Broken induction cooktop. Anyone know where to get replacement glass?

So partner just knocked a bottle of wine on to our 8 month old induction cooktop and broke off the corner. Any tips to fix it?
Epoxy maybe? Hot water died yesterday..I'm just stoked right now…

  • Drink offending wine x6

Problem solved (for the day at least)

    • Tomorrow -> broken cook top + dead hot water heater + hangover

And worst of all you've run out of wine…

    • Funny enough, that is the plan currently being executed..and thanks to all the hoarded cashback booze lately, this could go for months!
      Onya legends… cheers!

  • It’ll all better once fixed, pain is only temporary.

Photo? (of the cooktop not the wine) with some reference to size (like a coin) and make and model of top

    • It's a traingle / corner broken off about 12cm edges. I'm thinking epoxy with clear fibreglass tape on the under side to support the epoxy… After my mini bender…see above.

*Model - the Ozbargainer favourite, Whirlpool with 8 zones from TGG deal.

  • Some heat resistant glue perhaps do the job

    • As in epoxy? Probably just outside the main heating area fortunately..

Being induction, it's only the pot/frying pan that gets hot NOT the glass. You could possibly ignore the problem completely if you want! Otherwise epoxy/tape should work fine.

        • The glass does get hot through conduction of the base of the hot pot resting on the glass.

          • @Capo93: You're technically correct, the best kind of correct!

But in the OP's situation this will not make a material difference to performance or repair strategies.

          • @Capo93: Unfortunately this caused the crack to go right across once it cooled down. So while it still works, it is now cracked right through the middle.

  • Does the cooktop still work? ie can you use the opposite side

    • Yeah, no issue with function. Just hard to wipe over with a sharp corner.

Maybe you can sand the edge, if you're worried about using epoxy.

Just be grateful it wasnt you who broke it..

Maybe check your insurance policy, some will cover a glass cooktop under the accidental breakage of glass section of the policy. I've had a few clients able to claim the actual replacement cost of the cooktop and the sparkys labour charges. Its not uncommon for things falling out of the overhead cupboard to break the glass. Might be worth a look.

    • Yeah, it is claimable but the excess vs the cost is very similar. Then your premium goes up the following year etc. The only way to beat that is change insurance provider before you make the claim. But in summary, just going to have to cop it.

  • *Update - Went to repair to today, but the crack is now right through the middle. Must have grown as it cooled down over night.
It still works, but it's aesthetically dead.

  • Merged from Induction Cooktop Cracked in Half (OzBargains Favourite Whirlpool). Anyone Know Where to Get Replacement Glass?

Bought one of these induction cooktops not 12 months ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534950

Bottle of wine knocked on to it while cooking and smashed it (take note people, these break VERY EASILY).

Noticed it wasn't too hard to take the glass off. So should be replaceable. But can't find a decent price on the glass.

Would be happy to replace it with a generic / OEM glass (then wouldn't have to worry about the stupid auto turn off whenever you wipe it feature).

    Cheers

Second wine related cooktop break in the last couple of weeks.

      Must be a new theme..

      • Nah, pretty sure that was me. But they don't have frames around the glass anymore like halogens used to, so will become common. Especially how easy ours broke.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask specifically re glass replacement. Didn't realise it was only held on with heat glue and reasonably easy to replace…but way too $$$ to justify from what I've found.

    • My local Aldi in Sydney is selling them right now (induction cooktops)

      • Had the Aldi one in the old house, was ok. Only 4 zones vs whirlpool with 8
