Canon EOS 550D DSLR Camera +18-55mm IS LENS @ Teds.com.au for $699

120

Wish I had waited 2 more weeks. I purchased a remarketed one for $700. Think it's a great price so far from a recognised store. Pay $79.95 for 4 year warranty.

  • Good price I think.
Might wanna add +18-55mm IS LENS into title?
and fyi if TED run out of stock. I think you could try and price match here. http://www.ryda.com.au/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EOS550…

    • yeah. the kit lens would add a $80 to the camera.. making it a good deal for people starting out, but a bad deal for someone who has their lenses and just getting a new body.

      • definitely worth getting kit lens

  • +1

    Cheaper from Kogan
    http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/canon-eos-550d-kit-single-lens-…
    with Austwide $29 delivery

    • This deal is cheap for Aus stock but not compare to imports.

      • +1

IRRC the Kogan 12 Australian warranty means they simply give you a new one rather than try and fix the bung one
        YMMV

        • Still, not a fair comparison.

        • does this policy applies to Kogan's other products, like mobile phone, honestly it's not a bad warranty at all :)

      • +1

If it's the same item, then why is it 'not fair' to compare? There's post of Zaavi, Ozgamshop, Amazon.co.uk and other import sites etc. etc. all over Ozbargain…

        • not the same warranty, canon australia will not touch grey stock EVER.

Better to buy from Mack Authorised shops that sell grey so at least you can buy Mack Warranty. Mack warranty is done by Canon Austrlia itself so you know professionals are handling the camera rather than some ol' chop shop guy.

Good deal for aussie stock brick and mortar store

        • yes it is the same item.
The cameras are identical in every way.
(the power adaptor connector type would varies depends on the county)

the only different is the warranty on it.

      • What is the difference between Aus stock and imports?

        • I'm pretty sure mostly it's about warranty but not Kogan in this case

        • when you buy grey, you sometimes (always?) get items that are not meant to be sold in OZ. When I received my 7d from DWI, it came with a Japanese charger, and a photocopied english manual. The camera also had Japanese as its default menu language.

        • Yeah, but if there is a significant price difference, sometimes the warrantee is acceptable, or similar, likewise for language, it's not that complicated to go in and click on English. (but depends on how good your Japanese is =)

    • I think Kogan have an important influence on the Australian retail landscape. I wasn't happy to read in their FAQ :

Q: If I purchase a Kogan product, will I be supplied with a Tax Invoice?
      A. The Order Confirmation email that you receive when you make an order is a valid Invoice.

Does that mean that the invoice is not a Tax Invoice and does not have GST? If so, that's a misleading answer to their own FAQ question.

      • No GST on purchases under $1000…. that is why these stores are cheaper. The invoice will show whether or not you pay GST

      • If the camera is in some way related to activities that derive your income you will be able to claim depreciation etc off your Taxable income - just not the GST

        • ..but it also means you cannot claim back any GST or Tax you pay on the camera if you travel. E.g. I bought from DWI a Nikon and when I asked for an Australian Tax invoice they refused as they said the transaction was done in Hong Kong, thus it was not eligible for Australian Tax.

I could have bought Australian stock with GST and then claim back when traveled making it the same if not cheaper than DWI.

Naturally, only applicable if you your preparing to travel in the near future.

  • +3

I think this deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61029 is still running so for the body and lense it is $655 for Aus stock. Still better than Ted's offer.

    http://camerapro.net.au/canon-550d-1855mm-lens-single-austra…

and just the body only is down to $543 (or $533 if the $10 OzBargain deal is still valid).

  • Just wondering about those who have bought a DSLR camera, do you think it was worth it? Have you used it as much as you thought you would?

    • I like taking photos then it's worth it but it's expensive to go into DSLR.

    • With consumer dslr going down in price like this why wouldnt you ? 2 years back it is hard to believe dslr will be under 1000 mark now you can get under 500 on special and no you don't need a special lens for taking good photo just a kit lens will do and it will be like 10 times better than a 200-300 dollar consumer point shoot

This alone justify the purchase I think

    • Once you go black, you never go back.
The 550D I purchased is amazing. Having invested at least $1000 in numerous
portable ones which have failed, or broken, the 550D is excellent.
The biggest difference with DSLR's is low light conditions. Night-time or when things are moving fast,
it literally gets rid of all blurryness since the aperture is so large. Point and shoots are nice, but
you simply cannot compare with DSLR's. I was sceptical of them at first but having bought one, I don't even take my canon point and shoot anymore.

You really need to ask yourself the question about what type of camera do you want. I know this sounds simplistic but it's the honest truth. If you want something small, simple to use and take anywhere go for a compact. If you're after a camera you are willing to take time to learn, carry around a heavier bulkier weight and typically spend a lot more on in the long term in terms of lenses a DSLR is definitely the way to go. You get greater flexibility and control with the DSLR and I have never regretted my decision to buy mine. In fact now I get frustrated using a compact. I do however keep a compact in my camera bag for those spur of the moment quick shots I want to take without thinking which lens am I using and which settings am I on. Simple answer is I use mine a lot :)

      • spend a lot more on in the long term in terms of lenses

Will cause you heaps once you get into photography

      • +1
i do absolutely the same thing.
P&S (not cheap one) in my bag all the time, and DSLR for special occasions (like birthday parties, etc).

    • You can get a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera like the Sony NEX ones. Body is like 1/3 the size of a DSLR but image quality will be identical.

      • True but they are in different leagues with regard to all round performance.

        • The mirrorless are much faster at capturing images and don't collect dust/grit inside the space(barn?) needed for the mirror to operate! ;-)

        • The extra features of a DSLR such as PDAF, OVF, hotshoe etc won't matter to people after a compact camera. The size and weight of a NEX camera is significantly smaller and no where near as bulky as a DSLR and the image quality will equally match most prosumer DSLRs.

        • dpreview's review of the NEX-5n:

"The NEX-5N's image quality is excellent. The 16.1MP sensor in the 5N is capable of capturing images that rival some of the best APS-C format DSLRs on the market"

          dpreview's review of the NEX-7:

"The NEX-7's image quality is difficult to fault…. It's no stretch to say that, at its best, the NEX-7 offers the finest still image quality of any APS-C camera, bar none."

    • I have a canon 400D. I also have 2 small children so don't really find the time to look through photo's that I take. I find carrying the DSLR a pain in the ar$e - one more thing to keep track of. I also hate that any time I think about getting an external flash, a better lens or whatever then you're talking more $$$'s. all that said, it takes great photo's, so is used around the home for portraits a lot.

I also have a tiny Sony shock proof point and shoot. I love the fact I can put it in my pocket and it takes up no extra space other than that. The kids can use it without me hyperventilating that they're about to drop it etc. My wife thinks it's too slow and the flash is too bright.

So… different people have different needs. Think about the time and money you have to dedicate to photography.

    • It's probably not worth it. Unless… you want to carry it around with you all the time. Realistically I normally just use a smaller camera that can fit in your pocket for those moments, or even my mobile phone. But if you can justify it as a hobby… I guess it is ok… but seriously very few people get the benefits of a DSLR… I mean, unless you are doing it for a living…. a pocket camera with flash is good enough.. even for prints / editing etc. Most effects you can do on a computer. Zoom - there are add ons for even pocket cameras. I think one of the most important things is - filters - zoom lens, and tripod. Develop the skill to take pictures through intuition or a cheap or free online course. From my friends and I.. most people have gone in to DSLR… because it's a fad.. or cool thing to do like Apple iPad.. except used a lot less… I've seen pictures from pocket cameras much better than most DSLR pictures. You have to ask yourself. Are you the kind of person to carry a tripod, all the lenses, special flash, diffuser etc and DSLR all the time on you? To get those special effects? Stability etc. Honestly I think most of us bought it cause it was cool or to try to justify it as a hobby…. hardly use it as much as I would want or need to… e.g. birthday parties - do you want to be enjoying the party? or be the one taking picture of people enjoying the party? at the beginning it's kind of cool - cause people will ask you about it.. it's big… but then again… when people buy those giant tablet phones.. and talk in to them - people notice that too and will ask you about that…..

      • no offense mate but
        RAW vs JPEG
big lens (not nesessary heavy) and big sensor vs tiny ones (esp. in low light conditions e.g. indoor).

  • good deal.
i am just wondering why 550 got so cheap but not 600 ?

    • because 550 was released before 600

    • 600D TLK was on special for $988 at Harvey Norman during the half yearly clearance

    • not too much difference, specially where it matters. 600D has more fancy photo modes and features and a flip out screen. That's it basically, not worth the extra $200 premium for the same internals

      • Agree, 600D is not worth paying extra over the 550D

      • flip out screen - it is what i like about it, but it's not worth ~$300 extra.
actually i am "pentaxian" so i'll be waiting patiently till Pentax will release a DSLR with a flip out screen. hopefully it is gonna happen within next 2-3 years. Or probably i am too optimistic.

  • Hi.Fist post so i hope it is worthy. They have this at Digital Camera Warehouse for $679 with lens plus bonus battery.
    http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod1841.htm

    • is that aussie stock?

      • Digital Camera Warehouse only has aussie stock. I have bought from them before. You can pick up from their store.

    • @dealsniper No, but with the extended warranty, it's even better then aussie stock

      • I think you may be wrong as far as I can read on their website:

This digital camera comes with a
        12 month Australian warranty
        with Canon Australia
        Digital Camera Warehouse supplies cameras
        sourced through Australian channels, and
does not participate in "Grey Market" imports

    • I don't think extra battery is necessary. I never needed one.
      About 500-700 shots/full charged battery.

    • Seems that the 550D is becoming widely available around this pricing level now. Sounds like it might be almost end of model runout.

  • Food for thought about DSLRs becoming obsolete in the near future - by a well regarded photographer
    http://www.stuckincustoms.com/page/2/

    • +2

I disagree that DSLRs will become obsolete anytime soon, but my bet is that they'll increasingly be confined to a niche and sold nearly exclusively to pros. Most consumers should probably give mirrorless cameras a look, if not now, then maybe in another year or so when their systems mature a little bit more. In any case, an "obsolete" camera doesn't mean it's suddenly incapable of taking great photos — a few professional photographers I know (who exhibit and are published) still shoot with medium and large format film, for instance.

I also dislike that guy's photos with a burning passion, as I do most over-processed HDR photos. I see him as more of a blogger with a camera rather than a notable photographer. He's the photography equivalent of Thomas Kinkade or Ken Done — utterly tasteless, without any sense of nuance or subtlety. But this is probably a debate left to elsewhere… :)

    • if DSLRs gonna disappear within next 2-3 years (or will be for pro's only), i won't regret it, providing that mirrorless cameras will have compatable mounts (inc. AF functionality ) so that I could reuse my lenses.
i am not so much conserned about technology used in the "black box" called camera, i am more concerned about it is functionalty and digital pictures quality.

  • I bought this yesterday from teds (order online and pick up instore) . Paid 655aud as I asked for price match with the store in Brisbane.
Will get back the GST which is 60AUD as I am going overseas soon. That brings it down to 595.
    Very good deal for me.

    • Which teds store was this?

      • I did a price match online then pick it up in Camberwell - Melb

    • Where did you see they advertised for $655?

    • Can you post ur receipt please? Also are u in qld? I'm after a NSW one ;)

    • i did price match too with campro and tedscamera offered me $665. my Bro is going overseas but camera will stay with me so would it be possible to get back the GST in my case.

      • Nope, you have to bring the camera through custom.
and sometimes the name on the invoice must match with the name on the passport.

        • not totally legit but most of the time they don't ask you to take it out. Ask him to take the box, put something heavy in it and seal it so that he doesn't have to show what is inside because it is a gift

      • Is that a question, mady123? (Didn't see a question mark.)

You cannot get back the GST if the camera is not travelling. The tax officer needs to see both the goods and the receipt before the GST is refunded.

        Tourist Refund Scheme
        - Wear or carry the goods on board the aircraft or ship and present them along with your original tax invoice, passport and international boarding pass to a Customs Officer at a TRS facility

        • gr8, that means i should not ask for GST refund. Still a good deal though. thx for your replies and sorry forgot the (?) before

  • camerapro have further reduced the 550D body to $543..
