Still pretty hard to justify ebay plus imo. Amazon smashing it.

    • +40

I might sign up if they offer me a free $50 Amazon voucher…

    • +26

I don't know about Amazon smashing it, more deals I see on eBay than Amazon on here. Most Amazon deals are toiletries which you could get from Coles and WW few cents more anyway.

Perhaps Amazon good for someone who don't feel like visiting to shops or prefer Amazon prime videos.

      • +35

I have both Prime and eBay plus. I mostly shop on Amazon. Gotta love next day delivery on most items, including weekend deliveries.

        Free games is another bonus

        • +12

agree, the next day delivery is too good

            • +1

@justtoreply: Just don't order them if you don't want them. Easier to cancel Amazon orders than eBay ones. Usually they tell you it's too late because it's already been sent with eBay anyway, but you're still waiting a week or so to receive it.

              • -3

@Miss B: Do you even ozbargain?

"Buy first think later" + working = problematic

                • @justtoreply: You still have several hours to cancel. If its that much of a problem, after work have a look at everything you impulsively bought during the day and cancel the Amazon stuff you don't want. Anything you bought from anywhere else it'll be too late to cancel, but depending where you bought it you might be able to return it after it arrives.

                  • -1

@Miss B: Seriously though, within an hour it can be too far through the dispatch process.

This happens long prior to any shipping notification you might receive. I guess you wouldn't know unless you've tried canceling.

I've only had halls a dozen fence sits. Maybe 4 lego sets I tried to cancel. Two of them were too far through dispatch to be cancelled. One within an hour and one end of the same day.

OTOH I've only ever needed one item fast.

So overall I don't like it.

I don't care if you like it. Up to you. But convo over.

                    • +2

@justtoreply: You are complaining Amazon ships too fast. That is their key selling point.

I receive emails an order has been placed for S&S reorders a few days before dispatched and advising me I have until a specific date to cancel. They don't reorder and ship the same day the email is received.

Anyway no need to respond not trying to stir you up

                    • @justtoreply: Fair enough. I've cancelled at least 20 orders, nothing I'd be upset about if it was too late. I've never once had any issue cancelling up to at least 8 hours later. I might have just gotten lucky, or it could be a Lego thing as I've never tried with Lego.

I've had payment fail when I used the wrong debit card and it didn't have any money, perhaps that would work.

        • +1

          Same boat.

        • +4

actually surprised by this, got my sleep-in interrupted by a delivery on a sunday… i thought it was a prank at first.

        • Yes, for me free next day delivery including weekends was the big thing, so many times I've bought items which cost less than $5 just before midnight, just to get it the next day. Cheapest thing I've bought was an eraser for $2. Plus you also get Amazon prime video.

        • +2

          Invincible on Prime Video.

        • +1

Free games? please share more info, i've never heard of this/

        • Are groceries in amazon cheaper than coles woolies aldi?

          • @OzFrugie: They frequently price match Coles and Woolworths and then also reduce the price further by 10% with "subscribe and save". But always best to compare prices

            • @cute as duck: How do u price match with amazon?
Do u have to talk or chat with their support first?
Does it include half price weekly deals at coles n woolies?

      • The eBay "deals" seem to be highly conditional. E.g. have to use AfterPay to get 20% discount even if you're a paying eBay member. And any codes you had as a paying eBay member couldn't be used with the promoted discount.

So… it's not so glossy when you look into the details.

    • +11

supporting Amazon nowadays, means supporting a business
that has become quite exploitative and very Black Mirror now.

      • +18

Constant video surveillance of drivers, forced to urinate in bottles, convicted of withholding pay to already hard done by employees, and when they do they and stand up, they get crushed.

Absolutely horrible company. Think about what it cost others when that next parcel appears on your doorstep…

        • the more you yawn, as a driver, a camera deducts 'points' from your employment record.
then, the AI fires you (eventually).

same goes for warehouse workers, where the video cameras
watches your footsteps and monitors your break-times.
out of line? 'points' deducted from the employment record.

        • Thanks for the links.
          I read the last 2.
I never knew it was this bad at Amazon.

I cancel my yearly subscription when it ends.

      • +3

same if you get food delivery, food delivery workers don’t have it good either.

        • +1

          Agree.

that's why i have never used Uber Eats and do not have a Prime membership.

i also don't like tipping culture either.

        • I have a friend who delivers for menulog and he says it's good. Also his friends like it.
          - may not everywhere.

      • +3

Totally agree. I can't morally support buying from Amazon unless I have no other option (which is very rare). Disgusting company, disgusting exploitation of worker for Bezos' pocket-lining. Sometimes, there are more important things than saving a dollar or two.

    • +1

Even if they pay you to be a member? What arithmetic is that?? And how does one exclude the other?? Do you become a sworn enemy of Coles when you shop at WWs (or vice-versa)? Whatever happened to bargain hunting?

      • +3

Your conscience happened. Username doesn't check out.

    • +5

Used eBay for the first time in months the other week. Sellers location said Australia yet item came from overseas. Very annoying.

      • Thats been like that for ages. If they're upfront about postage times its a non issue…but if they say 3-5 days and it takes 5 weeks..well..

      • +2

very common, but if you click into their ratings it usually says where they are a member (location) some do have warehouse facilities in Oz though

      • +2

yeah that's hugely annoying and ebay doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

      • +1

What's perverse is that it is often cheaper to post from overseas than it is to post within Australia.

      • a little trick for that

look for sellers who just take a picture of the item, nothing fancy they are always from australia

    • +5

I have both Prime and Ebay Plus.

I use both quite a bit. Amazon's Australia store is terrible to be honest, the lack of range compared to Amazon US is significant. But I do like the fact I can buy international items with free shipping over $49, so I exploit that a fair bit…. if I can find the item I am looking for on Amazon AU.

But for other things, especially smaller/cheaper items, Ebay or Aliexpress are much better stores.

Ultimately, both are useful, but Amazon is by no means killing anything at the moment.

    • +3

Honestly, amz search is so poor it's basically unusable.. I use google to find something there, but then how do you filter and sort by price? And then price wise.. ebay beats amazon 9 out of 10 times..

      • +3

I have never had any issues with Amazon search whereas eBay search in unsearchable. Absolutely hate multi-variation listings. A lot of sellers use it as search manipulation by including a cheap $1 item so when sorting by price they appear.

        • +1

multi-variation listings do exist on amz as well, it's just harder to find :-)

      • +5

Amazon's search is a complete waste of time, they end up only showing you what they want you to buy, and often that has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the keywords you provide in the search.

Google and Camelcamelcamel have a better chance of finding what you want on Amazon.

  • +2

Can the $50 be used to get any gift cards?

    • +4

      No

      Use of $50 Voucher
      4. Excluded Items means all items listed in the following categories: Cars, Bikes, Boats (9800); Car & Truck Parts (6030); Coins (11116); Collectables (1); Gift Cards (184609); Other Lots More Items (88433); Real Estate (10542); Services (316); Tickets, Travel (11730).

    • +2

no code allowed, no gift card, good to use if you are buying some second hand parts. otherwise, it's not easy to spend the 50 in 30 days in one transaction.

      • +2

simply ask your mate to sell something on eBay and buy it of him on eBay.

        • +4

          "Plus items only."

          • @MiscOzB: thats only for the $5 monthly voucher 50 $ voucher works on non ebay plus items

            • @USER DC: It literally says Plus items only for the $50 voucher https://i.imgur.com/P254JAZ.png
Edit: Ok I see now it has the "^" symbol for the $5 vouchers. But why would it also say "Min spend $50"? Do you have to spend a minimum of $50 for the $5 vouchers?

              • @MiscOzB: Yes $50 min spend on $5. And no other coupons in the same transaction. Which makes them nearly useless.

              • +2

@MiscOzB: thats $5 monthly voucher which have a minimum 50 dollar spend and have 1 ebay plus item in that transaction of more than 5$.

that's totally separate from the $50 voucher i was talking about. $50 voucher has no minimum spend no ebay plus item required.

      • +2

        coles

      • That's about a week worth of grocery shopping at Coles@eBay for us.

  • +18

They should pay to use eBay plus . Such a pathetic customer service. And try contacting them. Offshore Chat support is the only option and they take 10 mins to type ‘how I can help you a?” .. and ‘ sorry we can’t do anything about it. Sorry for inconvenience’.

    • +1

      +1
ozplaza sent me a tap w/ Fastway, and 5 weeks later I contacted support and they said I should have purchased from a more reputable seller, seriously.
Fastway damaged the package and sent it back, and PayPal gave me a refund… 8 week ordeal just for a tap.

      • "and they said I should have purchased from a more reputable seller"

And they let them on their platform LOL, talk about promoting a seller as a big seller and then saying it was a mistake to buy from them!

  • +6

Excludes WA, NT and TAS. and more T&Cs apply rather emphasise its uselessness

    • That relates to the express shipping eligibility only. Items to those areas will still be eligible for free post but not free express post.

      • sadly even thats not always true…

  • +24

Ebay plus is trash…. If you're getting it for free because you are planning on making a purchase greater than 50 dollars then it's just barely acceptable.

Customer service suck. They hide bigger discounted prices/codes and show lower ones. On confronting them they didn't care in the slightest.

    • +9

They hide bigger discounted prices/codes and show lower ones ??? What do you mean

If you consider the voucher they give out free $50, it's kinda essentially eBay plus for free (You Gain $1)
After you factor in things like eBay Tuesdays the ones that are great deals (that are like may be 20 times a year)
and the usual Free returns + express shipping on certain items.

I CERTAINLY DONT THINK ITS TRASH. It may not be the best

    • +5

I reported this exact behaviour to the ACCC, and their response was, in a nutshell, we’ll keep an eye on complaint numbers and investigate if we receive alot.

I’ve found often when you navigate to an item it doesn’t show any discount, but then when you exit and go back into the item, viola the ‘lowest’ discount available (if multiple) suddenly shows up..

      • +1

From what I have seen, the ACCC only puts in an effort if it gets them attention in the media. Otherwise they are useless.

    • +2

Exactly, they have the worst customer service. The customer service is arrogant. From my past experience, the price guarantee is a big joke, they make you feel like you are begging them for price match. Instead, Amazon is offering "Shut up, take my credit" regardless you are a member or not.

    • If you're getting it for free because you are planning on making a purchase greater than 50 dollars then it's just barely acceptable.

lol…ok it's a "Free" 12 month "upgrade" so thats hardly barely acceptable.

Their customer service have been great to me in the past (but i must admit i didn't use eBayPlus 2020). They helped me make several returns where the seller previously denied or argued their case. I agree with the discounted pricing but i guess they could always not show any discounts but that's where the luxury of Ozbargain takes over because better codes are so much easier to obtain with little work on here.

      • Looks like they have outsourced their Customer Service to the India/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh etc region. Use to be the Philippines I think, where you could actually call in and they were quite good at helping you sort out issues. Now, their Customer service is terrible.

      • You're entitled to your opinion but I don't see it as a genuine upgrade when they behave deceitfully and don't provide any real extra customers service.

As I said if one is already spending 50 dollars on something then this becomes barely acceptable as it makes it free. It is not free if you aren't intending to spend that voucher anyway as you are paying for a rubbish service and getting a 50 dollar voucher that you have to then spend with them. Otherwise it is pretty rubbish in my opinion.

  • +1

They're so desperate! Amazon is ruining everyone's business.

    • +16

They've been offering them since Day 1 of Ebay Plus.

I really don't want Amazon to dominate but things like Ebay Plus show why they're winning. It's like they saw all the money Amazon Prime makes and wanted to grab some.. but didn't actually want to offer any benefits.

    • +4

I read that australia is the only market that ebay outdoes amazon.

They want to keep their first place lead, but they also want to milk that cow while the milkings good.

      • +3

Ebay was here for a long ass time before amazon so its only because we didn't know it could be that good., Now they dragged their feet for a good decade-plus and only rushing to keep up since amazon AU arrived.

    • I went to check if you are a bot :-) I struggle to remember when I bought something from amz.. apart from their US website reviews it's pretty much useless.. and judging by number of posts here on ozb apart from free books not much there on amz…

      • Based on upvotes for the eBay Plus deal and Amazon membership deal that was posted after the eBay one, it would appear Amazon is a lot more popular on here. Couldn't live without Amazon, Americans barely use eBay, I mean look at how many households have Prime in USA (more than half) and are happy to pay the approx $150 annual fee.

Amazon Australia will continue to grow here and increase their capabilities.

        • +1

when postage is like $15 each item, prime becomes a clear choice to erase that. it only takes buying a minimum of 10 times a year to be worth.

        • +1

Well, prime gives you much more then free delivery and few discounts..

        • +1

Yeah ebay is pretty small in the US now. Youtubers even do videos like "I bought this off ebay, let's see how it goes". Don't think people have faith in them at all anymore. Turning into AliExpress

        • Amazon is horrible to their workers.

          https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1262367

  • +4

then cancel it and they offer you a $30 voucher not to. get that voucher then cancel anyway.

I asked them why they charged me 2 $8 fees for direct debit dishonors when my due balance was $0 and they responded with an email about dildos.

    • get that voucher then cancel anyway.

Lol brutal. I thought the extra $30 was only if you signed back up and paid Ebay + again?

      • try it I guess, you get the full year anyway

        • I cancelled as soon as I got the $50 voucher hah, just to make sure I didn't forget and auto renew.

      • It is. It comes after you pay in full.

    • +1

$0 and they responded with an email about dildos.

That's one way to distract yourself from their incompetence.

    • Is it ebay voucher? I was given a Coles voucher with $80 min spend. No other $30 voucher in sight.. should I check with customer care that was it supposed to be a Coles voucher?

  • +15

    Mthly $5 eBay Vouchers

eBay plus items only. Minimum spend $50. Can't use other vouchers.

    • +1

Precisely. The vouchers are nearly useless.

This is a crap post. Putting only half the info in the title and having a useless body text is misleading.

    • wow…i didn't know this.

so, minimum spend of $50 gets you a "10% discounts" ($5 voucher)
which effectively removes the 10% mark-up the seller has on the item.

then, eBay takes fees from the postage costs (and Paypal makes their fees too).

  • +4

What does the plus do? The benefits don’t ADD up

  • +4

This has been going since February, if I ever had to actually pay for Plus I would have to consider it but when it's free you might as well.

Plus has unique codes, some Tuesday deals worth chasing, free express post upgrades and you'll probably use a couple of the monthly $5 vouchers.

  • +5

eBay is the worst for customer support. Especially when it comes to their own membership. I’ve contacted them several times over the one issue and their response was always the same. We can not give you a time that we will respond back to you. 3-4 weeks…. waiting

  • +9

Horrible customer service and very slow eBay plus delivery, no where near as good as Amazon prime

    • +3

This. When I want an item, guaranteed, in quick time. Amazon every single time.

EBay is filled with sellers who are hopeless.

    • +2

True ! Amazon has started to deliver on weekends sometimes and that too next day delivery. eBayplus is trash

      • Amazon has started to deliver on weekends

This is definitely the case. I've placed orders at around 10 or 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights and had Amazon deliver the next morning. I'm in Sydney.

I'd like to see ebay start doing 12 hour weekend deliveries.

        • Is it only things shipped from Amazon?

          • +1

@capslock janitor: I think so. I can't recall if there's been other 'fulfilled by Amazon' products also, but it should say in the listing that it's "Deliver by Xpm, tomorrow". Amazon deliveries to my place almost always seem to arrive late morning or early afternoon.
