I've been keeping an eye on these for a while, and this seemed like a solid price for the specification.
Some will prefer the 4k display, I'd rather FHD+ with better battery life, and will appreciate the 16:10 ratio.

  • https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-laptop/s… is pretty decent for the standard XPS too.

    $1500 before cashback for the 16gb / 512 .

    • keep in mind the 9305 has a different aspect ratio and worse screen to body ratio than the 9310

Yeah it is the older model with the chin, the new 13 is way more expensive for the same specs

        • Yeah the chin is probably what kills the screen/body ratio. It's actually newer but was targeted at China originally as a low cost model according to https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-13-9305-goes-global-C…

@martyn: Oh weird, consider me corrected then. I assumed it was the older chassis updated with 11th gen parts. Oddly it even has an extra USB C.

  • Not a very informed individual about laptops so would appreciate someone much more smarter than me to explain how this compares to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 (Part Number: 20XXS02700) retailing for sub $2,200 on Lenovo student portal. To me, it seems on par spec wise but of course the Lenovo is chunkier with more ports etc.

    Anyone?

    • They're pretty similar but this is a 2 in 1, so good for taking notes with a stylus/ drawing etc

      • +1 they are very similar. The Lenovo has a slightly bigger screen and the Dell probably weighs more. The Dell has vapour chamber cooling which might help it run cooler than Lenovo - for this level of detail you would need to look online at very in depth reviews etc. I have the non 2-in-1 version of the Dell and it gets pretty hot.

      • Thanks heaps!

  • Pen appears to be included. Can anyone who owns this beast confirm?

  • Hmm, this or last year's Acer Spin 5 which is $1,700 on Amazon US.

Specs are pretty similar besides a newer CPU on the Dell. Screen is better on the Acer, unless you pay for the 4K screen.

Both have 2xThunderbolt ports (TB3 for Acer and TB4 for Dell, although TB4 only gives compatibility with 8K displays, right?)

    • This is overall better as the actual screen quality and colors will be better on the dell. It also offers better screen to body ratio

I'm a dell onsite tech, I wouldn't recommend these, if you have any issue with the fans/heatsink, any ports, cpu or gpu instability or any other mainboard issue you lose your ssd when the techs replace the mainboard. Dell does not have a procedure for getting data off the old mainboard like Apple does so you're on your own. Other than that major flaw this is actually quite a nice machine, though I've replaced a few keyboards in them as the fancy thin keyboard seems pretty weak.

    • Is the SSD soldered on?

      • It's part of the mainboard, every part I mentioned above is part of the mainboard and can't be replaced individually. That means if your fans start rattling or buzzing you will need to backup your data and start with a fresh install after service.

        • Does this only apply to the 2 in 1? Or does this go for both the regular 9305 and 9310?

Edit: In the specs of the regular models it doesn't specify "onboard". Looks like they aren't soldered.

  • The code doesn't appear to work?

I was having the same issue, until I realised that I didn't select windows 10 Pro, with that selected the code works :)
