77mm bass-midrange speakers and the full-fledged 28mm tweeter easily fills the room with music. There is no need to be concerned whether your favourites come from a streaming service like Spotify or Tidal, are stored on a local server or on your mobile phone or tablet – regardless of the origins, format and storage location, your sound always finds the best way to the MRX-3 that supports all relevant streaming standards with Chromecast built-in, and PlayFi. In short: The MRX-3 adapts to the preferences of its user instead of forcing the application of certain methods or standards. Thanks to FireConnect™, the MRX-3 can even access sources located in other rooms – such as a record player or sound from a television – if these are connected to a FireConnect™-compatible device. Pioneer has a large selection of these in its product range and other brands will be offering FireConnect™ in the near future if they are not already doing so. One or more MRX-3 units as well as other Pioneer streaming products of the latest generation are controlled via the Pioneer Remote App for iOS and Android. Buttons are located directly on the device for frequently used functions such as volume, skip or pause.

  • Seems decent for the money

    • Yeah, that's what I thought. Hopefully someone who bought one last time can chime in and let us know what they think!

I had the predecessor to this. Sounds good-ish for the price. But had connectivity issues (so only used line in) and was too bass heavy. The mids sounded muddy.

I swapped it for 2x sonos play ones - which is clearly more than $99

    • Good to know - what was the predecessor model? Hopefully they've fixed those issues in this model…

      • Sma4. When I say predecessor I suppose that’s a loose use of words. It looks similar. The rear looks 100% the same. The actual speaker internals I have no idea

    • I second that. Good for $99.

I still use my sm4 in the garage and it works with airplay just fine. Line in with a TV too

  • No AirPlay? Even my Aldi Sonos knock off from 5 years ago has this and is still going strong!

    • Bunnings claim this:
Wireless streaming speaker with dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, Deezer, Tidal, TuneIn Internet radio and FireConnect multi-room
      So who knows

    • I couldn't see that either. It has chromecast so looks like it's more geared towards Android users.

      • Does Chromecast = Google Assistant?

        • I'd imagine its just the ability to cast to it

        • No, you'll only be able to cast from compatible apps (e.g. Spotify from a phone) or cast to it from an assistant device on your network such as a Google Home

    • I researched and concluded it is unlikely it has airplay. If it does, I would buy in a heartbeat.

    • Still love my Aldi Sonos knock off speakers, finally hooked up the soundbars to TV's and I'm very pleased!!

I'll keep using my Squeezebox Boom I got 10 years ago.

Fantastic little device. Mine died a few years back and I miss it.

    • I have a few squeezeboxes. Most of the services have been cancelled and most of the radio stations i want to stream seem to have blocked anything other than their app/google/alexa etc.. Any recommendations on getting it to stream dab+ stations on iheartradio/etc. networks?

      • I've never tried to pickup DAB radio, I use either Shoutcast or Internet Radio. Some of my favourites have gone over the years but I always find others.

Have one from the last deal connected via the Pioneer FlareConnect software to my Pioneer AV. Links beautifully from front to back of house. Have just purchased another for the back deck.

I think the sound is great. Basic adjustment ability through the pioneer app.

At this price its a great unit. Can confirm no AirPlay.

  • I feel like this question should have been easier to find the answer to, but I couldn't after 10 whole minutes of Googling. So this is my only hope - I've always had stereos with FM radios built in, is there any way to have Triple J (Perth timezone) play live on a speaker like this over wifi?

  • OOS.

  • Apparently a system error. They didn't have the stock they thought or maybe price error?
