Data Analytics Industry

Hi all, I was thinking of studying further to broaden my skill set. More likely a short course like General assembly data analytics course. Is this enough to get into a data analyst role or do I need to get a uni degree?

Learn advance excel, python,SQL and some visualisation using power bi or tableau.. ….prepare portfolio …upload it and market yourself as fresh data analyst….

What does your analysis tell you?

Not enough data to form a definitive answer.

        No no no.

IRL, you make up the assumptions on the unknown (crystal ball method) so that it can look legit. Otherwise the industry will collapse on itself…

You also need to develop the aptitude to see how to present the data. You won't be asked to graph X vs Y, but you will have to think what to graph, and how to reduce the data.

And then, sell your trend findings to ill informed audience, like Donald Trump

Courses and degrees show you techniques, but will rely on your application of those to stay in your analyst role.

Yes, it's enough. However, expect to be paid decently less than someone who has a degree until you have a few years experience under your belt at which point degree means nothing.

There are two ways to get into data analytics.

One is via actuarial courses, like probability, regression, anova, etc.

The other is via computer science courses. Learn programming, machine learning, etc.

That's how you learn. How you get a job is another story. To get any job, you need knowledge and/or experience. Knowledge is often proven by certification, and experience by… Experience.

If at this point you still don't know how to use advanced Excel or sql, then I really kindly suggest a different career.

      Not true…

Lots of consultants I've worked with have neither knowledge nor experience, but had learnt how to give you the perception they did…

  • I work alongside a BA and DA in my role and the requirements for them to enter the role were quite steep.

If either was to leave, we'd want someone who not only fits in well with the current team but is also equally qualified and experienced.
