PS5 Yay OR Nay? Stock Is Incoming!

Hey,

I've been called by a gentleman at a retail store who had my name down.

He told me I could come in and put down $50, and they've got allocation coming in 1-2 weeks.
I basically only play COD Warzone.

Is it true an updated model is out next year? I know it's silly, but the PS4 PRO & PS5 run Warzone pretty similarly from what I understand at the moment.

I'm not desperate for the unit, but I do have $750 in vouchers for this store.

Store is JB-HI if it helps anyone.

Thanks

I highly doubt a new model would come out next year, there's always someone saying a new model is coming out whether it be for PS or even Xbox

    • +4

Or the fabled "Nintendo Switch Pro" always just around the corner

      • +2

        Hows the KFC one going?

Don't fall into the trap of waiting for the next one, because someone, somewhere said something about the release of a new model. Will Sony release a new version? Hell yes. They will follow their own pattern, ps5 then ps5 pro. Will it be next year, maybe, maybe not, but if you wait, next year is between 7 months (January) to 19 months away (if they release one for Christmas 2022 season), and if you wait that long, and they finally release the ps5 pro, rumors will start up about the ps6 release date….

In other words, don't wait to buy on speculation what you can enjoy now.

The rumors you have been hearing are not for the ps5 pro, they are for the ps5 with modified chips, so they can finally start producing the numbers needed during the mass chipset shortage the entire world is going through. Will it be more powerful, who knows… All i know is, having one is better than waiting for the next model.

    • Talking about the new version. I prefer the slim one. Because currently the size and shape are far bigger for my room/ space.

      • It's big because of reducing heat and better air flow in the case same as any PC. It's also more quieter. It might get smaller but you will sacrifice noise and heat/performance.

Usually when I have gentleman callers they don't offer me deals on a PS5

  • +3

Generally an updated model comes out around halfway through the console's lifespan, I would expect a revision 3-4 years after the initial release

  • +4

The rumored 2022 update will just be a hardware revision, so just an update to the launch model. Slimline consoles will come later down the track.

  • Awesome, thank you! I guess I'm better off grabbing it, and selling my PS4 PRO while it's worth something.

  • +10

Grab it now mate. The rumoured revision is purely to help Sony deal with manufacturing issues. There won’t be any noticeable change on that revision to the user. A ps5 pro is possible at some point but that won’t be for at least a few years.

  • +1

Is it true an updated model is out next year?

Unlikely but always possible. They haven't mentioned anything about an updated model, only potential consideration for an updated APU chip to increase yields.

Warzone runs so much better on PS5 than PS4. I was coming from the OG PS4 to the PS5, though - not from a PS4 Pro. I'd recommend jumping on it ASAP

  • Doubt a pro version will come out soon. I mean games are still getting optimised for next gen and there's only a few games built for next gen right now.

The controller is also a consideration. I believe COD supports the adaptive triggers and new haptic feedback.

    • Yeah, I wanna get back paddles!

I got a PS5 2-3 weeks ago. I just called my local EB games and they had some in stock. I paid retail.

Sony is talking about changing the architecture to make it easier for them (actually TSMC) to manufacture. I think Apple is the main user of 5nm capacity so Sony might try to make use of some of that to release a PS5 Pro however that would probably be 2-3 years away because at the moment it's purely an idea.

The PS5 is a good system but there aren't many PS5 only games available for the system yet. While you are waiting to get one you can purchase accessories (2nd DualSense controller, charging stand etc.) while these items pop up on sale. Also make sure you are logging into PS+ via the App and claiming the PS5 games. Also stock up on discounted PS4 games that have free PS5 upgrades. Returnal is probably the first PS5 exclusive that people are getting excited about.

Many third party developers haven't really migrated across to the new technology yet, for example many games are made on the Unreal 4 engine. The Unreal 5 engine which will target next gen consoles isn't released to developers yet.

Honestly, The XBox X is better equipped for ray tracing so consider that console as well. You can always purchase a digital edition of the PS5 once they are more readily available to download and play PS5 exclusive games.

My point is most of the games you will be playing on your PS5 for the next year or two will be optimized PS4 games. You aren't missing that much not having a PS5 at the moment. You can take the time to purchase PS5 games and accessories ready for when you can get a PS5. Plus if they release a PS5 Pro then I'll sell you my PS5.

    • I have to work out which PS4 games transfer over, because I have 20+.

I have PS plus, I didn't think about setting it up to get the PS5 GAMES! FML!!! When's the next roll over?

    • Do you find there's a big difference ps5 vs PS4 pro (if you had one). I'm only playing PS4 games and I'm debating whether it's worth the extra $500 or so for better resolution. The other big selling point for me was the controller but only a few games (PS4) actually use it.

      • Yes there's a huge difference in performance with more and more PS4 games being patched with higher res/FPS (Last of Us 2 got an update yesterday).

Also much much quieter and tons of great free PS4 and PS5 games on PS+ every month. PS5 games also getting cheaper now with sales events one after the other.

Well worth it and consider trading in PS4 Pro for one. EB Games gave you 40% off a PS5 at launch, see if they still do.

        • Thanks for the reply, I don't use PS+ either haha. I still have quite a backlog of PS4 games I want to play but I saw the list and maybe only 2-3 of them are on there and not many ps5 games interest me rn. As you can tell, I'm not a heavy gamer.

I went to EB today and they said they're taking pre-orders for mid June to early July. I'll see if I can grab one, thanks :)

@[Deactivated]: These are the PS+ freebies over last few months:-

            • May: Battlefield V, Stranded Deep, Wreckfest: Drive Hard. Die Last (PS5).
            • April: Days Gone, Oddworld: Soulstorm (PS5), and Zombie Army 4: Dead War
            • March: Final Fantasy VII Remake, Maquette (PS5), Remnant: From the Ashes and Farpoint
            • Feb: Destruction AllStars (PS5), Control: Ultimate Edition (PS5) and Concrete Genie
            • Jan: Maneater (PS5), Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall

Not to mention the PS5 PS+ Collection ones too:-

            From Worldwide Studios:

            • Bloodborne
            • Days Gone
            • Detroit: Become Human
            • God of War
            • Infamous Second Son
            • Ratchet and Clank
            • The Last Guardian
            • The Last of Us Remastered
            • Until Dawn
            • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

            From third-party publishers and developers:

            • Batman: Arkham Knight
            • Battlefield 1
            • Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles Edition
            • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
            • Fallout 4
            • Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition
            • Monster Hunter: World
            • Mortal Kombat X
            • Persona 5
            • Resident Evil 7 biohazard
      • I mainly play Warzone, picking up my PS5 later today.
I already paid for Gift Cards in December, so it's cost me $608-610 for the PS5.

I figure I can still get $300-350 for the PS4 PRO and I paid $330 last match for it from someone on Market place.

I do have alot of games I haven't played, and have to work out which I can use and which I have to sell.

        • Awesome, enjoy! Let me know how it is and if it's that much better than ps4 pro. Other than cost, it's a bit of a hassle to have to pre-order and sell my console.

    • My point is most of the games you will be playing on your PS5 for the next year or two will be optimized PS4 games. You aren't missing that much not having a PS5

Thanks, this really helped a lot. I can see new stock is finally available for purchase at some stores but despite how much I wanted one at launch I feel like the hype has worn off. I'm still going thru my backlog of Ps4 games and have no use to upgrade. Graphics and frame rate never bother me, the Ps4 is almost flawless on most games anyway.

Guess I'll wait until a Christmas sale to finally upgrade. Until then, I feel like I can spend the $800 much better.

      • I doubt these go on sale til sometime in 2022. I feel like considering they can't even keep up with stock levels, I doubt it'll go on sale.

I think atm, you can still get $300-350 for a PS4 PRO. I paid $330 last year, so it's a good time to sell and alot of games from PS4 can be played on my PS5.

        • I doubt anyone will buy a second hand PS4 for that much. I think the stores have them brand new/refurbished at that price. Those would be a hard sell, let alone a second hand one.

I bought mine off Gumtree last year for $200 (old one broke, so I didn't want to wait for the Ps5 to be able to play my games).

          • +1

            @SlavOz: $200 for a PS4 PRO? I doubt that!

  • +1

The next COD releasing this year will only be available on PS5/X Series/PC.

There are also a few PS5 only games like DMC5 DE, Spider-Man remastered, Demons Souls, Returnal, and next month Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart alongside more games coming and more A and AA games already available like Destruction All-Stars and others.

Every PS4 Enhanced game on PS5 runs better obviously, going back to 30fps from 60fps it's a big letdown for some people. But the PS5 is way better than the PS4 not only in graphic details, resolution, and fps.

Also, you have adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and the games run faster than PS4. I reckon from next year or the end of this one, we will start to see different experiences with upcoming games like GT7, Horizon Forbidden West, and GOW: Ragnarok alongside PSVR2.

The future looks exciting for the PS5, you should try it ASAP.

    • If Elden Ring was Ps5 only, I'd sell my left arm to get one. Alas, it's coking out on Ps4 so I'm content.

I can't remember what the Ps4 was like on launch, but looking at the ps5 today, it's hard to justify the purchase unless you're an elite gamer who's addicted to the newest and greatest. The number of titles is just too low for now.

  • While we're here.

Is there back paddles available for PS5 yet?

What external HDs are suitable for storage of games?

    Thanks

    • +1

No back paddles yet but Scuf have some in the making. General consensus is they make expensive low quality stuff though look pretty.

Any USB 3.0 external HDD or SSD works to play PS4 games and transfer PS5 games for storage (NOT playback).

Just picked up a "pre-order" from JB - Disc version.

Put my name down about three or fours weeks ago and got a call Tuesday to go in and put $50 down for it with advice it should be in within the next week.
Got a call this morning to say it was in so went and picked it up at lunch time.

Had a couple of hundred in 15% off "Him" and "Her" gift cards from the deal a few months back.

Now I am questioning if I really should have got this, money probably could have been spent elsewhere.

I don't play a lot of games - mainly things like Gran Turismo, The Crew, Dirt and Colin McRea Rally and when I do, not a lot of time to play.
Don't even remember the last time I played anything - might be a few years :)

Have been tossing up if to get an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield Pro so will probably end up using this more as a streaming device for things like Disney+ and Prime through it. TV can do Netflix already.

I do have the original Playstation, a PSOne, PS2, PS3 and there are 2x PS4's in the house (neither of which are mine) so getting the 5 kinda goes along with the collection :)

What games do people suggest for the PS5?

    • +1

Demon Souls is probably the best game on the system, in terms of exclusive titles. I haven't played it yet though

  • Is the PS5 game for PS PLUS worth it? I have PS PLUS membership, just unsure if I should sign up for May or wait til June.

  • FYI all i picked up a PS5 disc over the counter at JB. Just ask if there is any cancelled preorders.
