Pet GPS / Bluetooth tracker

Looking for peoples advise regarding GPS / Bluetooth pet trackers.

I've just moved to an apartment and the cat is new to the area. I don't feel comfortable letting him outside with out a tracker as I know he tends to go on long walks. At least this way I can find him if he doesn't come home.

Open to any solutions people have / experience using trackers

Tile, maybe? Samsung Smarttags or Apple airtags?

    https://www.thetileapp.com/en-au/blog/pet-tracker

It's a tracker meant to find lost items like keys, wallets etc. but might have a use to keep of your pet's locations. Do note that it uses bluetooth so the range is fairly short and none of the tile, samsung or apple airtags products have GPS connectivity and will rely on crowdsource information to report it's location.

There are GPS pet trackers like these however these trackers need a SIM card inserted for mobile data connectivity and you may also need to pay a monthly subscription service on top.

    • I had Tiles on my cats and they were useless. They never showed the right locations. Once one of them was under the garage 10m from the house and it showed her on the other side of the highway (past ~100m of driveway, was a country area) causing massive panic for a good hour trying to find her

Your only option really is the Apple Airtag because all the other tags just don't work the same… ie, with the Airtag, other peoples iphones will pick up the signal and geotag it rather than just your own phone. It's the next best thing from sim-card tracking.

      Errr

with the Airtag, other peoples iphones will pick up the signal and geotag it rather than just your own phone

So the same as the Tile then? Other Tile users pickup the signal and report the location.

You know the Apple Airtag is basically a ripped off Tile?

      • So the same as the Tile then? … You know the Apple Airtag is basically a ripped off Tile?

Yes, but with a key difference:

So the same as the Tile then? Other Tile users pickup the signal and report the location.

Other Tile users signal and report the location

with the Airtag, other peoples iphones will pick up the signal and geotag it

Other iPhone users signal and report the location

The number of iPhone users is much greater than the number of Tile App users.

    Better be neutered.

    • He is ?

  • Airtags are the way to go, especially if you have an iPhone

  • The people saying airtags, they're going to be way too big for a cat. Especially adding a holder on as well.

  • Thanks for those suggesting the airtag, after a bit of investigating definately looks like the best way to go. Not ideal, as Quantumcat said it is a little big but I think we'll be able to make it work and definately better than nothing

he tends to go on long walks

you mean he tends to go and kill natural wildlife, contributing to the decline of native species in Australia and if not neutered, creating communities of stray kittens?

    Cool.

  • Those Bluetooth tiles/Airtags have limited range, and are dependent on people being close by. I'd go for something cheaper that uses 3G:

Of course you'll need to do your research to make sure the right bands are supported for your mobile network, and read the reviews to filter out the junk.

  • OP, make sure your cat is legally allowed to be off leash as some councils may fine you and/or put it to sleep. Also, microchip is up to date otherwise someone may "adopt" your cat.

  • I think OP should join the Cotton Ball Cat Club .
