Sony A7C on Sale, Decent Camera (with Kit Lens) ?

JB Has the A7C on sale. I know it's basically a A7iii with some updated tech, and more compact body.

Anyone have it and can tell me what they think about it? I'm not a beginner photographer, not a professional either, wanting something compact as that's usually the reason I leave my camaras at home and only bring my iphone.

I should have mentioned some more details. I'm a run and gun shooter, prefer to shoot a bit of everything: street, landscape, portrait, astro. Thats why the compact body is appealing to me. I am planning on pairing this with the sigma or Tamron (28-70 2.8ish) Lens. OR I was even thinking getting the kit lens as my "compact setup" and then a couple other lenses depending on what I'm shooting.

Currently I have a Canon G7X point and shoot and Sony A6000, I've had DSLRs in the past (Can't remember which Canon Model).

I don't really have a budget, but also don't want to go crazy. Around the $3000 mark is what I would be okay with spending.

Thanks,

  • What camera are you using at the moment? What do you usually shoot? And what's your budget? (Keeping in mind you'll have to buy lenses for this too.)

    • I should have mentioned that in my post, edited now.

  • I've been shooting with sony alphas (a5000, a7ii and now a7iii) for 5ish years, not much experience prior. Your best value bet are Tamron lens and eventually the "trinity kit". Though the 28-200 looks to be a great value and single lens travel option.

Sony's native lens are great if you want fast lens or primes. Sigma does have lens over 300mm but Tamron covers just about everything else and about significantly cheaper than native Sony lenses.

    • +1

Sigma primes are good if you prefer to go the prime route (they don't make many third party zoom lenses).

  • $2999 is that decent price for A7C?

You want compact yet you have a6000. What's the problem with that cam? Remember FF lenses are way heavier, bigger, and more expensive.

  • What kind of kit lenses do $3000 cameras come with? I know for $1000 cameras the kit lens is said to be quite bad and in my experience so far the cheapest branded prime lens will make the kit lens on budget pro cameras look kinda crap in comparison.

  • Or you could spend the money on lenses for the a6000 and get much better images.

Bodies come and go, glass is forever (almost).

New bodies are nice to have but you would almost certainly not be limited by the current gear you have.

    • Yep I would agree. a6000 is a fantastic camera (I used to own one) and for the price of an A7C you could get some pretty nice glass.

      • A6400 would be the best value for money model.

          OP already owns the a6000.

  • A7C looks tasty eh? Agree that FF glass is usually gonna be bigger, but then you might be able to get an f4 zoom instead of f2.8. 24mm on FF is like 16mm on APSC right? A 16mm 2.8 has an aperture of 5.71mm. A 24mm f4 has an aperture of 6mm. It is very close. You lose a stop in speed but probably gain a stop in sensor performance anyway.

Looks like Sony has both 24-70 and 24-105 f4 lenses on offer. They still look a little chunky though eh? Might just be that teensie lens mount making it look like that though ;o)

    I don't have one though.
