    Copyright-expired books are always free:

    https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/5230

But this deal is not really "free" because it comes DRM-encumbered.

Remember when Amazon threw 1984 down the Memory Hole?

    https://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technology/companies/18am…

Screw Amazon. Get real free books instead, from places like Gutenburg.

For the umpteenth time: yes, they are free at PG. I have used them before and my experience was terrible with the formatting etc.
Also, it is extra effort to go to another site and then try to get the books on to my device.
With Amazon its all in one place. In other words, for the same price (Free) I get a tad more convenience here.
By all means use PG (which I encourage as it is a fantastic project) and ignore Amazon but please also accept and acknowledge that there are a lot of people who like to have their stuff all in one place and like some convenience.

Some people like prison. You get 3 meals a day, free healthcare, and no worries. :-)
Amazon's coziness is the dystopia that Orwell warned us about. Break free!

Uh, don't get me started about Orwell. Rather than Amazon, I think the Five Eyes agreement first and foremost should be addressed. Plus, the laws affecting ISPs in Australia, free speech etc. Considered as a whole, the issue with Amazon books is relatively small.

      • You could beat these guys at the game by copy-pasting the PG PSA in the description :P

      • I don’t understand why it’s hard to get the Gutenberg books onto your Kindle.

Just download the Gutenberg Magic Catalog via the Kindle browser, then click on the links from there. Books are automatically loaded in Kindle format. It’s actually easier than getting them from Amazon.

      • @Lysander.

Aw c'mon Lys… you know you post these excellent deals just so that you can attract the Trolls

Without these deals, the Trolls can't possibly feel good about themselves… it's a peeing contest to see which one can boast that you can get them free at Project Gutenberg, but it's like this, these clownsnever read the PG editions either and understand that most titles haven't been formatted, edited etc as they are made available as is, and are made available on a take it or leave it basis.

      Copyright-expired books are always free

      No they're not.

  • EDIT: actually it’s every book I cannot get or buy. Anyone else have this problem??

Grrr I still can never get these. USA or au version. Just says not available for purchase or not available in your region. I’m logged in my au account. Just never can get kindle books. Grrrr

Do you have the kindle app on your mobile or your desktop? Once you have that you can get Kindle books.
      Without the app you cannot.

      • I have never touched the app and I have been adding books to my account for years.

      • Tried on and off - but @guvna has the fix!
        Thanks for your reply though!

Go to US Amazon and try to delete or change your digital purchase location to your Au account. I forget exactly how you do it. Google is your friend.
Had the same problem for the longest time.

@guvna - YES!!!!!!!! - it re-directed me around a bit - but yes, it had usa for address and once fixed to AU home base it now allows purchases!

        YOU ROCK!

        • Good to hear! :)

I use a ComiXology account and it works fine (dunno if I have my Paypal linked to it, but used 100% for free Dr Who / Sci Fi comics).

They instantly sent a link to my mobile number to click and confirm my sign-in so that may help if you add + confirm your mobile?

EDIT actually I just DL'ed the Comics App again and it only accepted my sign-in as an Amazon one so it's an Amazon account that I use for comics (and now DL'ing the Kindle App, 'cause no sign of new books in Comics library).

There's a Russian? app I use called Alreader which has fantastic options :- 3D page turning, change any gestures, reads lots of formats, page, percentage read & word count too.

      • Ive got a ComiXologuy one too…hmm…

But - @guvna has the fix! Thanks for your reply though!!!!

  • coming up as $1.89 for some, so not free AU

  • All the books but the first one seems to be no longer free.
