nbn FTTP Wireless Router Recommendations?

Hi all, am moving into a new house with NBN (FTTP) in a couple of weeks.
The NBN box is in the garage so am thinking I'll need decent mesh wifi?
What do you recommend? Deco M5? Google Nest? Latter is pricey but would it be good to hookup with other Google products?
I don't know heaps about routers. Would love any guidance and recommendations/pros/cons.
Thanks so much in advance!

Is your house cabled up with ethernet cables? If it is, makes a difference - if you can connect the nodes by cable, you don't need to go spend so much. The more expensive mesh routers generally provide a separate (hidden) wifi network solely for the mesh nodes to communicate amongst each other so it doesn't take up bandwidth of your main wifi network that your devices use to communicate with the router (cheap mesh routers lack this additional connection).

But to me, this extra feature becomes redundant if you can connect the nodes by ethernet. Most mesh routers should support cabled connections between the nodes - look for 'ethernet backhaul' support.

    • My house has ethernet cables throughout the place, and I was also looking at a mesh option. Any good routers/notes you can recommend that would utilise these points? Google Nest?

      • With Ethernet throughout the place you are using Ethernet backhaul and not using mesh Wi-Fi. Two or more Nest Wi-Fi routers with Ethernet backhaul is an expensive exercise and only has Wi-Fi 5. How much do you want to spend? How fast is your nbn?

Personally I got a pair of the lower end TP-Links (Deco M4 or M5 or something like that) and it works fine for my purposes, with an ethernet backhaul connecting the nodes. This is Wifi 5 (11ac) - if you want Wifi 6 (11ax) be prepared to pay more.
I found the Nest quite pricey for what it is, but each to their own.

Also note what Twix said about how fast your nbn speed is. Most routers aren't actually able to route so much traffic so quickly. I was able to test a Dlink 11ac router on a 1gbps FTTH connection and it would only route at about 600mbps downloads whereas a direct connection to the modem (no router) was getting 900+mbps. (You can also look at upload speed as uploads don't require the router to do as much - I was getting 900+mbps on uploads through the router). I switched to a Core i3-based pfsense router and my downloads bumped up to 700+ mbps. If you are getting very fast plans, then the processing power your router has and its ability to effectively route high speed connections can impact on what speeds you can achieve - whether you see a practical difference though is another topic.

If your NTD (NBN box) is in the garage, it’s very likely the house has data cabling and data ports throughout.

Is the NTD inside a metal box like “Hills Hub”?

  • Ethernet cable as many fixed position devices as you can eg. desktop computer and TV. Each Deco M5 comes with two Ethernet ports. The Nest Wi-Fi router comes with two Ethernet ports and on the Nest Wi-Fi Point Google removed the Ethernet ports and replaced it with the Google Assistant.

  • One of the most popular router for FTTP is Asus RT-AC68U.
I'm using that now and have no complain.

  • Excellent, thanks for all your suggestions.
I certainly hope the new place is wired up but won't know until I'm there sadly.
Place is only three years old.
No doubt I'll have other questions as we go

  • depends what's your use case and wired layout if it is there.
I'm in a 4 bedder and have wired LAN to each room, FTTP to garage with Netgear R8000. Running this setup for couple years now, serves well for wired devices and wireless devices all across - smart devices, mobiles, iPads, Macbooks, win laptops no problems. if anything the wifi signal drops in the bedroom furthest away but can still get 70mbps on 100/40 connection.

  • Hi all. Ok finally just had inspection before settlement tomorrow arvo. So late I know.
Anyway NBN box looks like this with two Ethernet cables.

There aren't heaps around but one near TV in lounge.
So I just put cables from router into Ethernet port and it should be ok for lounge TV?
I also ordered ASUS - RT-AC68U and will be here tomorrow.
    Cheers all
