The grey is more expensive because it's the XL btw

If they are 'discontinued' I'd say it's a 99% chance it's just a new packaging design.

Sorry, forgot to include the link to the "rumour" article https://www.brickfanatics.com/is-the-lego-group-about-to-dis…

I agree with you that it's more likely to be a packaging/product number changes.

    • +3

Probably but they did release a new road plate system this year so there's a small chance they're going to update the baseplates to a more compatible format, afterall the current ones are an odd element being a half plate thickness and no ability to attach anything underneath.

The current plates in the op are a pain. But the new system is total trash.

All they needed to do was make the plates a full stud thick so you could connect to the bottom…

I think lego made a pure greed based decision trying to force everyone to change to a more expensive system.

    Or get these for $3.

My kid is having no problem using this. But I have got no comparison as I don't have lego plate.

    • +2

Eh they're never as good as the real thing

      • +3

True, it's not, but in this case it's not bad for $3.

Especially the target ones with roads and crossings on them. The real ones cost hundreds just for a basic desk-sized city, and that one works basically exactly the same as the real ones.

    • I have a few of those which came attached to my kids' LEGO table.

They are adequate, but they tend to bend and warp (results in them not sitting flat) and the pieces don't quite fit "right".

    • Yup nothing wrong with these, I switched to these as the kids 2 & 4 damage the hell out of everything. Works well for them. Have an upvote.

  • Any ideas on Duplo bases? They seem to be often sold out or expensive.

    • Just get lego. It's compatible with duplo pieces after all.

      • +5

Only on very square pieces. Duplo animals or round pieces don't go on normal lego, and even most square pieces sort've pop off standard lego base plates.

        • thanks, didn't think of that. Will pass then!

  • Are these good for a Lego wall?

    • +15

Absolutely. I even had my LEGO Mexicans pay for it.

blue, green, white are all now $8

    • Updated deal to reflect changed price

    • Glad I picked up blue and green at the cheaper price

  • Thanks OP.

Looks to be price matching a special at Toys R Us: e.g. https://www.toysrus.com.au/lego-10700-classic-large-green-ba…

The Gray 10701 was cheaper ($12) at Toys R Us but looks to have sold out.

  • Pity the Duplo ones aren't available :(

  • the curious case of grey supremacy

    • +3

Larger size explains the higher cost

      • I know its difficult to explain the rumours are only there to try and drive sales in this case on builders stuff to Dumbo investors who don't know the poor history of Classics in that field .
I can assure everyone no way these plates are being removed without a same size rebirth lol .

    Gray is $12 now
