Towbar Kit and Roof Rack for 4*4 Patrol

Greeting!

Hope everyone has enjoyed a nice Easter break.

I am planning to add more features for my newly purchased Patrol.

I would like to start from towbar kit and roof rack.

For towbar:

  1. which one would like recommended for full size 4*4?

  2. is it better to be installed with predator rear bar?

  3. is it hard to fit DIY?

For roof rack:

  1. which one would like recommended for full size 4*4?

  2. if I want to build a tent on top of it, any roof rack can do?

  3. I watch YouTube and it looks fitting it is easy, so DIY mostly?

Thanks!

Probably more chance by posting on one of the many Australian Patrol or generic 4x4 forums

  • 4*4 = 16

No clue about tow bar as I don't tow but came installed on the car when I bought it but for the roof rack, I bought the Rola Titan Flat tray for my Prado during the Club Day sale. Mainly purchased that as I had been saving Flybuys points to get gift-cards for it. I'm looking at ordering the low mount kit to DIY install onto the rails which does not look hard.

I would recommend going with an Alloy/Aluminium over steel as it allows you to carry more legally & safely on the roof. You can go all the way down to Kings gear or all the way up to the Front Runner & Rhino Rack.

Installation depends if you're comfortable with doing it your self.

    • Yeah the kings roof racks weigh like 50KG, pretty crazy

Yeah, that's basically half your safe carrying capacity on the roof gone.

    • Many thanks!

Really good idea on advising using gift card, I will to refer youtube to have it DIY.

      • No worries! Been waiting close to 6 months for it to down to that price but defo worth it for the price I paid.

Definitely look at YouTube for installation. The tray looks very easy to build but mounting it depending on your method will differ.

Check out Skid Factory's latest (or close to it) video, they do an installation of a full roof rack of a patrol. Should give you an idea on what to look for.

There is no one answer on what is best - that depends on what you want to use it for, what you want to spend etc

    What model Patrol (year)?

    For towbar:

which one would like recommended for full size 4*4? Probably genuine Nissan or Hayman Reese, personally I'd go genuine and have it installed by Nissan.

is it better to be installed with predator rear bar? If you plan on eventually getting a rear bar, you may as well do both now.

is it hard to fit DIY? You'd be able to find installation videos, but if you're not confident I'd get someone to do it.

For the roof rack, it's going to depend on your budget. I'll be buying a Rhino Rack platform when Autobarn have their next 25% off sale, it's a very versatile platform. ARB also have the BASE Rack which is pretty versatile too. As said above, the lighter the better.

Unfortunately not suitable for a roof top tent

    • Thanks.

Hayman Reese is 200 dollar cheaper than the genuine one. I would skip DIY on the towbar installation as you have need to cut the rear bumper.

For roof rack: if I want to build a tent on top of it, any roof rack can do?

Becareful. Every roof rack has a weight rating for on and off-road. You want to get this right so your roof top tent doesn’t go flying off the car in the middle of the bush.

Also avoid any which are mounted with rivets.
