I heard there were some population issues, have you found that to be the case? I'm a big fan of Squad and have been thinking of picking up PS but not if the servers are going to be empty.
Try this reviewer. I think he's Australian.
Bottom line is that he does echo your concern about population of players, especially from Australia's perspective.
Seems like there's only 3 servers in Aus, and at 1 am, which granted isnt an optimal time, all the servers are completely empty.

Really enjoyable game, but make sure you watch some videos first before you purchase it, just so you know what you're getting yourself into gameplay wise. Slower gameplay with heavy focus on teamwork and communication. The game's not perfect, but manages to consistently be one of the most immersive gaming experiences ever for me.
