Found a Lost Puppy with Microchip

Found small puppy wondering around our street with broken leg, took her to local vet and they scanned the microchip, they didn't provide me with the owner details saying it is confidential.
I'm kind of concerned if they gonna resell it.
Unfortunately couldn't take it to Rasp as was closed.
How can I track down if they found the owner etc.
Do they usually keep the owner details?

Vets are usually quite honest and it's rare to find a dodgey one. What makes you think they would sell it?

Just gut feeling I asked what suburb is it from, they said it's confidential and they do sell pets as well.

Would you want you info to be given out to random strangers who might ask for a ransom or reward for 'finding' a puppy?

Yes. They will contact the owners.
I know it is annoying, but the Privacy laws really make it risky for them to tell you about the owner - it's a grey area and they could get in trouble…

Why the hell would a vet resell a puppy?!

    • OP is in QLD from inferring past post, maybe they do things differently there?

I've been to a few vets in QLD and never encountered a dodgy one before, although it's possible some are out there.

Never seen one selling dogs but I did know one that would occasionally adopt out kittens. I assume they were supplied by RSPCA, as I know RSPCA send animals out to Petbarns for adoption.

I've never heard of a vet reselling someone's microchipped pet before.

          Ok thanks.

This comment from OP, perhaps OP is an armchair Columbo.

    Lol

  • Get on your local "lost and found pets" page on Fartbook. Someone will know someone who knows or is looking for that lost puppy. If they contact you, tell them you took it to the vet.

  • Why would you care if the vet “resells” the dog?
It’s not like the current owner is doing a particularly good job at caring for it.

    • Pets escape and get hurt. We had to Colditz the front porch of our place because our “Houdini” of a cat kept finding ways to escape. Every time we blocked up one space she would force open another bit. Fortunately she didn’t get hurt, and mostly just went to next doors laundry area, but I freaked out every time and scoured the neighbourhood looking for her. Particularly with a young pet they squeeze out through places you don’t think they can.

They won't get much for it if it is broken…

Vet will fix it up first…

        Will still be a refurb..

Ok everyone paws for a minute and think about this

      • yeah but you would Think they wanna find the original owners to charge them thousands for the fix!

Surely the owner would have pet insurance, or expect a new post on, lost dog found vet charged me $$$ but…

You did the right thing. I wouldn’t worry about the vet doing the right thing.

    • you mean WRONG thing?

      • I meant the right thing in taking it to the Vet.
