You want a beautiful smartphone to be built a certain way with little BS

You want a smartphone that actually gets updates

You want a quality built phone that people will ask "what is that" because they notice how inferior their palm pebbles are compared to this glass slab

You want a phone nobody will have but not because it's some Doge phone nobody will buy

This is your chance to get this rarely discounted phone at the all time lowest price. New model is out a few months but will likely be >$1600+, so half price for a still fast and relevant spec phone is a better buy IMO.

Both Xperia 1 ii and Xperia 5 ii are the same phone except key feature differences 4k vs 1080p screen, 60hz vs 120hz refresh rate, 6.5 vs 6.1 inch screen, Qi charging vs none.

          • @MrFunSocks: True, but this price is on point and some people prefer clean Android as well as an unobstructed screen with front facing stereo speakers. I got sick of One UI very quickly. I agree with the camera part though, Sony hasn't done enough for almost a decade on that. The fanboys beg to differ.

  • +1

If the display was a little brighter on this I would have jumped on it.

  • I don't see any benifit of having a 4k display on a smartphone, 2k is more than enough , 4k drains battery

    • That's why the 5 II exists.

  • +2

    +1 for the writeup

Also I only buy Sony phones, Xz2 still going strong

  • I wonder if it supports dual sim + micro sd card at the same time ?

    • +1

The second sim card slot is a hybrid slot, you choose either a microSD card or a second SIM

  • Xperia 1 3 will be out in like 2-3 months

    • +2

      Not at OzB prices though

      • Just for FYI in case anyone didn't know/cared

I keep hearing great things about Sony but the last xperia i had (6 years ago) had the worst UI ever.. How does this compare to the pixel?

    • +3

It's very similar to a pixel actually (I have an Xperia 1 ii)
Sony's UI is very close to stock android.

Still rocking my 3 year old XZ premium and have long loved it. It's getting a little laggy and the battery a bit aged, and would like to stay with Sony over Spamsung, but no 5G or VoLTE in Aus is a bit of a deal breaker for an $800+ phone.

    • +4

A fellow XZ Premium holder! Rocking mine for 4 years and still serves me well, a bit laggy at times and UI crashing (very rare).
Otherwise it's pretty good for general everyday use!

      • +1

Still using my XZ Premium too! Can't fault it, it has outlasted many of my mate's flagships since and still going strong. Every other phone on the market right now just seems like a compromise. Wish this phone had VoLTE, I would've bought it no questions asked.

        • It's less of a compromise if you go down in the price range towards $300-$400 Motorola or Nokia phones, since you expect less and they still have stock Android. The 10 II is an option to upgrade to at $400, and it has night mode over these two above.

Love my 5ii. Happy to take questions if people have any.

    • Do you get 5G ot VoLTE?

      • Handset is capable but I don't get 5G on my Coles SIM. I do have VOLTE though.

        • Is ur 5 ii imported from HK as well? Some people have been saying the SEA variant has 5G?

        • +1

VoLTE most likely isn't working. It will show it is turned on but when you're on an actual call it will drop to 3G/H, can you confirm this?

          • @wangasm: Huh, you're right. I barely ever call anyone so never noticed. Weird that the service menu says it's active - why's that happening?

            • +2

@GSDan: Likely Sony doesn't have the proper configuration for Australian carriers since they don't sell the phone here. And/or the carriers are rejecting an "unsupported" phone.

  • hmm they are not Australian stock right.. I remember sony mobile has quite australia

Correct, will have to be grey import.

You want a smartphone that actually gets updates

    Pffft…
I always bought Sony since the Ericsson days and then I got the XZ1 Compact shortly after release. It was in many ways the perfect phone for me. But it only received 2 updates before being abandoned by Sony! Never again.

    • +1

No way, I had the exact same experience, except it was actually ONE update from 8 to 9. I daily drove my XZ1 Compact from September 2018 to October last year. Moved to Samsung (horrible defects with the S20 FE and their customer service has atrocious compliance with Consumer Law), now with Motorola. Going to stick with them until I get a discounted 5 III next year, because I'm not paying top dollar for a phone with one update left.

      • +1

Samsung = terrific screens but too much bloatware for me. I ended up getting a Pixel 4a for $520 and haven't looked back. The UI/UX is top notch, although I do wish there was a Pixel of a similar size to the XZ1 Compact or iPhone Mini.

        • +1

I've been thinking about getting one (not for myself), however the touchscreen issues seem unresolved. I don't know why I bought an XZ1 Compact as I now prefer larger screens. Samsung screens are actually trash, some fail out of the box, the S20 FE still has ghost touch issues, and AMOLED uses PWM to modulate brightness which hurts your eyes. There's also still a weird colour shift with AMOLEDs.

  • You want a smartphone that actually gets updates

HAHAHAHA. What a joke. Sony stinks at updates!!! My XZ1 Compact got a single Android upgrade from Android 8 to Android 9. Sony continues to not provide compatible features launched on new phones to older phones. And security updates are very late, especially with Hong Kong firmware (on these phones). Buy a Pixel or Galaxy if you're looking for software support.
