  • Why? Dealer is not obliged to give you 12 months rego for free.

So, what advice would you like today? If you don't like what you're getting for your money, go somewhere else.

    dont buy it then

New car dealer only offering 6 months rego

What state? I know WA dealers use to sell them with only 3 months rego!

if I want 12 mths rego I can pay the extra monies.

Then walk away and find another dealer.

Then negotiate another $500 off the price of the car and pay the remaining rego yourself… Or better yet, negotiate 12 months rego… How hard is it to say "No, I dont like that deal" and go somewhere else or make another offer? Just say to them "oh well, if you're happy to lose a sale over $300 in rego…" and leave…

  • And to rub salt into the deal they will put a number plate that has their company logo on it for advertising.

    • I dont think this is possible. Maybe the cover / holder has the company logo. The rego plate is issues by govt and will not have any dealer logo

      • +3

I’m not sure about other states, but you sure can get number plates in NSW that have the dealers logo/details printed onto the plate itself (not just a sticker)

Last dealer I bought a car off put these plates on my car when I had a “no advertising to be placed on car” clause in my contract. They ended up refunding me the cost of getting the plates swapped over at the RMS as they did not have any advertising free plates.

        • I seem to recall they wanted to charge my sister slightly extra for non-advertising plates.

@brad1-8tsi: This is why I buy cars now from dealers unregistered and get them to supply a blue slip/RWC. These arseholes always want more than what the rego is worth.

When I went to get my Outlander, they wanted $1,900 for just the rego (not including the stamp duty.) Went to the RMS and got rego, slim line plates AND paid the stamp duty for about $1, 500 all up.

      • In NSW they do, looks like it's been since 2012:

        • The customers love them

I doubt it. Customers either don't care or hate them.

    • Free advertising for them?

      • +1

Yes and that is why when buying a car from a dealer as per @pegaxs has said make sure you put in the contract “no advertising to be placed on car”.

        • Unless they are paying me to advertise for them, then no, they can stick their advertising up their (fropanity).

A free plastic number plate surround is not sufficient compensation for wearing their advertising on my car every time I go out and drive around.

          • +1

@pegaxs: And as it's on your car you are indirectly saying they are okay. The dealer I bought the car of put advertising on the top of the back windows (hatch), which I scrapped off and I want to paint out the number plate info for the dealer as every time I deal with them they stuff things up so I do NOT want to have any this on the car related to them.

I only found out about the contract info a few months ago, probably from one of your posts in another thread.

So you also rip out all the badges and decals from your car so you're not advertising the model and brand of the car you drive too and maybe add a fake brand and model so it looks good and not empty and bland/blank?

What about stickers you get from taking your car to the dealership for servicing? Do you rip them off too since they usually slap on a sticker to the back windscreen of the place your last serviced your car at?

            • @Zachary:

Correct. I hate badges on cars. And where they can be removed and no leave holes, they are removed. (InB4: do you change the shape of the car because brand/model/whatever?…)

What about stickers you get from taking your car to the dealership for servicing?

When I drop it in for a service, I make note to the service advisor/manager that under no circumstances are they to add their stickers to my property. I have had many a service manager come out and personally scrape the sticker off my window.

Could you also put in the contract that they have to pay you if they want their advertisement anywhere on the car? Or not realistic?

  • So ? If you don’t like it, go to another dealer, lol 😂

  • Say what you want included in the deal, then verify that it's all there before you accept delivery.

If you want car mats, full tank and 12-months rego (or anything else) then say that before you talk prices.

Six months rego is, say, $350, so will materially affect the price ..

If you want car mats, full tank and 12-months rego (or anything else) then say that before you talk prices.

That's all gonna increase the price….. all that would increase by a minimum of 1500$…unless you're a shrewd talker and can somehow get all of that for free or have them deduct the price of all of that from the current price so you do it yourself. I know I tried to bring the price down on a car that had a lot of dents(there were big ones as well as small ones), scratches, paint chips and even rust spots but the sale rep wouldn't budge and said it was "That's just normal for a car that's 15 years old, so with a bit of TLC you can restore it back to pristine condition."

It's a D-Max, they have waitlists for waitlists at the moment on some variants. They don't need to drop a cent realistically. Don't like it? Buy a BT-50 - same car mechanically, and you'll actually get a deal on one

  • vote with your feet and leave

  • I view Rego as just an Opex anyway. You are going to have to pay the cost of it yourself each year at some point anyway. In this case it’s just 6 months earlier.

  • Walk away….. you have the option to walk away.

Take their bluff - walk away.

6 months will have you running around looking to fix the car up for renewal paying a lot more.

    Walk away…. what a scammer.

Imagine if you needed something attended to, or serviced….. just walk away.
There is a million cars out there…. walk away

  • …so this is just a winge? great. thanks for posting
