Some more great classics for free - again, maybe with the exception of Heidi I would say these are books everyone should read at least once.
All books are highly rated and free at the time of posting.
I have also manually checked all links and have looked for free alternative editions of the books if the version on the Australian store was not free in the US store (see Moby Dick and Treasure Island).

  • Thanks man. as it turned out I was watching a video on the Essex when I saw your post. Perfect timing :)

Also in case anyone misses out from dealbot's comment with a list of free books.

    • +2

Yeah, I always check every link and try to find a free alternative (if necessary) manually rather than running scripts. A lot more work but worth it to make sure the people with an US account do not miss out.
Have a lovely night and enjoy all the reading. ;-)

  • Search for “AmazonClassics edition”. You will get a few more free one. Can pay extra 2.99 for audible version

    • Agreed. These titles are in the public domain and also available free from Gutenberg or from your local e-library.

      • Thousands of other books (and hundreds of videogames) are available from your local e-library/library, too but not really the same thing.
The books at PG often look indexing, and adequate formatting. Plus people like all their books in one place, including the ones you could get at PG.

        • Wasn’t bugging anyone. Just noticed there are others also free in case anyone else is interested. I bought a few classics for the kids to read.

          • @Mahalo: I know. I did not take it that way either. I hope you get the kids to read - absolutely worth it and they will thank you later. :-)

        • To be fair, Project Gutenberg has Kindle versions, formatted with chapters, plus formats for other e-readers and phones and tablets too. And the books are free 100% of the time, so in that sense it never needs a daily post to promote a 'deal' of a public domain book. (Or rather, it's difficult to justify that there's ever a charge for any of these books in digital format on Amazon.) If folk want these public domain books, they can fill their boots around the clock at Project Gutenberg without the bait and switch price changes.

Here are their top downloaded books and authors, it's a good list https://www.gutenberg.org/browse/scores/top

          • @kees2000: I believe you but my experience has been soo different. All the books I have ever chosen and downloaded had no formatting whatsoever.
Plus, it is an additional source. I have trouble enough keeping track of all my gaming libraries and I prefer to not be dragged into the same situation with books or any other media as well. ;-)

        • Gutenberg has the Kindle Magic Catalog, which, once sent to your Kindle (or downloaded via the Kindle browser), will fetch the books, in Kindle format, to the device just by clicking a link in the catalog.

          http://www.freekindlebooks.org/MagicCatalog/magiccatalog.htm…

It’s a quick way of getting access to tens of thousands of free (and legal) books on your device.

  • Thanks OP. Great Expectations is free too.

Ive never really understood why the great gatsby is so highly rated as the quintessential American novel when The Grapes of Wrath gets overlooked by many. I always found gatsby a shallow figure, guess the yanks love that thou lol

    • The movie with Di Caprio was actually better than I expected. I will have a look at the Grapes of Wrath now - thanks to you. Much appreciated.

      • Fyi, as listed here elsewhere , Walden and the duty of civil disobedience by the great Thoreau always free in these collections . Not fictional escapism but entertaining insights into American culture, at another level to the Gatsby.

        • Read Walden, actually in school. Love Thoreau.

    • I think you're supposed to find Gatsby shallow as a character, the interpretation I like is that the book shows us through Gatsby how hollow the American dream / materialism is but also wants us to empathise with the tragedy of those who chase it.

  • Moby Dick

does it tell you the cure?

The green light is waiting for me. Thanks
