Do I Need a Special SD Card for Recording 4K?

Camera newbie here.
Wanting to buy the Panasonic Lumix TZ90 (or ZS70) to record in 4K.

Was wondering if I need special SD cards to record the 4K with? Besides from the obvious, a large capacity, any other factors I need to consider?

Thanks,
Happy Easter!

  • Data transfer speed

  • Get the spec recommended in your camera manual. A faster card should help with stills as well btw, it does on my LUMIX in any case. Take too many photos too quickly and it has to buffer it into the memory card before talking more or whatever, faster card lowers that waiting.

  • Almost all but the highest end prosumer devices will be recording at less than 120 Mbps (15 MB/s).

If you get a card that has a U3 rating (has a 3 inside a U logo) such as the popular Samsung Evo128gb cards which can sustain 30 MB/s then you should have no problems with any video recording.

    Speed of the SD card.

  • any SD card with writing speed > max required writing speed in camera manual.

  • From the manual:
"To record 4K motion pictures, use a UHS Speed Class 3 card."

So, you're looking for cards with a 3 in the U shape, see the middle image from the top of this page:
    https://www.sdcard.org/developers/sd-standard-overview/speed…

U3 essentially means 30MB/s Write speed.

The best bang for buck for 4k (up to a 500Mbps codec, which your camera won't come close too) is the 128MB version of these:

(they are microSD cards, but come with adapters and are certainly fast enough - I use them for 4k in the big brothers to your camera - the GH5 and G9)
