Posting eBay Item While Payment on Hold

Just sold a used GPU on eBay to a buyer in another state. Having been messed around a little lately with buyers not following through with payment I'm a little extra cautious. The buyer has made payment this time but the payment is sitting on hold and shows that it won't clear until 24 hours after confirmed delivery, or after 21 days.

How safe am I to post this item? I will of course make sure to send with signature on delivery and take photos of the item before posting.

The item probably sold for 20% more than it would on marketplace and I didn't have to deal with tyre-kickers but I would take a smaller sale price over an amount I could potentially never see.

I've already contacted eBay support, they tried to claim the funds had been released by eBay and that it was a PayPal hold. Went around in circles for a bit before they admitted it was an eBay hold and that they were unable to remove it.

I wouldnt post until i had the funds.

    YMMV

    • But ebay won't pay him until it's delivered. It's a safety thing, ebay/paypal are acting like escrow for the sale. It gives a lot of power to the buyer but that's a cost of doing business.

      • Catch 22

Always insist that, you'll ship as soon as
funds are seen in Vendor's acc't.

It gives Buyer some incentive to pay
directly into Vendor's a/c AND Vendor
can save some pennies, that used to
        go to PayPal.

What % does eBay keep, ie, under
        the new [PayPal-free] regime…?

        PS:

Are there any OTHER & cheaper
        eBay like marketplaces, that can
        Replace eBay (for Sellers)?

  • You shouldn’t worry about payment. In the new payment system, buyer pays eBay and eBay will then pay you (as seller).

If you already get the message to post the item from the system, it should be safe to do so.

You need to be worried if the buyer will claim item not delivered or not as described, then proceed to return item but then you get a potato.
Always insure the postage too (if AusPost).

Always insure the postage too (if AusPost).

Whether to insure with AusPost depends on a risk calculation. It isn't always right to insure it. If you don't get problems often it isn't worth paying for insurance. Plus insurance only covers the item going missing before delivery or damaged in transit, not being delivered but subsequently stolen etc

If the customer signs for it and it's delivered, then Auspost insurance won't help if they claim the box was empty to PayPal.

        • Aus post themselves will help, at least in some situations. i had this recently and aus post helped quite a bit. They showed that the item weight was consistent (ie not an empty box) at all scan locations until it was delivered. They spoke to the manager at the lpo who confirmed he himself put the item in the delivery box or whatevr it was called and he also mentioned the dodgy buyer was "known" to them.. he also said the box definitely wasn't empty at that stage

      • No Sign "drop & leave" of COVID' era
puts packages at risk of theft.

        Some couriers photograph address to
show they dropped if off on right porch
or tossed it over the right fence.

We all need security cameras, now, to
catch a thief walking away with a deliv-
        ered box.

Of course, it someone's [working fr] home
        the risk may be less.

    • New system pretty much removes "item not arrived" or "item not as described" claims which were rampant on PayPal.

Pick up: scan QR code buyer brings with them when they collect.

Delivery: use services with tracking, upload tracking into Ebay.

Unlike PP ebay tends to side on sellers side…. only problem is they take 13.4% for the privilege no matter how buyer pays

      • +1

Do you have any evidence for them being more on the sellers side? It makes more sense to be on the buyers side and keep them happy so they keep coming back. They don't give a crap about small sellers, they're trying to encourage the big ones that dropship from alibaba

    • Not so fast… Consider this case:

An associate sent a 2-part item (New in condition)

Buyer said all was good in each part.

After a few days, she said it stopped working.

(BTW, I gather, that One of the 2 parts (the one
that "suddenly" failed) is the kind of item that is
easy to break, if used incorrectly or dropped in
      shipment.)

Vendor sugg'd the latter as the cause, & adviseed
Buyer to get value of Vendor-paid AusPost insur-
      ance.

Buyer said she'd tossed out all packaging (that
AusPost would likely want to see before paying
      any claim, from vendor's side.)

[Who tossed out maker's box & other packaging?]

eBay sided w/ Buyer & Vendor's insurance had
Zero value, towards resolving the matter.

Buyer got refunded (Vendor did Not get back
either part of the 2-part item. Money lost.)

After hearing all that, I've concluded eBay
is way too limiting, in such cases. Maybe
eBay could have - at least - refunded Ven-
      dor's AusPost insurance cost.

We need, eg, a Network of Local eBay-like
      replacement markets (Like GumTree can
      seem to be).

(Or just GumTree & local Face-to-Face
      trading.)

Paypal/payment holds for 'new accounts' are pretty common.

Its to stop the new account, list/sell a heap of items, take the money and run!

    • Been selling on this account for years.

      • +2

Hmmm then that is a little odd indeed.

Is this the new ebay payment method? I've refused to move over to it. I can't list anything at the moment, but all my old listings are still active.

I hate ebay for making this 'change' sound better, when all these did was increase the fee they take and claim no more paypal fees. Oh really, what about your increased fees!?

        • ebay was the last one to move to managed payments. every other single marketplace you can sell on manages payments. its standard.

It works fine with ebay. dont no why your against it. maybe you dont sell on other market places so weren't aware how others operated as well. But again; its standard.

          • @JCrown9: Well paypal was the 'standard' when ebay owned them ;)

I have no issues with the managed payments side of things, my issue was ebay telling me how great this was to not have any more paypal fees once I move over, but forgetting they ramped up the fees they charge that oh let me check…… yes will cost me MORE than what I was paying before hand with paypal.

So yeah, sorry I'm not 'excited' over the change.

  • It would be minimal difference the fees of there is an increase.

I no my category I pay less (automotive).

What store subscription do you have?

Anyways not much we can do about it. They are just aligning them selves like all their competitors to make sure they get paid first.

Just like you want to get paid first.

An increase is a increase. it is about 1% EXTRA now using ebay payments compared to ebay fees + paypal fees.

The point is, ebay 'forgot' to tell you the total cost was going to be more.

Anyways not much we can do about it

Well there is, don't use them to sell.

They are just aligning them selves like all their competitors to make sure they get paid first.

No issues with this, they could have done that without increasing the total cost of fees though.

Issue is the hidden fee increase, not the payment method.

      • By not using them your giving up 50%* of Australis traffic for online shopping. Hard to argue the point.
Just use them as another channel to sell.

If you stop selling then that buyer will simply buy off another seller. It’s not like they will leave to go find your website (pending product they may search other marketplaces) but then other marketplaces fees are higher than eBay anyways.

So May as well stay on eBay and get a sale rather than a competitor.

        • So May as well stay on eBay and get a sale rather than a competitor.

and that my friends is why ebay has continued to increase the fees…..

Until people say no, enough is enough, ebay will continue to walk over the seller and buyers to get what they want.

Whats next? 15% in fees? Then 20%?

  • Usually funds are on hold if you have been inactive for quite sometime or have sold an expensive item (not sure what the threshold is). There is no issue posting it otherwise funds will never get released.

  • I posted it. I swear to god if I get f**ked here y'all better be ready for my whinge post.
