Saw this on the BIG W site. The prices keep dropping. Would be a good 2nd TV or for the bedroom.

The specs on the site were a bit light on in detail, such as no hz stated- but here's what was said:
Sku Code
BIGW_8239524

Colour: Black

product Height (CM)12.28
Product Length (CM)76.9
Product Weight (KG)18.2
Product Width (CM)17.3
Brightness 400cd/m2
Digital Tuner
HDMI Inputs
Response Time6.5ms
Screen Definition High Definition
Screen Resolution1920 x 1080
Screen Size (Inch)42
Tuner Type DigitalHD
Viewing Angle (Degrees)178

I ended up buying one with the hope it will serve a secondary role- at that price with low delivery ($15 to Newcastle) I figure you can't go too wrong. BigW have a good return policy and paying with AMEX gets a year exra warranty.

    good find :)

  • +4

Don't forget to extend the warranty!
"BigW Protection Plan for $200.00-$499.99 Electrical Items", SKU Code BIGW_8098832 (additional 2 year warranty): $29.94

    • +8

At this rate $29.94 will get you a replacement in 3 years time…

    • +1

      2 years for $30 - THAT is a bargain

I am So tempted to grab this. Our 32" AWA LCD has been really good, but it's only 720p rather than full HD (not that it really matters on a 32").

How can I justify moving the 32" to the bedroom, and adding this 42" in the (tiny) loungeroom instead? LOL

      • +3

Of course you can justify it. 10 inches more in the lounge room and 32 inches in the bedroom is sufficient. insert girth jokes here.

  • Great price but no idea if the TV is garbage or not. No mention of Hz.

  • +4

For a little bit more I'd go for the Toshiba 42" 100hz LCD for $448: http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/televisions/lcd-tv/bpnBIG…
I know its not led but Toshiba is much better brand compared to AWA but cannot say for sure as never owned an AWA product what you guys think?

    • +1

      Hitachi?

      • +7

oops forgot to take my meds again sorry guys I meant Hitachi. Was Looking at a Toshiba and epic failed by confusing them up. At least they are japanese brands lol

        • hitachi is not the original hitachi. name rights or some crap like that.

        • what panel is that hitachi

    • When you look at the user manual for that Hitachi, it only says 24Hz/50Hz/60Hz. I think the 100Hz on the bigw website is wrong.

    • AWA would be the LG panel (as with every other cheapie)

    • +1

It's $398 now if you were still looking at it?

  • -1

you might wanna say it's FHD 1,080p

    makes all the difference

if it was just HD its no bargain especially since its a crap AWA - its just a china set with the AWA badge

    • +3

you might wanna say it's FHD 1,080p

What part of the title (which says "Awa 42" 106cm Full HD LED LCD TV") are you having trouble reading?

      • well it could be 1080i?

        • 1080i/720p is "HD", not "Full HD"

        • +1

Don't think there have been any 1080i but not p TVs made in the last 5 years? :o

        • yes it has been about 6 years since i bought a tv.
what about 1080p24, do all 'full hd' tvs support that?

      • +1

Originally the title only stated HD

  • +1

    is it 100hz??

    • +4

Of course not - if it was, they'd make a point of mentioning it.

    • Model Number MHDV4211-03 if that helps.

      • It helped…..

maybe just maybe, there's a possibility that the OP changed his title after he read my post.

        Just puttin' it out there!

the post didn't start a minute before you read it…

        • I think you pulled a thread. Need to speak to to the (Deli) Llama.

  • Anyone know if it's available in store as well? I was thinking about getting one tomorrow morning for a budget home theatre.

    • Yep its instore too, you can check stock on the page

I'm looking for a cheap TV right now and I found this…

$349 Vivo 43" High Definition Plasma TV NOT FULL HD
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GE6818/high-definition-plasm…

It's plasma, and only 1024*768 but it is $50 cheaper with free delivery if people want something cheaper…

    • +1

thats a deal on its own!

    • Using this for anything besides Digital TV and DVD's is a bad idea.

Blurays and PC will look bad.

      • Actually that might not be the case. I don't use AWA but bought a 42" Pangoo FullHD LCD TV for $385 some months back as a computer monitor. Can't be happier. I use it to surf, do some work and watch movies. Just my 2cents worth.

        • +1

your happy with 1024x768 as a PC monitor?

          ok… have fun with that.

Edit: You do realise I'm responding to the Vivo TV mentioned, not what the OP posted?

    • +2

Description says "response time of 11ms"…..surely that can't be correct for a plasma? Please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, plasma response times are less than 1 millisecond, regardless of the brand.

      • +2

pretty sure plasma technology does not have a response time at all. Instant

      • It's actually 6.5ms

    • please correct me if I'm wrong but 1024 x 768 works out to be a 4:3 ratio to me.

What happens when you put that resolution in a screen that's built to a 16:9 ratio?

      • It can handle stuff like 1280x720, but the native resolution is 1024x768.

So I'm sure you can guess what happens and how it looks…

Using anything over HDMI looks the worst though, not sure why.

    Delivery:
    $15 Regional (as OP states)
$40 Sydney Metro (incl. Wollongong)? Driver Stress costs you $25 extra?

  • How much power it consume per year ???

    • +1

      power per year, thats easy…
      60Whx24 hours x 365 days = 525.6KWh

      :>

      • i aint see that 60Wh in the description. Where did you get that number ?

        • instruction manual somewhere

  • This is the review from bigw site:

    The good -
6 star energy rating , 3 year factory warranty plus extra 2 years for under $30 , it is LED backlighted , not just "edge LED" and has terrific picture quality , setup was easy , all stations found after a few minutes .
    The price - $498 for a full hd LED LCD with ( did I mention ? ) 3 year factory warranty .
Refresh rate is good , I have yet to see any "staggering" of fast motion shots , this is a current generation TV and it shows.
The not quite so good -
EPG function is rather limited but as I'll be using mine in conjunction with a STB / PVR so I can record , I'll simply use the EPG on it .
Sound quality is entirely adequate but not great , it lacks the bass notes and volume to fill a larger room so I will shortly run mine through the stereo . I won't often use the stereo on TV but for DVD's I will.
    Overall -
I'm very happy with it , it hasn't yet stood the test of time but I have 5 years warranty !
This is good value for money.

And its fake too! Nice find.

      • Aside from it being on the Big W website, what reason do you have to believe that it's fake?

        • Written by a writer…

TBH im not sure why i think i know this is fake, maybe its the attention to detail, or the fact that its packed full of features being mentioned. I saw an article a while back that compared fake and real reviews, and fake reviews are really tricky.

It mentioned the obvious flaws that you would expect in a cheaper system, then it excuses them…

EPG function is rather limited but as I'll be using mine in conjunction with a STB / PVR so I can record.

i don't think normal people talk like this, its so stupidly optimistic (like me huh?).

        • +1

          @imaximax1

Written by someone in their 50's, not their 20's. If it had a few OMG's would it be more believable?

        • fair point, but yes it might.

Also, i dont think it was written by someone in their fifties (assuming its not fake, which i'm almost certain it is).

          Also…..

  • +1

I know it's a dollar more expensive, but how do you think http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/plasma-lcd-tvs/lcd%20tv/soniq… compares with this AWA in terms of picture quality?

    • i'm curious too.

is 6.5ms good? i'm looking to hook up my ps3 and want a fast response rate, no tearing, etc.

  • Good price. I wouldn't touch that brand with a 10ft pole, but that's just me.

  • Edit: Double post, my bad.

  • Are they meant to be grainy? I went in and had a look at one today.

    • Big W dont know or care to know how to setup their TV's properly. they use composite cables and leave them on factory settings. im sure with a bit of work it would produce a decent picture.

  • "BigW have a good return policy and paying with AMEX gets a year exra warranty."

Can someone please explain how paying with AMEX gets you an extra year's warranty???

    • A benefit of the card, just like some others offer free travel insurance.

  • Well, I ended up buying one of these. I'm no expert with TVs, but it's certainly one of the better efforts I've seen from the cheaper brands. Only issue I've had so far is trying to get 1:1 pixel mapping when hooked up to my PC, but apart from that I'm quite pleased.

    • With the Bauhn I bought last year I found that you needed to go into factory settings and set 1:1 pixel mapping from there; it wasn't available to consumers at all.

It might be worth finding the password to access factory settings from the internet somewhere.

  • Be warned - AWA is shite.
I bought one last year and returned in a few days. The TV guide was virtually non-existent, while our Panasonic picked up everyshow. Faded corners, very poor picture quality. Told my mum to buy (before I found out is was crap). Hers had to be returned for repair. Sister in law bought one (without asking my opinion), took it back for refund due to various issues.

Be warned. Spend a bit extra and get a Samsung, LG, Panasonic etc.
You get what you pay for.

    • +1

This is the problem, I've had the opposite experience, my old AWA 42" LCD is still powering away with beautiful image quality! I paid $999 when my buddy paid nearly twice that for a brand name 32" set!

What a lot of you guys don't realise is that AWA is not a live brand, it's a 'zombie' brand. They often source each different model from different Chinese or Korean manufacturers, most likely whoever is cheapest & then they slap a badge on it. Same goes for Rank Arena, Palsonic, Hitachi et.al. Some models will be great, some will be mediocre.

Therefore, you can't just say "AWA is shite", because it's not necessarily true. Google around a bit, some of the big boys have had some shocking models too! Some 'zombie' models will be better than others…and when you're paying ~50% of the price of an equivalent big brand name, with a generous return policy & warranty to back you up, then if you're on a budget it's most certainly worth a punt!

  • 3 Year warranty on this, old man just grabbed one for his house, $29.94 or something for another 2 years, $430 not bad for a 5 year warrantied tv

  • if its not 100hz then its not worth getting, tv prices dropping by the day plenty of name brands for only slightly more at the moment

    • if its not 100hz then its not worth getting

Ok nubz, care to back that nonsense up with something better than marketing gobbledegook? ;)

tv prices dropping by the day plenty of name brands for only slightly more at the moment

Arguably true, however I would like to know where else you've seen an LED backlit 42" full HD set for anywhere near under $400?

      • +1

"Arguably true, however I would like to know where else you've seen an LED backlit 42" full HD set for anywhere near under $400?"

        …or a 3 year warranty!
