Is There an App to receive Calls over WiFi Without Restricting to Known Contacts Only?

I'm currently in an area with no service and have some important phone calls that I'll be recieving. I thought I could use WIFI calling, but apparently my new carrier doesn't include that in their service.
Is there an app I can use that will help me receive calls via wifi? I know I can Make calls using what's app etc but I need to receive them from unknown numbers.
Thanks!

  • Viber, Whatsapp. Any of them.

Oh just saw from unknown numbers. No idea then.

  • Username doesn't check out.

    Which provider is this with?

  • I used AVO while I was overseas to receive phone calls from my Aus number. It should work for your use case as well.

    https://avoapp.com/en/

It works by forwarding your calls to their number. You then answer the call by using their app.

  • You can port your number to a VoIP provider and use a Softphone app like Zoiper to receive your calls over wifi.

Or change to a provider that supports Wifi calling

  • Forwarding to Voip will work, but you wont be able to make outgoing calls with your mobile phone plan.

You will be using the voip network for outgoing and pay for a plan .

Why bother with all these, just go with a mobile provider that supports wifi calling

Looking at Felix, I cant see any real benefits they provide unless its the unlimited data

Is that what you really need?

Rather than spend money on trying to resolve getting calls, is there another slightly more expensive provider that gives you all without these complications?

    • I switched to felix a few weeks ago as my phone contract finished and I wanted something cheap whilst I look for a new phone/plan. I didnt plan to stay with them, and definetly wont now.
I'll have a look into Voip though. I only need it for a few more days so might not be worth it.
      Thank you!

  • How does WIFI work if you don't have phone coverage, no bars?

    • The house I'm in has wifi connected but there is no mobile phone service here.

  • +1

Honestly just use boost or anyone they supports wifi calling.

  • If you have a bit of technical prowess, getting a VoIP account and setting it up with a softphone on your mobile would work. Costs just $15 a year (plan itself is $0 + $15 a year to rent a phone number to receive calls.

IMO I wouldn't consider this a long-term solution unless you spend a bit more for VoIP hardware phones as well. I found softphones to be a bit flaky but I've had a set of VoIP home phones at my parent's place for years with no complaints - it's essentially like an old-school landline service but run over your internet connection instead.

  • Skype give you a local Australian number that people can ring. It is impossible to find out the exact cost until you've signed up. Skype to Skype calls are free, but Skpe to landline or mobile can incur a by the minute charge and I think there is a log on fee a few cents. I think calls to a Skype number will also incur by the minute fees which you pay. Obviously if you are going to do business with somebody, you put their mobile number in your contacts and then use WhatsApp for free.
You can choose which area you want the Skype number, maybe best in your closest city.
I think the cost of a Skype number is in the area of $3 to $7 per month.
