Looking for a Set Top Box or Similar Device That Does FTA TV, Netflix and Is Wi-Fi

I am looking for advice, am looking to get FTA TV channels and Netflix onto an older TV via HDMI input and it has to be Wi-Fi as no cabling at TV location. This is for an elderly couple, so nothing fancy, simple operation and budget conscious.

Any advice appreciated.

Shame the Vodafone TV was discontinued because it matches your criteria

Could still look to get one from Gumtree/marketplace

Vodafone TV doesn't have a tv tuner but magnificently covers everything else.

A fetch Tv is your best solution

      • Ah yes, it does have a TV tuner…

      • Vodafone TV doesn't have a tv tuner

        Incorrect.

    • Damn, when was it discontinued?

    • Voda TV +1000
Got my mum one and she loves it
Can find everything with the remote as the FTA is in the home screen along with streaming services
Easiest to set up and use that includes FTA
      Plenty on ebay and gumtree

Fetch mini refurb from ebay (often discounts through ebay(+) deals) ($1 on card to setup no ongoing required)
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/312594153551

    • i looked at this at jb hifi but was unsure about the $1 setup and wondered if there was a catch with ongoing charges

      • +1

Catch - might have some bugs every now and then.
I switched my mum from Foxtel the the Fetch Mighty, she loves it. Get the newer model Mini 4K (H671T).

If you want to record, get the Mighty (M616T) instead.

        • thanks for your input.

      • I have Fetch Mighty for recording free to air channels and streaming netflix, youtube. There are no ongoing charges if you don't want to subscribe to additional channel packs for news, movies etc.

  • Chromecast with Google TV.
Standalone media player with a remote, easy to use and has the usual streaming services (Netflix included). Can also stream FTA channels like a regular TV, but requires some effort to setup.

Goes for $99 at JB Hi-Fi and other electronic stores - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/google-chromecast-with-go…
Or, $140 with 6 months of Netflix from Google directly - https://store.google.com/au/config/chromecast_google_tv_netf…

    • How can you get live FTA streaming on these?

      • By downloading FTA TV apps like 7Plus, ABC iview, Nine, Ten Play, SBS on demand.

Not everything is broadcast though on FTA TV signal vs apps, e.g. last cricket series was on FTA TV but not on app as someone else had the web broadcasting rights most likely (Kayo?).

But if you are not fussy the apps do a good job, you can watch most live content and news etc.

All the info is in this whirlpool thread:

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9wj2m4p3?p=180

Search for posts made by "kirt", who detailed the process. It involves downloading a bunch of apps and modifying the Chromecast itself.

The above is different to opening up separate apps for each channel (SBS on demand, ABC iView, etc.)

        • Thanks @silverrat23 I might have to take a look at that because I wanted to avoid having to get cabling put in where I was going to move an older TV.

My stupid Sony smart tv has stopped connecting to wifi recently. Would this work with smart TV so that I don't have to spend over $300 on Sony technician service fees?

      • Could always get a 2-node mesh wifi system? Setup a mesh node near the tv, plug the tv into it via ethernet

        Cheaper than $300

Or yes, the Chromecast would allow you to bypass the entire smart side of the tv. I don't use the TV apps as I have a Shield

Thanks! Just bought Firestick as it's for my parents, might be easier for them to have a remote control and they prob love voice control stuff….

    • "Chromecast with Google TV."

If you want to attempt to listen to media content longer than ~ 15 minutes without a full volume advert suddenly blasting out at double the volume with absolutley no gap, and a requirement to be logged in with a Goolge account [not a requirement of the ealier Chromcasts other than intial set-up], then give this cunning plan for you to pay for an advertising bill-board in your own home a miss.

      • Lol

If you want to attempt to listen to media content longer than ~ 15 minutes without a full volume advert suddenly blasting out at double the volume with absolutley no gap

Never had ads from the Chromecast

and a requirement to be logged in with a Goolge account

You don't have an Android phone?

  • simple operation and budget conscious.

How much lag when they navigate the menu can they cope?

What is simple to them and what is the budget?

Amazon fire stick is cheap, can install just bout most FTA app but it is laggy to my standard and typing using on screen keyboard is not that smooth.

Google Chromecast is budget too, and I find using apps on phone to cast is simpler then typing on screen, but is that simple to them?

Apple TV / Google TV are probably good candidates for simple operation but may not be budget?

    Unsure about roku

  • Recently got a Firestick, on a run out deal ($49 delivered). Really happy with it, using it to access Netflix, Prime and free to air, for catch up. HDMI and WiFi as OP needs.

  • Be aware that some free to air tv isn’t available using streaming services.

It comes down the tv rights. I know sometimes sport such as Supercars isn’t available.

I've had zero issues with my NVidia Shield, if that would fit your criteria requirements. Its a awesome piece of kit, a touch over $300AU if more serves me correctly. It does far more than I need it to do, and that may be the case for you also. Hadn't noticed anyone else mention it so far.
    Good luck.

    • The Shield has a TV tuner?

  • My apologies…..hadn't properly read request is for elderly couple - my bad!!
That said, it's not so very complicated to use, just cost plus too much for their needs, I suspect. Apologies.
