SunRice Hinata Short Grain Rice 5kg $10 (Was $20) @ Woolworths

350

SunRice Hinata Short Grain Rice is ideal for Japanese cuisine.

'Hinata', refers to 'place in the sun' in Japanese. The sun is an essential ingredient in our Hinata short grain rice, bringing essential life and warmth to the fields from which we carefully select delicious, sun ripened rice. Hinata short grain rice has the right level of stickiness and moisture to shape sushi. When cooked it has a neutral aroma, a soft, slightly springy bite and a clean flavour, making it ideal for Japanese style cuisine.

em, japanese style rice production in Vietnam

    • that's why it is suitable for "japanese style" cuisine 😬

Doubt it's any more suitable to grow this rice in Japan, or that grown in Vietnam is indicative of an inferior product.

    • Sunrice also has Koshihikari rice grown in….emmm…Uruguay

The koshihikari Sunrice was amazing when it was grown in Aus before the drought. Hopefully they'll have some local harvest again if possible rainwise.

Might be better than grown at/near Fukushima..

    • That’s why $10, the real one grown in Japan should be $50+ at some Japanese shops.

Is it just me or does sunrice not taste that great these days…

    • +2

Not all varieties of Sunrice are grown in Australia now. Sunrise Medium Grain is still grown in Australia, but Sunrice Jasmine Fragrant Rice is imported from Cambodia. I still miss the Jasmine flagrant rice that used to be grown in Australia. It tastes so much better.

        lol flagrant

      • I still have a tiny amount of a 5kg bag of sunrice brown jasmine rice that I use for special occasions. It was a sad day when I found out they no longer sold that in supermarkets 😥

That was my go to but buying 5kg and waiting for it to be half price at Colesworth meant I one day I realised it wasn't available anymore

  • Tried this a few months ago and I rate it for the price. Not as good as the expensive Japanese rice, but still good.

  • $10/5kg is too expensive for Vietnamese rice, no matter how they brand it.
    $6.5-$7 would be more reasonable.

    • in sydney u can't get cheaper then this, no matter what brand.

Tried it. Not impressed that much. Won't repeat. My expectation for Japanese short sticky grain rice was probably high.
This rice reminds me more of Sunrice medium grain rice, in terms of texture taste and quality.

I personally prefer Italian Arborio rice as Japanese rice alternative.
