Recommendations for Sydney to Melbourne Vehicle Transport

Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help out with specific recommendations for interstate vehicle transport (Sydney to Melbourne.)

The car in question is around 40 years old but in quite good condition so proper care and attention to avoid damage is of high importance.

Happy to hear from anybody with experience in the area, who to avoid, any traps, etc etc.

Thanks in advance!

Drive it there. No worries about damage, or gettin ripped off.

its only 10 hours taking your time.

    • Just did this last week, drove back my new car from Neutral Bay to Altona in 9hrs exactly, petrol stop, maccas drive through and a pit stop at lunch included. Pretty much 110 cruise control the whole way

  • Not sure you can still do this by train, but have done that in distant past. IF still so, see about a car cover as the metal from the train wheels can be a real killer with the paint.
My white vehicle, was washed off at the station, several day's it looked like a vehicle with rust smallpox, and needed a good cut and polish!. Make sure you can have it covered if the rail service is still a go!?.

  • No particular advise, have used a company called Ceva Logistics twice before and no complaints.

  • I'm assuming this is a collectible? So therefor you can't drive it?

Still hiring a car trailer and collecting yourself is the best way to ensure no damage. If that's not possible you can always pay for the insurance with whoever is transporting.

  • Sorry all I did forget to clarify that it's not driveable; collecting myself via trailer isn't really an option as I don't have a car with a towbar and it would be a 20+ hour round trip and is pretty impractical at that point.

    • Lots of places wont touch it if they cant drive it on and off the car carrier.

  • Maybe ask a local vintage car club, or look at Shannon’s website.

  • Ceva will be fine. Drop it off at their depot and pick it up at the other end. This is preferable to door to door, as they will sub out the transport to and from the depot, and those extra 2 trucks increase the risk of damage.
Although they primarily transport new and used vehicles for dealers and distributors they also transport for private individuals.
Having managed dealerships for most of my working life, I was happy to use them when I retired and preferred to transport one of our cars to the Sunshine Coast rather than drive in tandem.
They will do a walk around with you prior to hand over, as you would do with a rental car.

  • Have a look on gumtree/Facebook marketplace. I found a guy on there who moved an undriveable landcruiser from Adelaide to Melbourne (door to door) for $400 for me. He had his own truck/trailer and basically spent his time moving various cars around the country. Think I had to wait a week till he was in Adelaide, but he took good care and the car arrived in good condition.

Most companies don’t want to touch vehicles that aren’t drivable..

  • CEVA. Used recently and they were great
