What price do you pay at the gym?

Looking at maybe joining a gym (haven't joined one on a contract before, just trials and offers), and would like to know how much people are paying out there?

  • Whether they had a joining fee, administration fee, and of course the weekly, fortnightly or monthly fee, and any other type of fee they charge!!?
  • How long the contract is/was (fixed term, or pay as you go?)
  • And also what services are offered at their gym, such as classes, 24/7, sauna, pool, as these might make a difference?

It would be great to get an idea at to what prices people are paying and are available (as prices seem to be mostly negotiable) so as to not get ripped off!!

  • YMCA gym
    $27.50 fortnightly / $55 month
    no joining fee
    no contract
    pool, gym, sauna. (usual)

    • I totally disagree, they DO charge joining fees as well as you enter in a contract (personal experience) unless you got a special deal, also please state where?

      • Have to partially disagree with you there Dealhunt, I joined up at YMCA Eltham (Melbourne) a couple of years ago, and was hit with a joining fee (from memory it was pretty small though, only about $40ish), but I'm not on a contract. I pay by the fortnight $34.10 but can cancel anytime.

If you do join a YMCA with a friend, you get a "family & friends" discount of 20% for the both of you; only catch is that you have to be direct debited from the same account.

        • Yes I believe that but things have changed now, I can't for now tell which YMCA because there is a complaint running and I don't want to give any spot to the dodgy guys.

They will want you to join with a contract, even a 3 month contract will rip you off because from contract you have to give one month notice it means the contract will be 4 months! lol

      • Dealhunt, there are regular promotions and I can confirm that it is possible to join without a sign up fee or a fixed term.

  • do you travel much (like inter state, overseas) and like to gym while away?
do you work or go to uni or travel around sydney alot

why i ask is while fitness first is more expensive and prolly lock u into a contract (1 year)
u can go to any gyms (as long as its not platium and theres not many) in NSW, inter state and even overseas

they have the most gyms around the place (others are starting to get more though)

not sure what current membership costs, and also what the joining fee is
they usually have sign up friend deals, so find a friend that has membership!
i pay 30 a fortnight, but i use the gym in the city, local, when i'm in meblourne and sometimes overseas in hong kong

also they have "bring a freind on the weekend" for free vouchers (print as many as u want)

  • My GF pays $20 per week at Fitness FIrst, plus a joining fee I think. Depends how many facilities you want. They have classes etc, but if you just want basic stuff, there are Jetts which is only half the price and are 24/7. You get in with a swipe card, but they only have a couple of most things. No contract. Virgin have well equipped gyms, but are pretty pricey. No contract. But a joining fee.

  • $11 per week including debit fees at GoHealth

  • +1

Jetts, about $21 per fortnight. Noticably cheaper if you go by the 6 month or 12 month. Also has the ability to guest in other Jetts outlets.

      I'm such a tight-arse that my wallet is like a black hole…

I'm with Jetts as well, best deal I know of!

  • @realsniper09 be aware that some (maybe many) gyms will try to rip you off for sure!
Here is a long and informative thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/4562

Don't enter in any contracts, if you do, then don't come back here and CRY :D
Be aware of DebitSuccess, when you see their name just run away!

  • the best time to get your membership is in the last few days of the month as the sales reps are trying to hit targets and will discount heavily.

    • It wasn't my case, I was hit very hard!!

  • im with jetts, 24 hour access not bad.
i have a 3 day guest pass if your interested. but i think alot of gyms offer a trial period if you enquire.

  • $6 per week at work gym

    • But two months before was paying $28.50 per fortnight at Goodlife Parra

Hey goto ebay and buy a weight bench, i bought a new china one for $120, it is alright.

Don't waste money at the gym.

I do free weights, I follow the matrix system. I also take my dog to the park and jog around it several times.

Gym is for posers and you don't have to worry about dealers trying to sell you roids in the carpark and lockers.

    • haha not all people live in a house or have enough room to put everything in.

  • Hmm I join Jett's paying $6.60 a week now that's a bargain ;)

  • Uni gym, $6/week. Includes pool, courts etc as well

  • A real Ozbargainer would find a friend who lives in townhouses/flats that have a gym and just come over to visit when needing some exercise.

  • There's some good deals in the entertainment book. I'm with equilibrium and get a free 3 month membership with my 3 month membership. They are happy to roll them together (ie 6 month membership for 3 month cost).

  • $50 per calendar year
Local golf club/RSL gym (really small and unstaffed — but open 7 days from 8am to 9pm)
